In todays video we will be using oil and acrylic paints to create rust streaks and patches to our plate girder bridge.
Oil paints are a great to use, and can be manipulated into shape for quite a while. We build up the effect with multiple layers

Great helpful video! When I try this method and streak the paint I can't seem to get it to work right and doesn't look realistic. Also I struggle to get the streaks straight. What am I doing wrong? Is oil or acrylic paint best?

Acrylics will dry too quickly in most cases so i'd highly recommend using oils. To get the streaks to runs straight down, you'll need to get in a position where you can swiftly drag the oil from top to bottom in one pass. Too many attempts and the effect can be lost. Good luck

@@BuntersYardOk will try using the oil based paints rather than the acrylic for this but I did try it on the oil paint and didn't work too well. I saw you layered up the paint once you went over with a wet brush. Maybe I should try that? Also how do you get the streaks so straight?

Would you also use your rust technique (with the thiner) on spraypainted surfaces (fully dried)? Or would that make a mess? I'd like to paint my bridge green first. Thank you for the video!

Oil paint thinners wouldn’t have an effect on acrylic or enamel paints so safe to use on painted surfaces….. except green!! ( nah just kidding!) Best to let the paints dry fully and you’re good to go 👍🏼

Could you also apply a really really thin line of oil along the top of each panel, apply a line of thinner on top of it and then use the airbrush with no paint in it at an angle to make it flow down? I might test that idea - I find the brush strokes tend to take a slight curve because of the nature of the hand movement being slightly circular

That’s an interesting idea 🤔 I’ll have to give it a go However, when dragging with the brush I find it’s easier if your hand is ‘floating’ in mid air ( so without a pivot point). Hope that makes sense?
