The Ivy League haircut for children is a great hairstyle for those kids who have a circular growth pattern around their head and hair in the crown that always wants to stand up. The idea is that we clipper the crown area the same to the same length as the sides and back and blend into the top and front. Especially with a circular growth pattern the hair lays down nicely and combs to the side. It also grows out evenly and is easy for the child or parents to brush in the morning.
To begin this haircut start with a detachable blade clipper such as an oster classic 76, Andis BGRC, Andis MVP, Oster Octane, Andis Supra ZR, or one of the many detachable blade clippers available. Use a slow fading motion and begin by cutting the crown area with a 3 ½ blade. After clipper cutting the hair over the crown cut the sides and back. Use a slow fading motion and blend into the previous cut area in the back with a 3 ½ blade as well as fade into the top. The slow fading motion will help you avoid leaving a heavy weight line to blend out when you cut the top. Repeat this step with a 2 metal detachable blade all of the way around the head. create a tapered outline to make the fade stand out. Use and adjustable clipper such as the Andis Envy, Andis Master, Wahl Designer, Wahl Senior, or Oster fast feed in the longest blade setting and use a scooping motion around the outline of the haircut to fade out. Repeat this step with lever adjusted halfway and then the shortest setting scooping the clipper a little bit lower each time to finish the taper.
Last, use a t-outliner or trimmer to finish the haircut. Line off the sideburns and the diagonal line behind the ears without cutting into the natural hairline. On the back of the neck use an upward shaving motion without getting too close to the tapered or faded hairline. Now blend the sides and back into the top. Use the clipper over comb technique and blend the top back area first. Angle the teeth in the front of the clipper comb and away from the front and use the crown length as your guide. Cut across the top blending the two lengths together.
Next, start from the front and blend to the guide in the top back section. Use the clipper over comb technique and create the center guide. Repeat this step on each side until the top is cut and fully blended to the sides and back. When the cut is complete style the hair. Blow dry the hair thoroughly before applying any type of water soluble styling product. Apply the Zorian of New York grooming cream for a medium hold and medium shine that will not weigh the hair down but will hold for the day.

Fantastic kids haircut, Greg. That styling cream gives this boy's hair a clean and smart look(he seemed to enjoy the experience of getting his hair cut!). 👍😀💈

Any tips for getting kids to keep their heads still when using detailers/shears? I've put accidental lines in a cut because the kid has moved their head at the wrong moment. How do you deal professionally with kids who will not sit still or even worse scream and punch?

If I have a young child who thrashes around, I'll decline service. It can cause an injury to the customer or yourself. I can handle the screaming. I usually hold their head while using detailers.

@@barberjeff67 thanks for your kind advice. In my training I was taught NEVER to hold a client's head, but I guess with kids you just need to sometimes

@@TimelordUK you're welcome! I'd rather hold their head to keep them from hurting themselves or ruining the haircut. And some old school barbers told me that was the universal sign that the customer is moving too much! Lol. Cheers!

Greg, which product are you using in your hair, the grooming cream?
@GregZorian

I am using the firm hold gel. I apply when my hair is completely dry for maximum hold and the wet look. Since the products are water soluble the more dampness in the hair the less hold you will get.
