I learned so much in 11minutes watching this progress on the page! I watch these vids in the evening but then spend hours absolutely itching to get creating, they are so inspirational. They definitely light up something within me. And as for the beard, I am a fan. 👍 but not if it looks like a Santa beard! Lol!
2 things that I like: the paint techniques and the art education of where you got the inspiration (context). This allow to to do some research about the artist and expand your knowledge of the art. I enjoy your video
I just recently found your tapes on line and I am trilled. I can't believe how much I have learned about using various materials. While I have been introduced to some of these before in the classes I've taken, your videos have revitalized me. And I love your beard, although a trim would not hurt! An Indiana fan.
I enjoy your videos so much! They are full of such good information, yet to the point. I am not an artist but I do have fun trying different techniques. It teaches me more about understanding and appreciating art. Your students are fortunate to have you!
Thank you for this demo. I learned a lot and feel quite inspired. I'm a portrait artist, and this gives me some great ideas to explore. I love creating out of the box portraits!!! this was great! Thank you,Tom.
Hi I'm new to your channel. I know you've said you use a photo copier. I've printed a black & white photo onto gloss photo paper via my printer. I've tried as you've demonstrated (ive bought the same gloss medium) but its green & most of it hasn't transferred at all. am I using the wrong paper or is my printer not suitable? I dont think can justify a photo copier! I really like your collage particularly as abstract is MUCH harder than you think! cheers Lynnette
That’s great Denise, to be honest it’s not my favourite either, I’m more a painter. I just like playing around with different materials. Cheers for watching 👍🏻
Hey Tom, the image transfer technique was definitely the highlight of this video, and as a student I am very keen on experimenting with new styles. 1 question tho, does it matter what type of paper you use to transfer the image? photo paper, normal printing paper...etc. anyways the video was very informative, thanks
@@kongogethi3624 ‘bump’ is a way of drawing attention to a great comment. But I’m guessing Mr Quigley has gone back to teaching in person and no longer has time to run this channel😢
Got a question. Do you do transfers of just your photos for copyright issues? And is the transfers printed with inkjet ink? Thanks in advance, just found your channel.
I'm learning so much from your channel! I've been doing mixed media for a while now... but I often get "stuck." This happens when my pages look flat, and cluttered... when I don't see the composition coming together. I'm trying to stay away from the commercial stencils and cut-outs, but when I get stuck I am tempted to "cheat" and scrap all of my hard work to simply be the backdrop for something more visually interesting. I want my piece to stand on its own, but all the layers can look messy. How can we be more deliberate and intentional, working toward something with composition & visual interest that does not get lost among the layers? Thank you, Professor Quigly! 😁
Use the cheapest copier paper you can find - usually 80gsm. No point using anything heavier as you're going to rub it all off anyway. Key thing to stress is that this _must_ either be a photocopy or a laser printed image - it will not work with an inkjet printed image as all the ink will run the minute you get it wet. This doesn't happen with photocopies or laser as they both use dry toner. I don't tend to use the wet transfer method any more, but I use a laser print onto a sheet of sticker/label paper instead, then heat transfer it. Less mess and quicker!
Thank you for the video, the beard is lovely. When/if it starts warming up over there you can always clip it into a goatee and still rock your facial hair.
Sorry, I dont like beards, moustache etc... Poils dans le dos, tout ça, beurk.... I prefer beardless, lol ! Thanks for this vidéo, kisses from France ! Ilove your créations ! Many ideas for me, thanks a lot, and sorry for my poor english...
Definitively have to try this transfer images technique. It idnt't work for me in the past, but I love them everytime, so... I'll keep trying. Thanks for the inspiration, as usual.
Vital to use either a *photocopy* or a *laser* printed image. The wet transfer method positively will _not_ work with inkjet prints - all your ink will run when it gets wet - you need a dry toner-based print.
Nice ,I'm a mixed media varied materials self taught artist.. I haven't done a college and been wanting to. You give great instructions and are very talented and videos are understandable. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial there! I'm shocked how well a photocopy-tape transfer works! Earlier I played with inkjet decoupage and it didn't work so I gave up that part...but now I dug out some old photocopies, cut out some parts and put it on a tape, even color copies...and they look like slide images, pretty impressiv! Now I only need to find a photocopy service...maybe in the library, lol. Point is, it must be a non-soluble toner on the papr copy, the inkjet image will just dissolve when it gets some water. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you. I think I have my answer here, I just asked if I could do an printed copy with inkjet.... Thanks for saving me the hassle. Would not work as a collage without transferring the image?
@@reginavaquero2783 It looks pretty different when you use a photo copier...now I've checked the difference in detail. The p copier uses pure carbon with plastic (non of them are water soluble) while the ink is. So you can use decoupage on photo prints (still used to be careful) but you kan totally wet down the paper, it will dissolve and leave the carbon print intact. The ink vill be very sensitive for water, I tried to only put water soluble varnish on inkjet prints, to make it look nice...and it was ruined. You could still use a non-watersoluble glue with a lot of care on an inkjet print, to glue in that...BUT it'll even fade with time (whatever color you print with ink, it'll badly fade if you place it in a frame.) The black & white photo copy image or decoupage will NOT fade since it's just carbon/coal powder in plastics...so, not much use for inkjet in this case, unfortunately. If you draw instead with good quality color pens (non water soluble) then you're better off.
Thank you for your explanation. I saw a you tube tutorial that apparently you can do an inkjet image transfer, but apparently you use the dry method, which is using a matte gel, apply generously on the surface you want to transfer on to, put the image on, then wait slightly (she waited 3 minutes) , just before it dries, then rub it off or peel it, and then she sealed it with an acrylic clear coat (I guess a varnish?) she also said that if you leave too long and if it is dried, you can spray with water slightly... Then proceed to peel it. I'm going to try and see how it goes!
OKAY, yeah, your beard! First thing I looked at! Like it-longer looks nice-as long as it is primed and neat. I somewhat simultaneously caught colors and shapes behind you- not quite sure how I did that. Looking forward to more of your work! Thank you. Terri from the South
Hello Tom I love your work, you r a great artist Thanks for your tips! Noticed you might have a Mic problem ,voice low and backgroud music loud.. hope you ll be able to fix it for evenmore enjoyable videos.👌🙏💫Bye Do a lefthandy in Paris🗼!
I´ve seen a couple of your videos and they are inspiring and liberating. Thank you. What I would like to ask is once the collage is "finished" do you cover it all with an acrylic medium or ModgePodge or wax or something? I find that in quite a few videos on collages there isn´t much information on how to "finish" it in terms of preserving and making sure the final sheen (or matte) is most appropriate for the piece. I would be most appreciative if you could direct me to information along these lines. Thank you again.
The beard is sexy... keep it!! Ggrrrrr... Love this, very cool. I've been wondering for the longest time how to get a translucent appearance with color over color and you explained it using flowtrol. THANK YOU!
I'm enjoying your collage videos and am glad I found you. Question though. Using photocopies: what sort of printer are you using? I think that is key maybe??
I love this video! I tried to read through all the comments but I'm not sure I totally understand how you did the photo copies. What kind of paper are they on that peels away so easy? Do you use a standard photo copier from home? Thanks for sharing your creativity!
Brilliant, love it! I do a lot of collage but never knew transfers could be that easy! I'd always heard/seen people using special expensive paper and all that. I definitely have to try this method.
