I live in the UK and I'm no expert with DIY and even though I've had professionals do the main jobs , i wanted to look around and be proud of doing things myself and also to save money . This video has given me the confidence to try and i think most of it is in the preparation and measuring . Thank you for giving me that push.

GREAT video! Thanks so much for this. Been trying to work out best way of making my edge on sleepers sturdy so they won't lean out with the infill lawn behind them. You method of adding rebars into the timber and concreting them in is perfect. I'll put rebar hooks in underneath but also into the lower back face to give extra rigidity. Great instructional. Thanks again.
@reigns_206
@reigns_206 7 лет назад
hudsville you could dig down and have grave rebar so basically have the hooks coming up and meeting the other hooks in the middle of the Crete to create a much sturdier hold, what will make it stay more secure is placing angles on the sleepers. When your talking about the groundwork side try compact both sides of the sleepers then that way you have the same about of strength for less movement.

You can make a bender by bolting two bolts side by side with enough gap to fit the steel rod through and a third at where you want the bend to be. You can even put a stopper screw to stop rod sliding through now place rod in and slide a steel tube over rod and use that to bend rod. You can cut rod using a steel cutting saw blade on a drop saw or use a grinder. I recommend setting this up on a 45degree, so basically upwards 45degree between x & y towards sky. This will allow you to use your weight and gravity. Hope this helps

"And even simpler way.." a huge bending tool no one has. I'm not sure hooking the rods is necessary in cement (try pulling a straight rod out of dry cement!) along with the weight of a sleeper. But perhaps could just do two 45deg holes each end pointing inward. =\======/= Once cement tries will be physically impossible to separate from cement. (Less holes, less rods, less cement) No need for a very simple huge bending tool no one has.

@markrichardson5796
@markrichardson5796 3 года назад
OR.... if you want to do it cheaply..... Lay out your sleepers. Wack a treated wooden peg in next to the sleeper at 600mm centers on the inside. Make sure it ends up half way down the depth of the sleeper so when you put dirt in the top of the peg is covered. Wedge a spade under the sleeper and use it as a lever to lift the sleeper up to the height you want, and then put a large exterior grade screw in through the face of the peg and into the sleeper. Will lock it off nice and strong for ever and can be done in fraction of the time as concreting it in.

The only fancy tool he used was the rebar bending tool. You could easily substitute a hammer to bang on it or just buy pre-made hooks if necessary. The only main tools necessary are: circular saw, drill, wide chisel. Use straight edges clamped to the wood to guide your circular saw and your guaranteed a straight cut. Look up how to cut half lap joints. That's what those are called.
@jameslewthwaite7964
@jameslewthwaite7964 7 лет назад
Great video thanks. A 400mm reinforcing bar won't fit into a 50mm+50mm+250mm hole. The 'kick' won't be embedded in concrete as shown - all those graphics and no one picked that up?
@reigns_206
@reigns_206 7 лет назад
James Lewthwaite actually it would as when you have the bend it's tucks into the concrete to make a hooked compacted pocket so the rebar wouldn't be able to move unless under intense pressure.
