Here's a quick video where I show you how I create my drum samples. That is something I do every time I record acoustic drums.

Hi Chris, I’m not sure if you’ve had the issue of the ‘repeating the process’ of exporting each sample when you’ve got 16+ variations of the samples for velocities and round robins etc. A trick I found for speeding this up is to create a cycle marker for the length of the first hit (assuming your hits are at an even interval) - say 2 beat. Give it a description, (snr_top etc) then select the cycle marker and repeat it via the typical repeat command (ctrl+k for me I think) the cycle marker will automatically increase in ID’s so no need to do anything else. Choose export, mix down, select your tracks (if doing batch) and highlight all the cycle markers on the bottom L of the window, select top to bottom and then click in one of the squares and they’ll all be ticked. Define custom name pattern with a counter so they’re unique/to your taste and there you go! Just thought I’d share.

Useful video CHris, as always. I've had Trigger 2 for a couple years, I thought it only used .tci files, but I saw you use wav files within Trigger.

I recorded samples of my drumskit because I wanted my signature sound and wanted to use them just like midi (placing everything perfectely on time)...the sound I achieved is great if I listen to each part of my kit separately but It doesn't work when I listen all together, especially with the other tracks of the songs (Guitar, bass, keyboard, voice)...why? It's just a matter of equalization? Pre-amp? Cymbals sound good, snare and tom/floor tom not so much, they have no punch and clarity... Sorry for my english and my no knowledge. Thank you.

I've learned a lot from watching this video, but the question still remains. How do producers make electronic claps and hi hats like the drum machine sounding ones? Are they sampling them from somewhere or recording them with mics?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 4 года назад
Both, sometimes by recording claps and tother times by sampling claps from old drum machines

Lol just download Serum, pick a Sine Wave, put wave on sub lvl(C0 oct), add fast punchy envolope 1 to control volume, ENV 2 set for pitch modulation for sine wave(need to be fast too), add noise what you like, adjust volumes in OSC 1 and Noise generator... GG, you got snare like from drum machine, btw you can play with reverb, dist and dont forget for EQ and compressor)))

I recorded a snare sample for an 80's sound (big, fat, compressed and reverberated). I'd like to use it by finger-drumming on a midi controller pad (let's say Akai mpk). Is it actually feasible? Can I assign this snare sound to one of those drums pads on the Akai?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 3 года назад
Yes you can do this. Import your snare sample on a Pad in Groove Agent SE in Cubase, and you're good to go!

Hi Chris! do you ever get songs where you cant find a good drum take of a particular section and need to then add your samples and build a part eg like a fill....?if so,would you need to use the samples with room tracks aswell? Thanks

Hey, Chris! Hope all is well. I have a question partly stemming from this video. Let's say that hypothetically, a person likes the sound of bleed and working with it, but is working only with samples or a really good-sounding drum machine. I've heard of a technique in which we can play the drums out of speakers, re-record that and some of the room, and blend that back into the mix to get a more live sound. Have you tried this? What would your tips be, if in fact you recommend it? I'm just wondering, cuz I was thinking about experimenting with it later, but haven't really heard anyone else talk about it (and also haven't looked for it--LOL). Thanks!
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 5 лет назад
I've seen that technique before and heard good results, but never tried it. My recommendation is very simple, don't limit yourself, experiment, do whatever needs to be done to get your mix to sound better :-)

Hi Chris, do you use the same sample for ghost notes or drum rolls? If not, how do you do this (I'm not sure if you already have a separate video for this question)?

Hi Chris! I got distracted thinking about how you got the shape of the fade out to change from a linear one to a curve when using the handle @2:58 I only saw a straight line as an option...I now know that you can save presets!! what have I been missing out on?!!!
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 5 лет назад
When you have a Fade applied on an Audio Event, just double-clic on the top corner of your event, that will bring up the Fade Settings window. You will be able to select different curves, save presets, etc... and at the bottom of that Fade Settings windown you can clic on "As Default" to save your curve as the default preset.

Hi, I run a recordingstudio in Stockholm/Sweden.. I am really struggling with my snare sound and do not get that nice sound you used in your video.. I do allt he things right but get a dead thud from my top mic, tried all the usual ones and Condenser like AKG 414 or Shure SM81 but it sounds like crap.. How do you manage to get that open,natural sound? Thanks for a GOOD channel. I am using Nuendo so I get many tips from you. Thanks! Micke S.
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 5 лет назад
Hello Mikael, I think if you want to get a good snare sound, the snare itself plays a huge role. Then the performance, mic selection and mic placement. I forgot which mic I used on this one probably my SM57 or maybe an Audix VX5, not sure.

Hi Chris I am having difficulties, I made a song a BPM is 84 and I have groove agent so I wanted to double my tempo to 168 and I want my drums to be slow as I am using 84, does groove agent has a button to do that quick or must I do it manually?
@mixdownonline
@mixdownonline 5 лет назад
You need to use a Logical Editor Preset on your MIDI Event...In Cubase10, right-clic on your MIDI event, select Logical Preset...Standard Set1... Select Half Tempo, that will do it... :-)

Man every time you tell me to share and like the video before showing any content I cringe and think "well no... Why don't you show me why I should instead of just saying DO THIS at face value" lol gotta show us some of the good content AND THEN say and don't forget to like and share etc because then we're oh yeah this was a good video otherwise by the time the middle/end rolls around I forget to do anything. Just trying to help. Unless the person is a dedicated subscriber, a new viewer won't just like and share without seeing the video first and by then it's too late because you already said it

Thanks for your comment. I understand your point but strategically speaking it is important to do the call to action at the beginning of a video since the majority of people don't last till the end of any RU-vid video. That actually works well for my videos. In the future, I will add "if you like this video..." maybe that will smooth up the line a bit :-)

@@mixdownonline I see you are trying to improve your gig here. I have to point out that the video started around 1.5 minutes in... I've been browsing your videos versus browsing information on a "competitor" of yours to come to a reasonable conclusion on what will be the best way for me to learn. Meaning, I have been considering buying your ultimate guide and a different overall tutorial focused on Cubase 10 - it was a toss up between you and this other guy. You probably have more professional experience, but I had to weigh in everything. In the end, I'm going to start with what will likely keep me focused while learning so I won't have any incentive to take a break or quit. The other guy seems to be more direct and to the point in general while pointing out extra tidbits only every so often. I recognize your guide might be different than your RU-vid video style and you seem like a cool, laid back guy with a lot of valuable knowledge and experiences to share. To sum it up the other guy, based on his other work experience, seems to be more accustomed to teaching. I might end up picking up your guide at some point anyways, but I'm telling you all this because I would want this feedback if our roles were reversed.

@@scouter2392 Thanks for taking the time to write your comment. I appreciate your honesty. I don,t agree with you that the video started at 1.5 minutes in... My style of teaching might not be a good fit for you and that's ok. I like to put my students in context when teaching :-)
