*So amazingly quiet and **Fastly.Cool** in my room! 42db is at a whisper level. I bought 2 and installed myself.Very sturdy bracket and easy to adjust to fit windows of different size. Absolutely fabulous units!!*

I just put my portable AC on a lawn chair in front of our partially open bedroom window and let it exhaust that way. I don't think it's exactly the best setup, but it'll do if you're waiting on the AC tech for your appointment. Got the AC at Goodwill by the way, and it didn't come with a window/exhaust kit. Thank You for your video.

You might want to put a mesh over that hole in the window, in order to keep pests out.

Nice video! The closer you can push that A/C unit towards the window, the better (but still leave about two feet of space for proper ventilation behind the unit.) That way you'll shorten the distance of the exhaust hose. You also want to get that "sag" out of the exhaust hose and make the hose as vertical as possible with as few bends as possible. These little things can make a big difference in how effectively the unit can cool the room, and can let the unit work a bit easier and more efficiently.

you are absolutely correct..the shorter the better

Linda Johnson I recently bought these things to insulate the Exhaust Hoses on my units, pretty great, now the exhaust hoses don't radiate heat back into the room! www.PlanetAides.com

godfatherNYC I know this is old, lol, but I would have purchased a "Cool aide", but saw a suggestion about using reflective, insulated, windshield covers that keep your car cooler. They cut into 3 lengthwise strips, and wrapped around the exhaust hose slightly diagonally, so it double wraps the hose, and the strips, by being wrapped diagonally, eventually cover the entire hose. Duct taped first strip down, then again when strip got to the end, taped to itself, then the same thing with next strip(reflective side facing hose exhaust). Works well! And I had the windshield reflector already stored, as well as the tape. Just a tip for anyone trying to save money..

Great instructional vid I did very much the same thing with the portable A/C I have the secret is to (as you say) make sure no hot air escapes from the outlet duct and no hot air gets back in from the window. These A/C seem to all have the same universal crappy plastic concertina hot air hose pipe - "Good old duct tape" multiple uses including repairing air conditioners!

Thanks for posting. I have a small side by side sliding window, too small for any window A/C unit, so I'm going to try something like this for the exhaust on a portable unit I just purchased. I think the panel kit that comes with it will be too wide for my 14" window. Mine won't be temporary though so I guess I need to line the outer side of the cardboard with plastic to protect it from rain. Wish me luck as this was a major purchase for me, portable units are not cheap!

Dude. Thank you so much for this. We have a Sharp portable AC unit and I looked at replacing the hose...to the tune of $80+. No thanks! I'm about to head out to the hardware store right now and put your plan into action.
@cashe18
@cashe18 9 лет назад
TheBigJB Thanks for watching... But this was a temp solution.. The Duct tape will loose stick from the heat after a bit. I did a mod where I slipped rounded cardboard in exhaust hole and that helped allot. Keep in mind
@TheBigJB
@TheBigJB 9 лет назад
***** Yeah, I discovered the same thing. Plus the drier hose radiated so much heat that the AC unit actually only kept the room a couple degrees cooler than the rest of the house. Lesson learned, though! Now I have to fork out for the replacement hose. Can you say price gouging? ;) Thanks for the idea anyway.
@johnmartin9278

***** The whole thing looks very temp to me. What happens when a rain storm hits? Better hope you are home or you might have substantial water damage to your room. Not to mention it gives easy access to burglar's.

@cashe18 9 лет назад
John Martin You are correct... Like I said in the video, It was my temp solution for under $10 bucks. I'm on the 3rd floor, so I'm safe. It worked well for the 3 weeks. But A more perm solution I recommend wood for windows, insilated hose pushed out pointing down and not use duct tape. Or buy the adapter.... Thank you for watching and your feedback

The hose that comes with many portable ac units are brittle, and some become even more brittle over a lil period of time snd therefore breaks. This is a good idea especially replacement hoses costs more than a hundred bucks! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I am in the exact same situation and I appreciate the video. I was thinking of going of Home Depot and buying a length of wood cut to the length of the window and then cutting a hole in it but now I'm not so sure as this look far far simpler.
@cashe18
@cashe18 8 лет назад
I would go with wood IF this is for long term. The setup i did was only for temp use on the cheap. the heat will make the duct tape come off after a while and cardboard on the window will warp quickly if you get allot of rain. But it's a quick fix on the cheap. Thanks for watching.

Like the warning you gave someone in the comments below. I used the 4" despite saying that I would use the 6" and it would run for only a few minutes before the compressor shut off. Not enough air flow.

Pretty good idea to use cardboard.. but that probably won't last forever. My new unit came with a window kit, but it leaked air back inside like crazy. I went to Lowes and got some foam weather strips for window AC units and ran it underneath my kit, and then put some adhesive weather strip on top. It makes a great seal. After that, I used aluminum tape to seal around the vent hole.

Brilliant! "The Almighty Duct Tape". The flimsy plastic slider that came with my Kenmore was a P.O.S., too narrow, and warped right away. I am going to create a combo of your and Jules' idea :) Better than trying to find plywood and someone to saw it...

At the Home Depot in Sunset Valley, Texas, in the back of the store they have a wood-cutting area. Today I found a free piece of 1/2" plywood there. The employee cut it for free to fit my window (23" x 14") so I could make my own vent. I took it home and cut a 5" diameter hole using my jigsaw.

I do this with my portable AC. I find that the "Gorilla" brand duct tape holds best and doesn't loose the adhesive around the hose as it heats up. Because it does get hot the longer the AC is in use.

Great video, thanks for posting. In my experience these single hose units dont work well because with all that hot air being expelled, the same volume of hot air is being sucked back inside from cracks around the house. Dual hose is the way to go, but for a quick fix, your video is pretty good!
@vwmetal66
@vwmetal66 9 лет назад
Peter Hansen It actually does look like a dual hose model. He just used the exhaust side it seems. If you pause the video at 3:58 you can see the cover for the other port for a second hose to connect.
@peterdrazdiakhansen4289
@peterdrazdiakhansen4289 9 лет назад
I did see that, looks like a dual hose machine, but the guy never used two hoses in the video. Without two hoses its like leaving your windows open while you run the machine. I decided to put the problem on its head and move the whole unit outside and have it blow the cold air inside. That way There is no vacuum issue, it doesnt use the cooled air to make more cold air and it doesnt matter that the machine itself gets hot or takes up space and makes noise. It was a bit of an effort to set up but it actually works amazingly well. Since it never rains here in CA during the summer and I live in a house not apartment, this made doing this hack a lot easier.
@cashe18
@cashe18 9 лет назад
Peter Hansen It was a temp fix but you are right about the dual hose works better. But this model is ONLY a 1 hose. the second hole is sealed. I'm thinking the company makes a dual hose model and uses the same shell. I wish it were a dual hose because it would cool quicker. But it did the job for the time. Thank you for watch.
@cashe18

John Gonzalez Seems like it but it's just a 1 hose model. that port was sealed and no hookup. It must be for a different model from the same company. Thank you for watching.

Thank you for Vid! Stay Cool.....and Don't forget to keep the ac too 😆
@cashe18
@cashe18 5 лет назад
That's a great idea. Though it was years ago, the heat in Miami is killer. My home central unit has been working great since repair so far. Aluminum tape sounds super. As the duct tape I used started to get loose within the 8 to 10 day mark from the exhaust heat. I also pulled the exhaust hose though the cardboard so it would hang over with end facing down to prevent rain water from getting in.

ONE way to fix the common plastic tabs breaking off issue - common to most OEM window vents....is to drill two small holes through end of window vent/hose END piece - (ROUND) END OF HOSE/DUCT THAT GOES TO WINDOW VENT- 12:00 and 6:00 position holes.....then feed hose/duct into and through window plank part so end is coming out the other side- probably only about 1" is all that goes through- (drill holes in this 1" area)....then run single copper hanger piece through one hole to the next hole. ( roughly 8" hanger piece cut out of hanger - bend ends once through holes.) This hanger piece is now keeping duct in place from coming out. Your duct is now reattached to window piece.

diy, exhaust you better tape up that window because I did similar to what you have and from the air pressure it pushed out window kit, plus it's less than 1/4in and closing a ,4 in window on such a flimsy piece of plastic, cardboard It won't stay &, because of how hot &,humid it is ever time the tubes get blown out or the window kit gets pushed in,I just add more duct tape reflective furnace tape & masking tape I'm not starting from scratch in this heat! The other morning I woke up and the cool air tube came out &I had so much tape on it I couldn't get it completely off the bottom duct so I just made an extension with bubble wrap & more tape. it maybe cuz mine has 2 hose's or that it's 14,500 BTUs anyway glad you're getting yours fixed because these units drain power & from all the leaks don't cool well the concept was good I just don't think they worked out the kinks! if I could have lifted a window unit I definitely would never spend this out rageous price

Great idea. The giant hose keeps coming off from the back. I’m looking for how to solve the problem. I might consider buying the pliable silver hose for the dryer. Thanks.

My setup is only for temp use. The duct tape does start to become loose from the heat every few days.

Question for anyone who has rigged this. Does the dryer hose radiate heat, if so, as much as the stock hose these things come with or less?

I don't normally comment but i did everything the video said. I could not finsmd my hose that my portable a.c came with so i try this out. Spent about $20 for everything and my power goes out in half of my apartment. It overheated even my wall where the wall socket is and i plug the a.c into the wall.

OOOoo NO..Thats isn't good at all. It even the plug is hot, that unit might have a bad compressor. I know it's been months but make sure it has NO water still locked in the lower tank. and exhaust hose is as straight as possible

my exhaust is too short . can i connect 2 together ? and with what ? i was thinking duck tape but will that work for long term ? can i use something else to connect both hose?

This Setup is NOT for long term use. The Duct Tape will fail from the heat. I recommend to use a longer larger insulated tube so the outside does not get that hot. then the duct tape will work better. but for long term use, order the original plastic tubes the unit is designed to use. it would be your best bet.

Like the window part u made could slide in place of the back of the ac a small square slide in with the hose thats what my unit looks like idk what to do we just have it running

As long as the exhaust is working then you will be fine. Thank you for watching

How long can you leave the tape around the hole of the air conditioner without it becoming a fire hazard? Is it a fire hazard?

Is it a 6 or 4 inch hose?

I did this and once the hose had hot air blowing through it the duct tape came off and wasn’t sticking due to it getting too hot so not sure what I’m doing wrong

Hi! How long did this last for? I am about to buy a portable ac but it doesn’t come w the window kit. It has the exhaust tube tho. Is there a stronger more durable option instead of cardboard? I like the diy idea bc my window is REALLY big and most window panels are smaller for the “average window”. I also live in FL and u know that rain be lol. I’m worried about the cardboard. Thank you. This is a great video.

the only problem, is that vent ..should be as short as possible, takes more energy to push that exhaust out than a shorter hose....just saying, I did the same thing buying a 4 in dryer hose and box,,,was reading about the length of the hose should be short, though

Linda Johnson It was a temp solution. But your ideas are GREAT! Thanks for watching.

Is Duct Tape toxic when heated by the hot exhaust air? (Duct Tape burns at 200 degrees, so I think it's safe. Right?)

I had no issues and the exhaust is way below 200. Only issue is after a bit from the heat, the stickiness wares out
