I adopted a betta from petsmart for free (they even had me sign adoption papers for him) and he had fin rot so bad, 95% of his caudal fin was gone :'( I used a combo of Betta Revive, Betta Fix, aquarium salt, and of course clean water. I saw new fin growth after 2 days! Now exactly 6 months and 3 days later, his tail is full again and he's thriving! He still has clear ends on his tail that haven't changed color yet and they may never change color, but he's still beautiful!
@@sarahbates5934 If you have Instagram, my fish account is @The_Lovely_Fish_Tank !! The bettas I've rescued are Scarlet (the bright red one I talked about in my comment) and Tsunami (a halfmoon koi)! If you scroll back far enough, you can see what they looked like before they completely healed.
It's sad how many Betta fish are sold to people who don't know anything about keeping a fish happy and healthy, and who instead of taking care of the fish with a passion and a care for the fish's health, put it in solitary confinement until it dies of a disease that the owner didn't even bother to look up because to the owner, the fish wasn't alive, it was just a form of entertainment for them. But it makes me happy to know that there are people like you that will go out of their way to make sure their fish stays alive and happy. So, yeah.
@Sophia Witman Can you please tell me the medication procedure? Did you apply the medications together or one after the other? My betta too has tail rot and I am looking for an appropriate remedy that does not stress him out.
Ugh I am a beginner & I am so glad that I found this video! My new Betta fish, her fins have reached Stage 3, mind you she was just brought into my care & I definitely noticed her fins. I am an absolute amphibian & animal lover. I wanna save this little Betta so thank you for the recommendations!
This video is made to help beginners ..she said to clean the tank but she forgot to mention not to "over clean" ..most beginners have absolutely no clue about benificial bacteria ..that info has to be drilled into people's heads because it goes in one ear and out the other 90% of the time
~ I am proud to say that after nearly 3 weeks of treating my betta in a 5 gallon hospital tank (I took his main 10 gallon and sterilized it very well while he was in his hospital tank), he is healed of his fin rot and most of his fins were saved - he's doing great. I used a combination of Indian Almond Leaves and Maracyn / Maracyn 2. ~ I always kept check of my water quality and kept my tank clean and in check while he was being treated. I also give him a variety of healthy food. ~ Cause of Fin Rot: I had pothos stems rotting in my tank, which I was not aware of and it was fouling my water. Make sure your plants are healthy, guys. ~ This was my first real fight with fin rot and my betta is doing wonderful. I saved my fish. I'm so proud of myself. 😊
You literally helped me save my fish. He was on his way out. So bad.. after 2 days in the aquarium salt bath. He's improved so much!!! I'm glad I found this channel because I went to get betta fix.. then read it could kill him. Just like with the salt bath. People said that they should only be in and out the bath for 5 mins. Thank you for saving Valentino.
Irene when you were still called A Gamer’s Wife I wasn’t so sure about you. No offense meant. You are truly an outstanding addition to Aquarium Coop. You’re more knowledgeable than I had realized before. You are also so affable. What a pleasure it is to watch your videos and read the blogs. Big thumbs up to you. 👍🏾👍🏾
Long time watcher but I rarely comment. I just wanted to say how much I loved this video. It was filmed brilliantly and the content is great. Plus your presenter was amazing. Great work guys!
I recently got myself a beautiful blue half moon betta for my community tank. He’s my first betta, so this is a great video to be aware of this before I ever encounter it. Thanks Irene.
my poor fish had to deal with moving before i could clean his tank so he was so stressed but now that i got him in a happier place he seems to be doing a lot better. he is pretty old but his energy went back up so much.
Thank you for posting!! I started taking over caring for my landlady’s betta. The poor thing was in a terrible state due to poor water conditions and I had to take over. The fish is alone and the i seemed to fix her “popeye” issue, that was horrific, but thankfully, she recovered. Now I’ve bought a 1.5 G tank with filter, w heater, but fin rot has seemed to creep in. Im committed to caring for this sweetie, so thank you very much for your instruction. Sorry this is so long!!!!❤️😉
Perfect timing! This is exactly the info I needed. One of my old tetras seems to not be able to bounce back from torn fins and little scrapes nowadays and had developed a bit of fungus again. I treated her with salt and elevated water temperature last time because I didn't have the quarantine trio yet. Going to follow your instructions this time.
Thanks for the great content. I just purchased the recommended trio for my sickly betta. You’re basically my local fish store due to your excellent online presence. Keep it up - it drove me to purchase from you.
I followed your advice on the aquarium salt (I'm in Canada so no antibiotics available) and my little guy is looking so much better! It took about a week before we noticed anything and then his fins started to regrow quickly! Thank you!
@@laviniandradeg I have a betta with fin rot too. Ive got a bowl of 1 liter distilled water room temp and dosed that with about 1/3 teaspoon of aquarium salt. I pull the fish from the tank with a net and put it in the salt water for about an hour a day, then put it back in the original cleaned (no soap) tank. This seems to have stopped the rot from spreading, but the fish is still lethargic and doesn't eat. Breathing heavy. I do water changes of original tank, 50% daily. I SAVE the salt water bowl for the next day. PetValu store recommended API Melafix in the original tank once a day for 7 days. So far so good?
My fish got fin rot. I dont overfeeding him, I clean the tank regularly and all the levels are where they're supposed to be. I really am trying to keep him alive, but all the meds im using arent working
Hey bro I know how you feel Yano I’m in the same boat but hey it’s not always your fault I purchased fish from the pet store and took a picture of them on the first day I realize a 3 weeks later and felt it was my fault then looking at those photos I purchased them like that so the store is to blame in the end
I regrettably bought a Betta from PetSmart, it looked great but I noticed after putting it in my tank that it definitely has been rot. Honestly I’m not sure if I regret buying into it more or if I would feel worse knowing that it was stuck inside that little cup with the same kind of life. In any regard I’ve started treatment, she still has holes in her fins but she is very active so I’m hopeful that we can get her on the right path soon.
I rescued one from Pet smart too, he was completely white, after a while he got his blue black. So Yeap it’s possible it’s been 10 months for you I hope he is doing great
Thank you, thank, thank you, this witch craft did the trick for my daughter’s betta fin rot. Really tho thanx I felt like I tried everything and this worked just as described. Great work.
This medicine combo cured my bettas fin rot and after 4 days I started seeing regrowth with color amazing! I also have a planted tank with inverts and everyone was fine. The fish seemed mildly stressed but nothing out of the ordinary for medicating fish even people for that matter when we are sick. After 7 days fin growth is looking great so much more coloration in his fins now. Unfortunately one of my Cory’s jumped out of the tank due to lack of food I’m guessing because he was healthy before treatment. I’ve heard Cory has said that you can feed them maybe day 3 then day 5 so you don’t stress them to much while keeping waste down to a minimum still I did this and they were perfectly fine after haven’t lost another cory.
Same here! I kinda messed up at first and now the poor little guy got sick... I am taking care of him as well as I can. Is yours ok? I do hope he got better. ^^
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you guys. I had a betta surrendered to me with fin rot so severe they had begun to melt together. He is a half moon but his fins looked like sticks and he could not swim. I had tried everything. Salt, different api meds, salt baths. You name it. I tried your combo with the ich x and I put some tannin leaves in to boot. When I tell you in just two days how much his fins opened. It was a straight miracle. He can swim again. You are miracle workers. Thank you so so much.
My 2 year old boy tore his fin from root to tip. Added a catappa leaf and did small water changes daily for the first week, then every 3-4 days for the next two weeks. He healed nicely, and had a white stripe through his tail for a few months
Methylthioninium chloride, commonly called methylene blue, is a salt used as a dye and as a medication. It is very effective too. You can use the recommended dosages in a quarantine tank as well.
Placed an order for the listed medications and received the order 3 days ahead of schedule. I couldnt be happier and cant wait to help my little guy. Bettafix just didnt cut it
@@madisonelwell I bought it from Aquarium Co-Op’s website. If by some chance you’re in las vegas, I’ll give you some. Good luck with your fish partner!
My betta has such a bad habit of biting off his tail. I've tried adding toys, plants, betta bed, almond leaf and what not! I've added kuhli loaches today, if he's bored that should provide entertainment. Oh! And he makes bubble nests daily to pair with the self abuse -_-
Question! If the fish is sick already with fin rot I’m concerned that not feeding for 7 days will reduce their chances of survival. Is it better to just feed the fish one pellet at a time so that there is no excess waste? Thank you
Mine stopped eating. He looks dead majority of the day. I'm washing his tank down it was fungus growing on his toy and he decided to lay in it. But my water chemical level was perfect. So stressed out because he's dying. I bought melafix now I'm hearing it can kill them!
Your 2 yr old video is still helping peeps. I am a beginner/intermediate lvl fishkeeper, however your dosing suggestion was helpful and did the trick, Thank You!
Pretty new to fish and absolutely loving your videos. I'm currently treating a common goldfish for fin rot and decided to go with your recommendation of treating with maracyn and ich x. I'm following your advice regarding dosing but can't help but feel a little uncertain about the markedly decreased amount of maracyn. How did you come up with your approach of treating with 1/5th the recommended dosing on the box? And at what point do I make the decision to treat for a second week? Thanks to you and anyone else who has any thoughts on the matter.
My plants from you guys are expected to arrive today, I’m so excited! I started putting together my planted tank to try and give my betta a better environment, as he’s been struggling from fin rot off and on since March. What non-reflective background would you recommend? I believe this is the cause of his fin rot.
Ive used the window privacy film u can get it on amazon and get an opaque white. Black makes the reflection worse. Irene uses posterboard and tapes it on the back thats a great solution as well. Painting the tank has a few issues with it and cant be easily removed.
You got me really thinking about my Betas setup. I discovered that my driftwood has a ragged area that was the culprit. Took that out and his fins are recovering 😁
Oh haha, I just took a clear plastic tub from Walmart and used a permanent marker to mark off the gallons on the side. I also drilled holes on the top for air flow and for cords to come out. I'll try to make a video about how to make one in the future!
My betta are already in stage 2 of rot, fin right now sadly I can't afford any kinds of medication right now :( gonna keep the water clean and I hope my betta will get better
So the thing is that I tested my water conditions several times and it all turned out fine. As well as distractions, I provided my betta with loads of plants and a leaf to rest on and a sort of like log to pass through. I've moved him to a different tank and I have been treating him with salt but it doesn't get any better.. He's also alone in the tank so there were no bullies for him. He sometimes used to attack the fellow cleaners the snails, but now that he's not with them anymore.. idkkk. Do you have any more tips, because I don't want to lose him!
I bought a betta last week to introduce to my community tank.he was scared of any fish that passed him by or came near him so he hid day and night under a coconut shell and wouldn’t eat.i bought a separate tank with filter heater sand soil plants lol he seems to like it and i hope his fins will regrow.
Thanks for the clear video! I have a new betta and it seems like antibiotics and antifungals worked against his fin rot for 5 days but by day 7, it came back and got worse. I'm worried about going the full seven days without a water change even with medicating. He's in a five gallon with a snail. if anyone has advice or insights, please let me know. I really don't want to lose this little guy! I've only had him 3 weeks. And he's such a sweet little fish. I should add, the water parameters are really good. I even had them double tested by the local fish store. What freaks me out is up by day seven of the medications, the water was smelling kind of mildewy and gross. luckily today was day seven and I did a water change and now it smells crisp and fresh again.
my first betta lived for 3+ years, but in his last month i noticed all of these thing in him, his fins turned clear at the ends (where it was white), the edges were torn up on all his fins, and he sat at the bottom of of tank instead of putting in the effort to sleep in his leaf bed. i lose him while he was asleep, he didnt float, he just stayed at the bottom of the tank where he usually slept
My betta fish has lost its fin and it's become small from the tair caused by fin rot ,I have changed the water and used a solution for fIn rot ,i have changed the water and I fed it. It was not eating at first ,but I got the energy to eat them ,thank you for the tips ,
OMG IF ONLY I FOUND THIS VIDEO SOONER!!! I had a lovely comet goldfish that got what I think is fin rot and one day I came downstairs to see him dead. It ruined my easter and I feel so bad for not doing enough research.
thank you for making this video im a beginner betta fish owner and i noticed fin rot on my fish and saw so much videos why its bad for my betta fish. Imma buy aquarium salt to cure my fish
If the fish was removed to a quarantine tank for treatment, is it nessisary to treat the tank they were originally in if they were a single fish in a tank of only snails and plants?
Hey So I've been using aquarium salt on my betta since 2/4. He has fin rot since 1/15. I do the separate container for 30 minutes. Yesterday, I went to Pet Smart for them to check the water quality. They told me to change 25% of the water because my alkalinity was low. I have a 5 gal tank. So I changed the water. I should've let the tank cycle for at least 30 mins before adding my betta. I usually put my fish in a bag & float him for 30 mins before adding him in the tank. Yesterday, I had to be somewhere in an hour. So I added my betta directly in the tank. He immediately went into Vertical Death Hang. I thought I killed him! The alkalinity was showing bright orange 8.4. I uses Tetra 5 in 1 Easy Strips. I bought Tetra Easy Balance & Tetra Correct ph. I used half of a tablet of Correct ph & 1 tsp of Easy balance. My betta is back to acting normal. He ate food last night. I woke up this morning & the water is all cloudy. 😢 What do I do now?
Great overview, question I have a Betta, that was doing a lot of tail biting, to the point that he took off large piece of his tail. I dose with API Stress coat, and it's seems to start the tail growth again, I do notice a lot of clear tail growing in place. On the average, what is the time frame that the tail will regrow itself weeks or months? Irene I always enjoyed your videos from before... Bot I know that you are a great addition to the Aquarium Coop team.
This video is very well explained and tells me everything I need to know. Thank you! What's sad is that I just treated my fish from velvet and here we are again, searching for how to treat fin rot :( Is fin rot treatable with constant epsom salt baths?
If you are going to use aquarium salt for a betta, and he is in a tank alone, can it be added to that tank, or does it need to be in a quarantine tank? Also, does the filter need to be removed for salt, or just for the medicine trio? I don't want to to stress our poor guy out more than necessary, but definitely want to do what is best for him. He looks so much like the blue guy in your video, black in the front of his body and then lovely blue everywhere else.
I kept 4 Cory catfish and when i brang them in my 10 gallon tank i saw one floating so i took it and saw fin rot so this video helped save lots of time
Hey guys, if any of you have gravel. Don't feel bad I live in Taiwan and it's not easy to get aquarium soil at all. I have seven tanks and they all have gravel. We have no silk so I use live plants
I just ordered Maracyn and Ich-X. 😔 I THOUGHT my Betta's fin rot was improving but I went on a Weekend trip, made sure the water was clean before I left, but when I came back his tail fin was worse! I can't figure out what's causing it as he's only in a tank with 6 Corys and 2 Snails and I do watee changes as often as needed. I think I've noticed Stage 1 of Fin Rot with my other Betta as well, but again, I can't figure out yhe source. The PH got real low because of Mopani Wood so I've removed that and the PH levels are back to normal so hopefully that helps! Also hoping this medication will help! I have to treat him in his tank because I don't have an extra heater/filter yet so wish ne luck!
My halfmoon betta was in quarantine in the past 2 weeks in a salt bath and his fins had started to improve and stopped 'rotting' but now it suddenly starts to rot again. He's not losing fins but they're starting to look ragged again.
Is it severe (ie the point it’s reached his body)? My betta has it pretty severe, he still has his fins and tail gif they are extremely degraded. I’m not sure if this is correct but I’m going to do a large water change and rinse the ornaments in hot water. It’s a step in the right direction until I can get test strips and meds
She used to post under the name 'A Gamer's Wife' but now joined the Aquarium CO-OP team. She has produced numerous good educational videos; if you have a problem with pest snails have a look at her video where she conducted a long term test using copper, bleach and alum powder. It's like watching a science experiment, awesome.
2 of my Angels have missing fins. And 2 other fish have few white dots. I’ve been medicating with ich x and melafix and salt and heat. And I don’t see recovery nor do i see them Getting worse??! So what do I do now
Sponge bobs house in one of the tanks, take it out immediately, I was a skeptic people I really was, I didn’t believe all the stories about sponge Bob ornaments, so I bought them for my step daughter, not only does the colour come of and change the colour of your water but the ornaments actually degrade, like I said I was a skeptic before I had no choice but to learn from my mistake, my betta does have fin rot and by the way I’m not just pointing fingers lol treating it hope all goes well, happy new year to
