He's going Mad, look at his body posture, his head movements, and his speech pace. And this topic is only for a crazy person who the f... would do this. Next video organize spare bike parts.
Very good video and a solid result. 😉👍 A better finish would be achieved by wet sand with 800 grit after primer before paint then wet sand after with 800 again. Then lacquer and final flatting with a final lacquer coat. But with all that paint you'd need to mask the lens seating area to ensure the lens goes back in again. 😉 also they will weigh a lot more. So weight weenies beware.
Join us next week on GCN, as Ollie makes Christmas decorations out of two coat hangers, tinsel and glitter. Followed the week after by Tracy Island made out of... tune in to find out ;-)
You can dye your plastic sunglasses with some liquid dye for clothing (like Rit Dye) ! It works perfectly, it's extremely durable and wear resistant. There is a lot of youtube videos on how to dye plastic parts.
I love how Ollie is so desperate to explain the chemical interaction between primer, paint and plastic but knows he must keep the video GCNesque. Nice work on the paint. Will try it on my next fOakleys.
Im totally doing this to my Sutros. I should have got them in white but I went with boring black and regret it since my Radar EV are black also. This will cancel out my purchase mistake for small money compared to a new set! Thanks Ollie!
I use a primer called etch primer for plastic car parts . Acrylic for home use but 2pack is best. Automotive paint supplies sell etch primer in cans,if you can get the flexiprime even better because its formulated for movement.
You could use Plastidip to customise your frame, especially when you want a mat finish. It's durable but easily removable by peeling it off. I've wrapped some red vinyl film around the white frame to add some color.
This is the sort of fettling that I'm doing during lockdown too.. Sanded and polished the headbadge on my steel bike the other day. I think I could happily fettle for ever if I had to. My gears, brakes and headsets have never been smoother and more finely adjusted. On the spreadsheet of component weights for my weenie bike I've now got separate entries for the tyres with and without air in them (pressurised air at 90psi adds about 2 x 5g).
Ollie aren’t you gonna sand down the white paint gently before going another last white coat as the final layer? That’ll make the result far more consistent and smoother. Also, no clear coat at the end?? Thanks for the video anyway!
I got Optiek Van Gorp to customise some jawbreakers for me in black with Bianchi Celeste paint splats - Optiek Van Gorp is the customiser of glasses to the pro peloton. Worth checking out their Instagram page 😎 Every cyclist needs some bling shades though!
I used Tamiya plastic model spray can to paint my glasses, they have copious selection of colour. I did mine with colourshift and flake ones, so cool. They also have many kinds of varnish, you can have gloss, semi gloss or matt. Also you can actually order custom waterslide decals to be applied before the clear coat. Customisation is and endless pit my dear friend.
Ollie you are killing it with your projects in lockdown!! you are my favorite part of GCN in lockdown. I can definitely see your old PhD/scientist/tinkerer self coming to the surface
Distinct lack of Hydro Dipping... Saving that for the TT bike right? ...RIGHT!!!??? *HYDRO DIP!* [CLAP] *HYDRO DIP!* [CLAP] *HYDRO DIP!* [CLAP] time-ten-to-the-power-of-googolplex :D
Ah, finally a modification option for a cycling related product that I've been using for over 15 years now (actually the product longest in use right now... Bike changed several times, as well as helmet, clothing, shoes, chains, cassette, bar tape, you name it...)
Yo Oli, sorry got a complete different question for you, you mentioned a couple of shows ago which brand your ‚bike hanger‘ behind you is, need to get one for a new bike and I really like it, would be so nice to hat an answer...;-) Cheers from Germany 💪🏼
Question - I have recently bought a set of easton carbon EC-70 aero bars and they have internal cable routing holes BUT - they are either side of the bar and on the new R7000 shifters the cables both exit the shifter on the same side and do not line up with the holes. Any tips for getting the cables through a single internal routing hole? OR how to get the cable to the other side of the bars neatly?
How resistant is the new paint? If you touch it with a fingernail, would it scratch and the black below come out? Or if they fall, would the paint chop easily and reveal the black?
If you do enough coats with a good amount of primer below then they should be fairly scratch resistant, but it mostly comes down to the level of care taken when spraying the glasses, lots of light, even coats!
Hi I’m thinking of getting a pair of Cycling glasses but I have to wear prescription lenses. Does cycling glasses come with a pair of add on for prescription lenses? What are my options other than contact lenses?
Good effort but a bit more time spent with prepping glasses and if you spray in short smooth bursts rather than continuous spray. May have been the camera angles but finish wasn't great. Also Plastic specific Primer would of been better. Coat of lacquer to protect from water and sweat. You FORGOT Lacquer. LOL Need to mask off the lens or put a fake (cardboard made lens) to avoid a poor lens fit after painting. And finally sand between coats. WE all have high hopes for the TT bike Paint job mate :) still great video and thanks
Now, I’ve never had a pair of Oakley Radars myself, but didn’t Ollie just break the nosepiece off when trying to remove the lens? That bridge and centre bit is one piece with the top of the frame, isn’t it?
I can't believe you didn't mention how easy it is to get new lenses for glasses. You can usually find replacement lenses online for most glasses and get different colors or go polarized etc.
I think you struck it on the head there. If anything, PhD calls for fOakleys by definition. A man who has survived such lengthy studentship knows the ways of the cheap.
interesting, but there is no way i'm going to do anything to my prescription sunglasses. Something like $600 to replace and it's not much cheaper to replace just lenses
he said they were an old pair of oakleys, obviously you would not do something like this on a out of the shop pair of expensive oakleys, you would just buy them the color you want!!
Look you lot of fashion victims I have jut had a bad weekend thying to figure out if pre war 26 in tyres were any better then the stuff I can buy now how about doing a post on that ??
