Thanks for the tutorial; was quick and easy to follow. Suggestion - filling in the x-axis with white color would prevent the lines going down from crossing over the month labels. Makes it look like the line is going behind.

Thanks for this tutorial. Even though I tried and tried, I wasn't able to make it work in Excel for Mac. Functions are different but I was able to do straight away on a PC.
Hi there. First of all: thank you for a short, yet very helpful and easy to learn tutorial. One question I still like to ask: How can I implemet dates from the era b.c. ("negative dates")? I really like to make a history timeline that covers more that a couple of months or years. I couldn't find any helpful information yet. Thanks for your consideration.
Thank you for the great video. I have a question: how to make the time line by year, not month? I created a column with year, in numbers of course, but it didn't turn out correctly. The years just didn't show up in the horizontal axis.
I had the same problem using excel 365. Instead of months Jan, Feb etc I wanted 1950, 1951, 1952 etc. I changed different field formats to general, number or even tried a text format?. Still no solution. I also made sure “Event height” field was a number field. If I used the data in the example the chart worked as it should. Excellent video and printable instructions which were very well written. I just need to overcome some quirk in excel. One question is how to use the chart format, ie copy to other excel sheets and use different sets of data over other year ranges.?

Where has this been my whole life! Not your fault, but these instructions don't work exactly with the Mac version. However, I was able to get it to mostly work and it was good enough. THEN, trying to print a chart using Word for Mac was another whole problem.
Thanks for commenting. If the Format Data Labels task pane disappeared after you unchecked the Value option, please open the Format Data Labels task pane again, but this time check the Value From Cells option first and select your data labels and only then uncheck the Value option.
thank you .. this was very useful - wonder if there is a way to introduce shading or some feature to show the current time and distinguish between completed and expected??
one work around to my question below was to change the format of the time/date column cells to text rather than date or time. This will work ok even though the intervals won't be correct but at a big picture scale I can deal with it. if there's a better way please let me know!
