How to Create Bright and Bold Artwork Using Watercolors and Mixed Media | Intuitive Painting Process

Play and experimentation help us become better artists or, at least that's what I think. In this video I pull out my brightest watercolors and I use them in a way that helps them all shine. In the end I've got a fun little painting to remind me what colors work really well when they are combined together.

Here’s a list of the materials I used for this painting: (***I now have the ability to monetize my site. This means I can include links to the products I use and when you make a purchase using these links, I will get a small commission. You won't pay extra for doing this and you will help me earn a little bit of money along the way, so I can continue doing this work. Please note that I will only ever add links to products that I actually like and use. Thanks in advance!***)

Thank you. I recently returned to art after taking sabbatical from a decades long career in healthcare. I’ve been exploring watercolors for the first time with pen and ink being my choice in early years. This new endeavor has provided me with pages and pages of random watercolor paintings, some of which I like and others not so much. During my working years, my creativity was playing with recipes in the kitchen, I could eat everything I produced, but not so much with painting. After a stack of paintings became unwieldy, I came to the idea of making bookmarks out of them. I write this quote on the back “That thing that makes you happy, do more of that”. I then hide the bookmarks in books at local book store and the library I also carry a handful of them and will gift one to anyone I see reading in public. It’s been an amazing time.

I just finished watching this video twice and it is NOT too long. I learned so much from this session about layering and color composition. The first time, I thought you were adding too much detail but I should have known better because, as always, you produce such amazing abstracts that are the sum of their details. You definitely know your craft and it is absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much for being a great mentor. 🙂

I. Love. This. You are inspiring me in so many ways, I just can’t tell you. I’ve learned brush techniques, sneaky watercolor hacks and tricks, color blending…all that stuff from other artists on YT but have struggled with deciding/discovering “my style”. There’s something about your concept of intuitive abstract that has really helped me finally get over that hill and stop stressing about “getting it right”. A million thank yous!

Yeah, these are the right words for it. Happy food for the soul... I´m at the beginning of my abstract journey and so glad I found your videos. It´s true, it is a process, the first layer is like a toddler painted it, but it begins to bloom with the next layers. And the detail part at the end is so relaxing. It takes much more time than a "normal" watercolor painting, but I enjoyed every second.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this video!! ☺️ My fountain pen is very easy to use and it's perfect for watercolor paper because it can't be damaged by the rough surface of the paper. @gabrielleannacormierart
@gabrielleannacormierart Месяц назад
Hi ☺️ I have never sealed my paintings with wax ( I have seen it done and I'm not sure how well it would work with the type of work I do. But, I might consider giving it a try some day.) Currently, I prefer to either mat my painting to then frame it under glass, but I also will sometimes use a UV protectant spray fixative and then just frame the artwork without glass (especially if it is a painting with raised textures). I hope this helps!

Hi ☺️ The plexiglass is actually from an old window we had in the foyer of our house. My husband cut it using a skill saw and it currently measures about 14 x 10 inches. This is definitely something you could get at a hardware store, but it would probably come in big sheets there. Amazon sells smaller ones here: amzn.to/3p2Oh9m. The brush pen is the one I was using to paint in between my "rocks". I'll be using both again in tomorrow's video 😉 With respect to the group chat, I'm not sure exactly... I may have contemplated the idea of doing a live painting session at that point and then changed my mind because it didn't seem to be the type of thing many would enjoy.
