Hey guys, in today's video I'm going to be showing you how to create and use a custom skybox or sky sphere material for your projects inside of Unreal Engine 5. I'm going to be creating a space scene, but you can do whatever you like.

This Reflection Vector parameter is very interesting. With this we can make the Portal effect, right? You can also use it for 3D windows or distorsion stuff.

I had issues figuring out how to show the texture inside the sphere, as mine was only showing from outside. Then I enabled the Reverse Culling option on the sphere static mesh and it helped.

Hey, I'm late but this is because of the normals facing the wrong way. There's backface culling by default. In 3D, faces go one way. It's basically like when you look at a wall from the other side and it's transparent. So, if you import a sphere from blender or such, you need to flip the normals.

For those who are having issues using the image as a texture, MAKE SURE the image itself is in HDR format (NOT PNG) he says this in 1:23

Can u please make a tutorial on how to make just a star skybox? Like for example u just need stars in a skybox and u will have a night sky with stars?

It's exactly the same, you just need an image which is just stars. The default skybox texture does have editable star settings though if that's more convenient.

How do you achieve this if you are not using the default map and don't have SM_SkySphere in your level? Bringing in a sphere static mesh doesn't seem to work. At least I don't know what settings I need to make it happen.

You need to create new blueprint, add static mesh component to it and in details window select SkySphere. If you don't have if - make sure editor content checkbox is ticked in search options

How can you get the sky sphere to reflect in materials ( example a chrome sphere ) I can't get this to work?

Is there a way to set a min and max on the emissive colour? it starts dim and then it gets super bright like the star wars hyper space effect. i'd like to be able to control that

Just add a Multiply node and plug in the texture and a number. Make that number a Parameter, so u can change it from a material instance, then change it from your BP classes in any way you want. You can even make some effect in the material itself, like with some Sin() function which takes "time" as a parameter. Again, you'll need to setup some math for the time, in order to control the pulsation of the effect, as well as some addition, since by default, the Sin() fluctuates between -1 and 1.

Got the texturecube on the material. But it will not let me apply the material to the skylight. I can apply the texturecube directly to the skylight. Buy it doesn't show in-game when I do.

For some reason, the "Apply" button is grayed out in my material graph. Must be a setting turned off, or a plugin missing. But how do I figure it out?

This sky is not lighting the scene and is not working with a SkyLight. How do you give it a "isSky" tag so that it works with the SkyLight ?

I got to the VERY LAST step to change the skybox material and it won't allow it for some reason. Not getting any error or anything, it's just not applying when I select my material

Exactly the same for me. If I try the drag and drop method I even get the green dotted line telling me it should accept the new material, but then nothing changes - it stays with MaterialInstanceDynamic_0

My question is: if I have a perfectly tileable .png sky texture, that perfectly wraps onto a sphere as it is, why would I need to convert it to HDR and then feed the UVs node with additional info? I tried it like this, with just the texture itself and no world coordinates fed into the UV node and it looks perfect, with no seams or other artefacts. Can you please explain this little thing? Thanks so much!!!

@@SciFi-F no answer until now... and I still keep on using my non-HDR skybox with no issues in production, all looks perfect, as the texture I have is seamlessly tileable.

Hello, so far so good but i got to the point where you say something about copying skybox default and change mesh to the one we just created. Well I can't change the mesh of the sky box thats already there by default and I can't find actor named sm_skybox. Only Bp_skybox which I can't edit either. Someone below had the same question and the reply was to create a new blueprint and ad static mesh and I have no idea how to do that. Tried looking it up and found another very long tutorial.

Adding a static mesh inside a blueprint shouldn't be a long tutorial tbh In the top left there should be a window with all the components in the blueprint, so far it should be empty. In the top left corner there is a + button that lets you add components, just search for static mesh. When you select it, inside the details panel (usually the right window) you can choose which mesh to use and what material. About the things you can't find, I think you need to check a box that allows you to see engine content, not entirely sure where that is though. Hope this helps a bit

To do this, I selected the BP sky, there is a mesh inside, select and search for the mesh, drag to the level, delete the bp, then select the dragged and put the material, it should work

I had the same issue and I turned hardware acceleration on in my browser settings before downloading the sky from the generator site, hope this helps

Sry Matt, but this just isn't holding up to your other tutorials You essentially thought us how to drag n drop an image that's not gonna work as a skybox, because making sure is tiled is part of the problem why people are looking for tutorials

Whaaaaat why not just find an actual HDR 🤦‍♂ HDRs can store 1000's of times more information than PNG but just converting a PNG to HDR does not magically grant you that data. It will the exact same data, just in the HDR format. Like, a sun with an intensity of 1.0 instead of upwards of a 1,000,000.0 if you waned it. PNG converted to HDR will also still have all the hideous banding that you get from 8bpc formats ( jpg, png, etc. ), which are especially visible in space scenes. Free HDRs are all over the web, incl. up to 24,000 x 24,000 resolution
