How to crochet a chunky star stitch baby hat

This tutorial will show you how to crochet a cute, chunky star stitch baby hat / beanie. This hat is suitable for beginners.
For size 0 - 3 months use a 5mm crochet hook
For size 3 - 6 months use a 5.5mm crochet hook
For size 6 - 12 months use a 6mm crochet hook
For my baby hat I used a 5mm crochet hook and Drops Big Merino yarn (worsted weight).

chel w There is a video on the Bella Coco channel for an octopus toy (part one is only available but part two will be out in about a week). Sarah-Jayne does mention that it may not be suitable for premie babies but maybe just don't use safety eyes - she explains all this in the video. Hope that helps!

After my first row of the star stitch the way it appears it wouldn't even fit a preamie 🤷‍♀️ I'm using cotton cakes size 5 hook. I'll keep going. Lol I do love how you do your tutorials!! Ok when I slip stitch after the first row of star stiches there is a hole big enough for my finger! Ugh This just isn't working for me. Beautiful stitch. Thanks for teaching it to me. ☮️🕉️

I'm give up! I'm not a beginner crocheter, but I spent over 5 hours trying to get this right. I have worked with a couple of different start stitches before, but my hat is not coming out even close. I have never had so much trouble with a pattern.

I also had the same question. When I looked in the description box I saw that she mentioned a "worsted weight yarn" in this pattern, yet the title says "chunky" yarn. The yarn looks to be a 4 weight. If you choose a 3 weight or DK, you need to make allowances for the smaller stitch so your beanie will be to size. Measure the crown before you begin the star stitch row (use a measurement hat chart).

MissNayNay A bigger hook and yarn with added stitches, i mean if it's for a child it's a smaller hook and yarn. I don't suppose you have to be a rocket scientist to know that lol

I'm using a bigger yarn and a larger hook and no stitches needed changed. I'm a beginner as well. Beginners don't know everything and you needn't be sassy.
