Plug those massive holes in the top with dowels for a rustic look. It will look as though you used dowel joinery but this is a great video, very professional.

PDF says the standard dims of a sleeper is 400x200. They’re not. They’re 200x100 so it ends up quite a bit short. Would suggest a different leg design else it’s a bit low.

I would attach the legs from underneath. Those bolt holes will collect a lot of water.

Constantly... I actually clicked on this video to see how the bolts would be protected, as the thumbnail image got me curious... seems like no protection at all huh?

The wood used is Macrocarpa. Used in many parts of the world as railway sleepers and very popular in Australia and NZ for gardens and backyard walkways dividers. Naturally resistant to rot, so you'd be good for many decades in that regard. Alternatively you can get yourself a tenon plug drill bit and make wood plugs to cover the holes. It works both ways and I've done it many times.

How long is the bench please, I’m building one and not sure what length to cut the sleepers Thanks
@mitre10nz
@mitre10nz 4 года назад
Hi Brendan, cut two for the seats 1700mm long, two for the legs 400mm long and four for the feet 160mm long. The feet you will also need to cut to 50mm thick and 100mm wide - you'll find further instructions over on our website www.mitre10.co.nz/guides-and-advice/guide/how-to-build-a-bench-seat^Matt

Hi Mr Mitre , can you tell me wat wood species are you using? n also is the wood being use outside why there is no preservative applied?
@phillq
@phillq 8 лет назад
+Larché Jacques Clarel Macrocarpa is the type of wood (as they say in the video). Macrocarpa has a natural oil inside it which acts as a natural preservative.
@larchejacquesclarel9451
@larchejacquesclarel9451 8 лет назад
+Phillip Quinlan its local wood ? it replaces teak and is cheaper? pretty good looking wood :)
@phillq
@phillq 8 лет назад
+Larché Jacques Clarel The video is made in New Zealand, I know you can buy it there - very common. I know the tree is native to the USA so I assume you can buy it there too. It costs NZD$35 for 100mm x 200mm x 2400mm. Not sure where else in the world you can buy it. Might need to google it if you want to buy some in your country.

Phillip Quinlan Except the level of natural preservative is very low. Macrocarpa does rot very quickly outside.

Macrocarpa is a very easy wood to work with tools but it is absolute nonsense to suggest it won't rot outside. Used as decking has about a 5-7 year life, used as garden edging (which it gets marketed & sold as here in NZ as sleepers) it starts to show rot in a few years. Against wet soil it'll be totally failed in 10 years.
