How to Create Shadows in Photoshop

Shadows help put the subject in a photoshopped composite. In this tutorial, I show you how to create a shadow and then manipulate it so it looks totally real.
Shadows can look detailed and difficult, but they are actually easy to create.
Usually shadows are sharp and dark near the subject and blurry and light the further away it gets. Using a few Photoshop filters and some masks, all this becomes really easy.
We learn to use the field blur, gradient tool and opacity to create realistic shadows in Photoshop.

This is one of the best tutorials on RU-vid. Honestly, it made me purchase the workflow course and I don’t regret it concerning the content. The one thing I really don’t like: you may not download the course and you need to be online, that’s a severe bummer.

I don't get some of the comments below because how can this be critiqued in any way possible except from the artists point of view but there's no accounting for taste. Anyway. Learned quite a lot. This is terrific video but even though I've been doing heaps of PS learning over the last couple of years, it took me several hours to go through and back up to try and catch all the detail. Your videos are helping me very much, and i want to ask question at the making shadow part, when i drag the selected object (mine using trick-or-treaters) after free transform, i ended up shrinking them not dragging the selection making them into the shadows, can you tell me what i must've forgot to do? I have selected the kids using quick selection tool, clipped mask it, and fill black, then put the layer under the selected kids layer

Just asking, is there any particular reason you are using the cc version? I tried to follow but got stuck somehow. This is the second video i have tried to follow. I am using a cs6.

You're very talented, but I found the tutorial to be hard to follow. It struck me as being more a demonstration of what you can do, rather than a "How to" video. Maybe you should stress that this is not for beginners in the description.

Good tutorial. The highlight didn't work for me using the quick mask. Everytime I come out of the Quick mask, the selction "ants" are on the circle AND the entire picture, so could not transofrm like yours.

I had the same problem. What should fix this is double clicking on the quick mask icon and choose "Selected Areas" and then click OK. Hope this helps!

I have purchased many of your videos and noticed that you don't use Blend If very often. When I used the practice files I found it to work get for this example. Is there a reason you don't use it much?

I like the tutorial, but a road looks like not for cars, but for bikes (children are very big). And the shadow should be turned more to a right side for this sun position.

I agree...these two small kids are 'filling up' a two lane road. Picture of kids is taken from above them. So their horizon isn't matching up with the landscape's horizon. But I do love the techniques demonstrated in the video.

I know I'm kinda late to the party, but your website has changed and there is no free lessons tab. Look at the kids' vanishing point, then look at the horizon. That's why it doesn't work, shadows or no shadows.

The children and road width doesn’t match. Assume the road is twenty five feet wide and the height of the child is five feet. Suppose the elder child lies down on the road, she will cover half the road. So the width the road looks like ten feet. So you should have shrunk the children’s image and shadow.
