General guidelines to consider when selling your hand planes online, especially on eBay, CIHI, Facebook Marketplace, or anywhere else you sell hand planes.
These are the things most savvy buyers consider when shopping for hand planes. As always, feedback is welcome - comment on what I missed!

Lots of great info to keep in mind for selling, or even buying old hand planes. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

Thanks for that great vid Michael. You’re right about the extra costs of missing parts which is why they need to be noted in the sale info. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for interesting video. I have given a lot of thought to the restore or leave as is problem. As I live in a rural area most of my buying is done online so am already paying the full price with little upward potential. I finally decided to fully restore to as near as possible to new condition. Part of my thinking was about vintage cars - they are always restored to a better than new condition. I enjoy the restoration process and if I get my money back with a small gain or loss it’s part of the fun!

Very informative! If anything, I'd add three things: * Seeing enough pictures to type a plane can help drive up the price. You don't have to put the type, just make sure there's enough shown for someone to figure it out. * Cleaning off dirt (leave paint and rust where they are) can help with confidence, too, because dirt often hides damage. Only use a cloth rag with Dawn dish soap or Simple Green to clean. Wire brushes/wheels, sandpaper, or razors are not "cleaning". * Wipe any cleaned metal surfaces with jajoba oil or 3-in-1 so the plane doesn't rust more on the way to the buyer. Oil is easily wiped off with a solvent on the receiving end, unlike wax that has to be scrubbed off.

"Seeing enough pictures to type a plane can help drive up the price. " I think this is a crucial point. As a buyer, I want to make my own decision about the type, not take the sellers' word for it. So the post has to have good photos, with good lighting. Pet peeve: sellers who don't bother to shine a light between the handle and frog.

Excellent. Should be required for all sellers and buyers. BTW, if it’s a good or better relatively rare item I LOVE getting in a bidding battle with those I think or know are collectors. I particularly like bidding it up in the last few minutes just so the seller gets more. Collectors, if you want it pay for it up front to drive people like me out. If you’re searching for collectible bargains you better buy in person. I do not buy much on line anymore except parts. Too many sellers do not know what they have or don’t have.

It’s a dog eat dog world out there! 😅 On more than one occasion I’ve insisted that the seller take more than they were asking when I knew the plane was worth more than their sticker price. It’s a good rule to live by.

Great video chock full of valuable tips and info. I would like to see the chart that shows the number of each plane made again. I thin Stanley made 4 and five but has it changed by types and then cumulative number. I think you could be compiling a great video as Walters is not going to self publish another.

A fine cogent vid MJ, most of this is common sense, but for the more neophytes among the viewers, a wealth of info. I have a bunch of planes to rehab now that I am semi-retired from wooden boat restoration and boats in general and will be selling some. There is certainly a decision to be made about how much to do to one for sale, and what demographic you think that you will target. You are absolutely right in to disclose as much as possible, for I have been displeased buying online a few times.I would also add to people as I do in the boat building/restoration groups I am in, don't bite off more than you can chew, and have fun. Remember that in this stuff there is a learning curve, be informed but hands-on is going to be the best teacher. Thanks for the vid MJ.
@justplanefun
@justplanefun 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! You’re 100% correct about biting off more than one can chew. So many of us just buy everything we see, often without cleaning up what we already have in the shop first. I know I was guilty of that early on. Thankfully I started selling so the unfinished projects don’t stay hanging over my head 😅

Thanks for the informative video, just in time for me as I'm thinking about selling some things for the first time. Maybe I'm over-thinking about it! But since you asked for feedback, I'd like to see an example set of photos of a plane for sale. I like your disassembly photo, but that would be just one of the photos in the set. What angles are best, what minimum number, lighting tips, etc. Anyway, thanks again for all the videos! The new microphone sounds good, btw.
@justplanefun
@justplanefun 2 года назад
Thanks for watching? You’ve pretty much nailed it - good lighting, lots of angles, basically leave nothing to the imagination. My rule of thumb is, I want the buyer to know exactly what they’re getting before any money changes hands. No surprises when they open the package!

Excellent video! When I have found my planes cheap, my main concern is the body, frog, and wood. If those are good I will find the rest (I am more of a user than a collector, but you know how THAT goes!). I intentionally have bought a couple for parts but have ended up restoring those to useability due to the main parts being good. As far as paint, I don't if Japaning is decent but a majority of mine barely had any left at all, and I don't mind the protection of paint. (Easier to remove than Japaning!) Thanks for the video!

I bought a bundle of tools that also had a lot of parts in it. When it was all said and done, I ended up having enough parts to complete 3 No 5s and a No 4. 🤷☺️

@@triune_blades Nice! I live in the proverbial "tool desert" and have trouble finding anything local so I hoard up anything affordable. The only planes I haven't bought is about 7 of various types sitting outside of a local antique store. They are rusted solid and the prices are $45 each! Not for me.
@triune_blades

@@upsidedowndog1256 I know how you feel. Barely anything becomes available by me and if it does, they think it's rusty gold - even pextos or chinesium grade planes. I score a deal maybe once a year or less. Good luck!

I won't buy anything that has washed out and blurry photos. When taking photos, never use a white tablecloth as a background. The white makes the subject (plane and parts) so dark that you can't see the details. It's better to place them on a wood bench top like you have in this video, or anything darker than that. That allows the camera to capture more light and details, making a better photo. Also make sure the photo is in focus. As a seller, if you have a bad photo, delete it and take another. It doesn't cost anything and only takes a second.

Agreed on all accounts. Good lighting is key!
