Best thing for harvesting them is an old (or new) CD. Won't cost you anything, mos people have a few that they don't need or want any more.

Nice video! My grindal worms thrived on coco coir but did horribly on the scouring pads. Just sharing my experience.

I agreed mines didn't work so well on the pad either so I went back to the good old ways.

Couldn't even get mine to culture on Coconut Coir. Green Scouring Pads did work but took me a long time to get culture going. Potting soil is the best but you attract mites even if you clog the holes with the white aquarium filter cotton. And you have to keep soil moist everyday. Lots of work unless you enjoy it.
@michelledunn6712
@michelledunn6712 2 года назад
@@robertfong-mow7235 You need to pour boiling water into the potting soil to kill all the germs and the insects eggs. Leave it for a while then drain. Do this before using it for the culture.

Same here. 2 cultures in coco peat are thriving. I started one with scouring pad. They don't seem to accept it. These wigglers are picky esters too. They didn't accept cheap regular biscuit, they go crazy for moistened cat pellets only.

For me scouring pads didn't work. What did work: Coir compost/Good dogfood (Iams)/keep them warm/rotate the plastic once a day/Put a little Duckweed in (really)./Don't exhaust the supply (find the right amount of cultures for your demand)

Thanks- I like this idea much more than using dirt. Only problem is the culture I bought is in dirt and I don't know how to get them transferred over to a setup like the one in this video. Any ideas??

Instead of picking up the plastic and rinsing it in the aquarium to feed the fish, take a little water (dechlorinated) and rinse the worms on to the pad in your new container or simpler yet, just take the plastic and put it in the container on the scouring pad. The worms will move off the plastic and into the scouring pad.

Ohhhhhh “scorch pads”. You mean Scour (sk-ow-er) pads. I rewinded it back 3x convinced there was something special about those pads to get that name scorch 😹
@plecoman2003
@plecoman2003 Год назад
or Scotch pads.... a scouring pad brand name from a company called Scotchbright. I just use el cheapo pads from the $2 shop and soak them in old tank water for a week to get some kind of bacterial film happening in the pad before introducing the worms.

Invariably, all my worm cultures eventually get mites. I used to fight them but always lost. Now, I don't fret over having them and just try to control their number. I use dog kibble for feeding my cultures. The mites are attracted to it and will get on. With big tweezers, I pick up the kibble and any mites on it and swirl it in water. Most of the mites come off. I do feed the worms I harvest as well as the mites in the water to my fish. The small fish go crazy for the mites and the worms.
