FYI - Niner warns against putting spacers on top of the stem. The expansion bolt is designed to offset the clamping force of the stem upon the carbon steerer tube. By putting spacers on top of the stem, the expansion bolt will not run the length of the stem, and not fully offset the clamping force. I ran mine with spacers on top (before I read the directions, haha) with no adverse consequences. So maybe Niner's warning is over-cautious lawyer-speak, but I thought I'd give you a heads up.
@jamese8508
@jamese8508 6 лет назад
I just saw in your RLT demo video that the bike from Niner HQ has spacers above the stem. I've gotta laugh! Unless you arranged it that way yourself I'd say it's proof positive that Niner's directions were indeed over cautious.

Can you get the compression caps for aluminium steerer tubes also? Sems like a better option than the star nut
@glennoc8585
@glennoc8585 6 лет назад
You can get a smooth expansion plug for alloy steerers but pretty much everyone uses a star nut.
@glennoc8585

I use a longer BBB expansion plug for that very reason that you've highlighted. Some of the plugs supplied by the factories are too short imo. The BBB is very well priced and lightweight.

Excellent tutorial, thank you ! Just going back a few video's and off current-topic, but I just purchased an RKT9rdo (also ride FL). I feel 120mm fork with 46 mm offset would be best for me, but most forks I see now are 51 mm. Would you ever consider using an angleset to slacken out the front ?

Good vid Clint. Was that a fine tooth count blade that you were using? I've done a few tube cuts and i found the finer tooth blade gave a smoother edge. That niner frame looks really good.

hi after cutting the carbon steer tube, do we need make it bevel 45 deg with grind tool?
@ClintGibbs

I've never done that and personally I would not use a grinding tool on carbon other than some sandpaper to smooth it out.

I have a question about carbon forks. I just bought a new frameset, salsa vaya 2017, and it has a 15mm thru-axle in front, so I had to buy an adapter on my mavic allroad wheel that had 12mm thru-axle. Anyways, I fitted the adapter, and when I put the wheel on the fork, it does not slide to its place with no resistance, but the fork bends about 2-3mm to get the wheel in place. is that kind of "tightness" normal, or should there be no tension on a carbon fork? or did I just mess up something with the adapter? thanks!
@michaelsteven1090
@michaelsteven1090 3 года назад
You definitely don't want your wheel spreading the fork out 3mm from it's free position..The wheel spacer should fit snug but not forcing the legs outward.
@hauntyoo
@hauntyoo 3 года назад
@@michaelsteven1090 it's weird, cuz the 15mm adapter that I use, is 97mm without the fork-rests, and 102 with them. And the carbon fork is 99mm, so there's some tigtness for sure. I asked mavic about it, and they did not give a clear answer about why the adapter is not spot on 100mm...they said it will be fine though. I also asked the store about it, and they said it is how it should be, without any further explenation. Now, I just have to decide should I believe them, or buy a new wheelset alltogether.

Please, please do NOT use a hacksaw with a metal blade when cutting carbon, it can blunt and you can damage your fork by cutting it with a blunt blade. Use either a carbon specific blade or a blade for cutting tiles. They are the same thing. Otherwise great vid. Thumbs up
@walirifai
@walirifai 3 года назад
The tile cutting blade pro-tip is brilliant. The common thing between the carbon specific blade and tile cutting blade is the tungsten carbide grit edge. Look for a hacksaw blade with a carbide grit and it'll do the job right. Thanks for the tip!

JHeino10 right, that's why it's confusing. My fork doesn't seem to have one. Maybe because it's already integrated or because they missed it while building the bike?? (It's a carbon fork)

Remember (not You Sir, the others) to wipe the steerer tube really, really well to prevent the carbon fiber dust from getting into the grease that's in the headset bearings.

There are a few issues I'd raise with this video: Waving an exposed blade around near your shiny new carbon forks is just asking for trouble. Keep it sheathed until you need it and save yourself the regret. In fact, just put the knife down and mark the steerer tube with a pencil or marker. A fine white correction pen is ideal because it makes the mark easier to see when setting the fork in the saw guide and any reside can be wiped away. Using a normal hacksaw blade frays the carbon strands in your steerer which can bring about delamination issues further down the line. If you must use a saw blade, choose one with a high TPI count (teeth per inch). Better yet, invest in a carbon-specific blade which behaves more like sanding than cutting. These are slightly wider than a cutting blade, so you may need to buy an appropriate saw guide to accommodate it, or widen the gap in your regular saw guide with a couple of shims. Lastly, the carbon bung used in this video would not provide adequate reinforcement for the steerer tube inside of the stem clamp due to the additional spacers on top of the stack. It is important that the bung covers the full height of the stem clamp to prevent crushing the steerer tube.
@michaelsteven1090
@michaelsteven1090 3 года назад
What?..Waving a blade around?..Assuming the rest of the world is stupid, and your not?..the "full height of the stem clamp"..The reason why he has additional spacers on top is so you can adjust the stem height as necessary..He mentions that..Stop being brainy and making things more complicated for others, Einstein..
