If you don't have a vinyl cutting machine (like me) for lettering then this is how I do it, it's not difficult and the results can be stunning. The video follows the rebuilding of the port wing after the towing accident, the repair video is linked at the end. Hit the 'like' button if you get some useful info, thanks.

I couldn't help it. This brings back memories, great job. Is sort of the old fashion way of cutting vinyl letters but it does work and I do it now and then at home when I don't want to run back to the shop. I've been in that business since 1981 and have cut thousands of jobs by hand, anything from 1/2" tall letters to almost 4' tall letters. But now we have computers to do it all. Once you lay out what you want from your computer (printouts) if you write down the fonts you used you can take it to almost any sign shop and they can retype it using their software and cut it. If you have a graphics software like CorelDraw or Illustrator you can just give the file to them on a USB flash drive. I do admire your technique, you have got it right with moving your elbow in or out to keep the knife on the line. We would trace the letters with a grease pencil directly onto the vinyl using a overhead projector then cut, but only through the vinyl not through the liner. That way it all stays together once you put the application tape on.

Old fashioned! I thought it was cutting edge 😁😁 I know techniques change over the years but sometimes it's nice to just get on with the job hands-on so to speak, thanks for the info Thomas 👍

One of those machines that, although a fair amount of money initially, saves a lot of time in the long run, especially if you do a lot of vinyl cutting. I've search for 'Cricket' but did you mean 'CriCut'? 🙂

@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes my wife has a Silhouette Cameo Vinyl cutter, works a treat with loads of tutorials etc on RU-vid for back up. You can usually scrounge vinyl offcuts from sign makers, saves money that way and there vinyl is good stuff.

Hi Cliff that did jazz it up quite a bit When I do lettering I print it reversed on sticky paper then aifix and stick it to th back of what's being cut then cut with scissors it is amazing how people have so many different ways to reach the same place thanks Cliff

Hi Barrie, welcome back, I don't as such but nose blocks are much the same as wing tips, Mark Robinson's made a video that explains the principle nicely, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uogjw0Wm4YE.html 👍

Brilliant technique, I am going to save this video and try this in the future, maybe with the TaylorCraft? 🤔 This is a very cool video 👍
@CliffHarveyRCPlanes
@CliffHarveyRCPlanes 3 года назад
As you're finishing the Taylorcraft in film you may want to consider one of those wheeled film aerators I've seen on other channels, this will help to avoid air bubbles. Another method is to put the decal on wet and leave to dry overnight before ironing although I haven't tried it personally (not over night anyhow). I have seen a little spiked roller advertised that is supposed to encourage hair growth when rolled on the scalp, I'm thinking of ordering one 😁😁😁
@RCTaildraggin
@RCTaildraggin 3 года назад
I have one of those, was never really sure how to use it.. to grow hair back, you will need hair plugs to fill the holes that this will make in your scalp 👍

Hi cliff. Nice work. I recently wanted to put DAJ-66 20. Onto my piper Cub wing. So I 3D printed stencils then used them to cut the letters out of black sticky back plastic. Have you thought of getting a 3D printer, they are very handy for making nose cones, motor mounts, brackets, wheels, All the designs are freely available from a website called Thingyverse.
@CliffHarveyRCPlanes
@CliffHarveyRCPlanes 3 года назад
That's a great idea Jon, I will get round to getting a 3d printer eventually. I was putting it off until they 'came of age' which I guess they are now 🙂

Post-moving to my new address I discovered that my Aristo F3F kit lacked the "U.S. Navy" decal for lower wings and my Royal P-6E kit has no "U.S. Army" (or rudder stripes, for that matter.)

Yes, it was a 'tex' finish I was sticking onto, I would have preferred to have used a tex on tex (as the stripes on the rudder) but I experimented with what I had, seems to have stuck pretty well although for good measure I could lightly spray it with matt lacquer 👍
