You can learn how to Crochet a Felted Handbag using the Fulling Process in this DIY video tutorial. Hi I'm Donna Wolfe from Naztazia. You will learn how to first crochet the bag, and then learn how to literally shrink it using hot water. Additionally, agitation from a washing machine to make it fuzzy soft, dense, sturdy and very strong. I'm using Kristin Omdahl's Be So Brave 100% merino wool yarn.

Yes! Absolutely. Fill a basin in the sink with bath-like hot water (the kind that doesn't burn your skin but is still kind of hot). I do like the Eucalan wash product, but you can use even a mild dish soap. Place the purse directly in there (no bag needed). And agitate it with your hands. Squeeze it, rough it up, rub the piece together, swish it around hard, etc. It takes a bit longer to do, but it will produce a felted bag in the end.

Hello! Only animal fiber shrinks when washed in hot water. 100% wool is what I recommend. It's kind of like you never throw an adult's wool sweater into the washer and dryer otherwise it will shrink into a child's size. In this case however, crocheting with 100% wool and purposely shrinking it creates a nice effect :)

can you use acrylic yarn or does it have to be 100% wool?

Hello! Acrylic will not shrink. Only animal fiber shrinks when exposed to heat and agitation, which is why I recommend 100% wool. Kind of like when I accidentally tossed my wool skirt in the dryer - it shrunk so much I could barely fit my arm through it!
