I am a German having lived in Ireland for nearly 20 years, 81 years old and still crocheting and knitting exactly the way I was shown by my mother and at school. Works best for me. Sometimes, however, I do use other methods when there’s a special reason. I like to watch other people knitting and crocheting and sometimes it’s just a tiny but important step I can add to my own methods. Speed is not important for me although I’m usually pretty fast. I love all your videos, thanks a million for sharing your experience!

I played tip 6 repeatedly so that I could see it in detail. I can only work for shorter periods of time because my wrist will hurt even when I use a support glove. I have found that holding the hook from underneath rather than from above also helps with my pain. I tend to twist my hook and didn't realize it was a big deal. Correcting that might also help with my pain. I am self taught from a booklet and then I improved after youtube came out and people started teaching on here. Thanks for sharing this information, I'll look to see what else you have posted.

I bought a box of used random hooks o mecari so I could try different kinds. Was well worth it and I learned a lot about the differences. Donated what I didn't need to assisted living/nursing home.

These are good things to keep in mind. Thank you Tuula. Having seen this I think the slowest thing for me is keeping the yarn around my fingers to regulate the tension. My tension has improved over time but sometimes if I am feeling stressed I tense up and grab the yarn and my crochet is then tighter. Also sometimes with a new yarn I am having to get used to it before I can speed up with my crochet. You are right, just keep up with the crochet.

Excellent points! The title could be "How to crochet painlessly and faster". I recently noticed that I was doing the twisting motion. This video showed me how to fix that. You also turned my attention to an effortless way of holding the yarn. This must be a very useful video for many! By the way, I too recommend the Clover hooks. They are a perfect hybrid between in-line and tapered hooks, I think. Before, I believed I could only crochet with in-line hooks, but the Clover took no getting used to and made crocheting much smoother.

I tend to use the aluminum tapered hook when crocheting (mostly the Boye brand). Also, I'm a left-handed person so I tend to hold my hook differently than your #1 and #2 ways, and I also use the index of my right hand to control the tension of my yarn. I've been crocheting for about 45 years (since I was 11 or 12) and that is just the most natural way for me to crochet. Thank you for the tips - very much appreciated.

I agree that the Clover Amour hooks are great. They’re comfortable and smooth. I do the pencil hold and not all hooks are comfortable with this hold, such as the Prym hooks. They’re so lovely and well made but not made for the pencil hold. Great tips on this video 💚🌻

That blue yarn your were using looked lovely. Silky and smooth and a beautiful color. I think to crochet faster you must practice. I am 70 and have croched for many many many years. I started at 6 years old. I will not crochet for years then pick it up again and it is only a few hours before I am off and running again. My grandmother (she was from Mississsippi) and I am from Texas. She started teaching me when I was 6 when we saw each other for vacation using acrilic yarn. She taught me to look at something and be able to figure out the pattern, she didn't know how to read a crochet pattern. At around 8 My mother taught me to read directions by using the fine doiley cotton thread to make a pineapple doiley with all the loop de loops around it and you set something like a lamp in the center of it.

That's great, you have a long crochet background! Crochet has changed over the years. I also learned to crochet by looking at pictures of crocheted items. For that reason, it is hard for me to understand now that even any who crochet a lot don't see from an image how something is crocheted 😊

Great tips! Buying a set of Clover Amour hooks was a game changer for me, as they glide through the yarn allowing me to crochet more quickly, but also more smoothly. For some reason my 4mm Tulip Etimo Rose hook is my fave though.... I think it's the handle on it that's the perfect size & shape in my hand & feels like I'm home whenever I use it. 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

Thank you for this. Personally, I'm in no hurry, but there are still good tips here. I have poorly hands & my hook holding hand seems to be fine, but the one holding the tension & my project starts hurting as I go. I'm new to crochet & not sure how else to hold everything without causing pain. I try to pay attention to how seasoned crocheters hold theirs, so I hope to figure something out cause I am so in love with crocheting!

Hope you find what works best for you! In the over 50 years that I have been crocheting my positions have changed a bit. I also tend to have pains in my hands and elbow at times, so it is important not to strain them any more than what is necessary.

Great that you are starting to crochet again! 😊 I have two versions of my favourite stitch for a triangle shalw, maybe you like one of the. They are worked from corner to corner. I don't have tutorials for a rectangular shawl because any stitch can be used for that and I have many stitch tutorials. I agree with you with regards to the economy of movement. Many times I see people who are moving their upper arm, shoulder, or at the elbow while stitching. The larger your movements, the slower you will be. You should be able to stitch with just your hands, or hands and wrists. Compare how beginner student uses a pencil to an adult. The adult is only using tiny movements of their fingers and can write for a long time without getting tired. The child is using their whole arm and holding that pencil with a death grip, and they are tired after a few minutes.

Very good tips. I have been crocheting for 50+ years, and have seen the evolution of the crochet hook...who knew? I learned to crochet from my Grandmother on #10 crochet cotton...and learned filet crochet. She had a set of bone crochet hooks, that I wish I had now. Your tips about the yarn & hook relationship is so true...I think beginners become frustrated because the yarn doesn't "behave". Also, when getting into the craft of crochet, I think it would help beginners to have a simple project/goal. There are many charities that look for scarfs, hats, etc. Sometimes working on something not too complicated, like a scarf, for someone else can give you a sense of accomplishment...the complicated patterns for friends and family will seem a bit easier to accomplish then. Thank you for your great video and tips...I subscribed so I can keep up with you.🤗

Wow, of your five crochet tips number five was for me absolutely not one to miss. I know i am not replying on that particular one but the reason for that is because I couldn't stop clicking from one to the next. I have been crocheting or knitting for over fifty years and learnt so much from Utube but have never subscribed, just saved. I cant belive how I never thought of your 5th Tip myself as by the way you explaind it is soooo simple. I cant wait until I next need to use Chunky or Super Chunky as over the years I have used 2/3 or 4 balls at the same time and believe me it was so time consuming, untangling every so often. Or sat and rewound all the balls in to one, two or three before I started. All I can say now is ThankYou, Thank You, Thank you 😊

I find the in line hook requires the extra step you mentioned and aggravates my wrist. Also, it’s easier to take my time. I also split the yarn using the inline hook but I really like the more pointed end of the inline. I use that hook for inserting in tight stitches. Every tool has its pros and cons.

Due to my muscle disease, tension is the worst for me. Some days I can't feel I'm holding the yarn, that is the sign I shouldn't crochet. Some days I feel I put toooo much tension.. that is also a sign to not crochet that day. (of course, cramps and pain in my hands are a 'not today' too). But to make sure I am 'somewhat' even on my tension, I hold my yarn a bit different than most. The yarn goes over my pinky finger, under my ring finger and over my middle and index finger. Most of the time I slightly raise my middle finger automatically to pick up my yarn with the hook. Sometimes my hands don't co-operate as well and I raise my index finger slightly instead. When I have a stitch that is too tight or too loose or done incorrectly, I undo that stitch and raise my index finger so the yarn has the same tension as before and lower it while working the stitch. This works for me... If I didn't do this, I probably wouldn't be able to crochet at all. Not really the best method, for anyone who might have a similar problem with their hands due to a disease, illness or even injury, it might help.

It was so fun to watch your videos. I learned to crochet from my grandma before I learned how to write my name! Good ole German crocheting. When I was 8 years old, I learned how to knit on a pair of wooden knitting needles, from my Great Grandmother, who came to America from Germany as an indentured servant. Not until I was nearly 40, did I realize that I was not knitting the usually accepted American way, but the ole German way! I made an extra effort to teach my daughters how to knit that way! I have always used the Susan Bates...in line crochet hooks. My daughter insists on using the Boye hooks. Happy Hooking!

I watch lots of crochet videos and the one thing that drives me nuts is when the person has the working yarn wrapped around their finger several times and they have to keep pausing to rewrap, they usually need to unwind the finger at some point. It makes for a lot of unnecessary movement.

My pet peeve is trying to watch someone throw the yarn as though they were knitting English style. Then I wonder if maybe they learned to knit before they crocheted? Did whoever teach them learn to knit first, crochet second, throw their yarn as a result and just teach others they method? Regardless, drives me nuts

I love❤your tips. I also like clover hook however I think I like dots better. A whole set is $25 us dollars. I have several clover amour but now I pick up dots. Seems to be easier on my hands and very smooth to use. However because Wecrochet is the only place you can get them they are sold out most of the time. But worth the wait. Now back to you lol. @@jennasorscia9044 Yes, I only showed examples of the yarns because all brands have tightly twisted yarns. One of the favourites that I use all the time is Gjestal 100% SW Merinoull, one of the ones I show on the video. I use many other Norwegian yarns too. Also a number of Drops yarns. But I can't say I would have favourite brand or yarn, I use just so many different ones. The main thing for me is that the yarn is natural fibres, I hardly ever buy or use acrylic.

From this video, I can with confidence say we crochet exactly alike! No hook twisting, no tensioning around fingers, an economic movement and I also lift the yarn slightly sometimes with the left hand middle finger. It is interesting to see someone crochet so very similarly to oneself! Thank you for the speed tips. I am glad to say that my crochet speed has increased from doing it a lot, your first tip. That is the main thing! Doing it a lot, but with economical and relaxed movements.

That's interesting, it isn't often you see someone crocheting just the same! In Finland most people crochet in a fairly similar way, like I have never seen anyone hold their index finger in the air but there are varieties here too.

@@TuulaMaaria no it was definitely a first! I think this relaxed and small posture of the fingers is most ergonomic. It reminds me of the way norwegian knitters Arne and Carlos advice people to hold the yarn for knitting too - no floating fingers or odd tensions or it will have long term effects!

Glad to meet you! In Finland girls used to learn to knit, crochet and sew at school. Now it is both boys and girls that learn it from the first grade to about 13 years old. And girls need to do woodwork and metalwork that only boys used to do.

I have arthritis in my fingers so I can’t use my first finger on my left hand to lift the wool I have to use my second finger, it works for me. It’s amazing how with practice you can find what works for you.

My favorite crochet hook so far is the Tulip Étimo. I’ve been learning amigurumi and like to do the YU only, which is hard on the hands. My hook has been lovely and has kept my hand from hurting. They’re about $12 each which I think is a pretty good price. I’ll definitely be adding more a little at a time. 😊

I guess I've been crocheting for too many years to learn something new here. Speed is my deal even though I am already pretty fast. In line Susan Bates are always my favorite. I inherited an old wooden in line hook that I also love, it came from somebody's gramma somewhere. I only use two fingers to hold my tension and they never really move, so I haven't given up on learning because I loved your presentation so much, I know I'll keep following you, just for that reason alone. A really excellent video!

Good to hear! In Finland lots of people crochet fairly similar because we are taught that at school, although not exactly like my way, I have changed some. But holding the crochet close to your hands and the same hold of the hook.

I do help my yarn with my other hand! 🤫 Its just the way I learned & I don't know any other way. My mom has tried to hold the yarn the way I do but it doesn't work for her. I still haven't figured out how to advance the yarn with my left hand. My work is very neat though!

Yes, it is sort of braided, very pleasant to work with. That particular one isn't available anymore. I got it from Knitcrate, an American monthly yarn subscription box but it stopped trading last year. I have seen other ones similar to that but i can't remember what the term is for that kind of yarn so don't know what to search for!

Nice to see that someone else doesn’t wrap their yarn around their fingers, “fiddling” with it as you said in #5…I hold my yarn exactly like you. I learned from a book about 35 years ago…none of the illustrations showed or mentioned wrapping it around the fingers or having to hold that index finger out awkwardly…it just seems so strange and unnecessary when I have attempted it. And TBH, it actually kind of triggers me for some reason…😂 I like the aluminum straight hooks as well…

My favorite hook is Furls Resin Streamline. They are by no means inexpensive hooks, but are by far ergonomic and much easier to use.

I could imagine that if I used that shape of a hook with crocheting with a light pen hold with my work and yarn all very close together the thick part of those hooks would feel uncomfortable. So I'm not too worried about not getting one, I find Clover Amour hooks perfect.

Forget learning or using Tunisian crochet if you are a pencil grip person. And Tunisian mosaic is a great way to get patterns with no ends to worry with. Pencil grip also causes more hand issues, according to my PT doc and surgeon

Wonder what would be th problem with penxil grip and Tunisian... I do a lot of Tunisian crochet and there are tutorials for it too on my channel. At schools in Finland craft teachers used to absolutely forbid the use of the "wrong" way to crochet, the knife grip, everyone had to use the pencil grip. That's how it is still taught to all children but nowadays if someones tries different grips, they are allowwed.

@@TuulaMaaria It would not be a problem with short rows, like entrelac, but doing a long blanket using a hook with a cord, means having the full length of the piece on that hook and cord,, making it very difficult to hold and use a pencil grip. I have been trying to teach a friend Tunisian techniques, and she only uses pencil grip. She has given up, except for pieces that are no longer than her hook, 6" or less, because she cannot hold the hook with those fully on it. She sticks to smaller, center-out round pieces. I think Tunisian has changed over the past years, from doing winter beanie-type hats and scarves, small potholders, and blankets made with small squares, like entrelac, to the much larger pieces, including Tunisian mosaic blankets that are large enough for a king size bed, without piecing. I wonder if you have tried doing it with pencil grip and how it would affect the tension of the stitches, some of which are quite fancy and textured?
