I have been through so many stylists that cannot grasp what I ask for. It's so frustrating. I'm a dog stylist for 36 yrs and I understand how hair flows. If I could reach around my head I would cut my own hair. I can't even get stylists to look at photos to help explain the look I'm looking for. I have the perfect texture and thickness for this cut. I may try the ponytail shag cut and do it myself. Thanks for listening to my vents ;)
oh my god. This is the perfect shag cut. I've been researching forever for something not as CHOPPY as the ones I've seen. When I first fell in love with the cut, it was just like this.
I've been a hairdresser for many years, and have cut lots of shags! I love watching videos like yours because I always learn something new 😊 I think it's SO important for stylists to continue to learn & grow. Our craft is ever changing and we need to stay up with the changes through constant education 💯 Thanks for making these videos!
I knew we would be seeing the cool early 80s rock looks again. 37 years in the industry and this is one of the most powerful feminine styles for a woman. It exudes strength and sensuality.
I have watched so many shag cuts and this one is perfection! I feel like a shag can turn into a mullet so quickly and you easily showed how to keep it simple :)
Omg, I just cut my bangs and they turned out amazing!! I took my time and did a bit at a time, so worth it. Thank you for your video and your clear explanations, so easy to follow. I watched several videos and decided to follow your technique because it was the easiest. Thank you, thank you!!! Now if I could just gather the courage to cut the rest of my hair, that would be great too. I have long wavy hair and I’m terrified to mess up something in the back that I can’t see, lol.
WOW !!! I just tried the bang portion on my bangs and they have NEVER looked BETTER !!! ( Unfortunately, my hair is much thinner, and head shape is different, so mine aren't as thick as your example ) , but nonetheless, I am sooooo grateful for this fantastic demonstration ! You are so talented and an EXCELLENT instructor - TY so much !
I love it. So much easier to have each side the same length. I’ve been cutting my own hair since1980. Laying was fading out and very few folks knew how to do the cut. I keep my front hair layered and my back is long to my mid back.
I get the best of both worlds. Long hair and short hair. Living in the jet stream in Cheyenne, we have a lot of windy days. On those days, I wear my in a ponytail, folded over ponytail, or bun.
This is such an amazingly executed educational video. As a barber I see a lot of videos on youtube or even insta ( especially for a shag or mullet) that you can tell the stylist doesn't have a routine for cutting and just fumbled around and ended up with a resemblance of whatever cut it may be and thought "that kinda worked" then put up a how to video, where as its obvious you actually work in a salon and know how to properly do the haircut and have clean and confident sections and know exactly how the cut is gona turn out!! That really makes me happy its a one time watch and a competent stylist can easily now perform the cut, knowing the exact way to cut each section..really a proper educator and thats really refreshing/exciting to see. Definitely gonna subscribe! 🙌
Honestly Nicole, THANK YOU for taking the time to give me this detailed message. I appreciate your perspective & honesty! I also wanted to thank you for watching my video. Also I am a hairdresser in the salon 4 days a week and l teach what I do on a daily basis. Glad you could see that. So from the bottom of my heart, Thank you!
@@dumdum7749 hey that’s awesome! I hope you’re feeling better, I am all too familiar with that feeling & I know that sucks. I honestly just love bangs, I have had them on and off my whole life, and then when I found the best hair dresser I’ve ever had back in 2016 I trusted her to do the bangs, and she actually gave me a shag haircut with curtain bangs from what I told/described to her I wanted and it was awesome. I maintained that with her for years, then like 10 weeks after a cut I was like I need a bang trim I can’t see 😆- she was out of town and I was like well how hard is a bang trim it’s just what I have, but shorter - well a guy literally cut my bangs straight across, didn’t point cut and all of the hair I had framing my face was now a THICK A$$ bang. That was in 2019 and now my hair is finally manageable! I was so embarrassed to tell her I went to another guy! She softened them up and taught me how to do a trim (she was just short of an hour drive) so she knew I was committed to just seeing her. Then enter the pandemic - so now that I’m confident with the bang trim I really want to go for the full shag cut on myself. If you read that journey thanks LOL hair is a big deal to me. Have you colored your own hair?
Hey Moon, thank you from the bottom of my heart! I appreciate you reaching out and commenting! Plus if I can help non professional and professionals have better hair days my job is complete.
I'm sure it would look amazing on you, not sure what your face shape is like but people are usually attracted to what would look good on them. "usually" :)
I’ve been watching few of shag hair cut tutorial and kind of confused about back of head layering but now by watching this video with tips and trick it’s easy to cut . Thank you for sharing your beautiful work🙏🏻❤️
Thanks for taking the time to go over the importance of correctly styling the bangs, this is often a part that is skipped over and I felt like I could never nail it for my client. Definitely understood what I was doing wrong and how to fix it now! Thanks so much!
Hey! Charlie just cut my hair like like because I live in the 70s and have always loved a shag!! Thank you for helping me as a Makeup Artist understand what I love in hair! ☆♡☆
@@jakethompsonhair I always go my own 70s way! I love love my Charlie P shag. Hopefully one day we can meet face to face backstage or otherwise. I'm going to enter NAHA Makeup once I get my team together. Love all your super talent Art. 💘
This pulled up on my recommended videos and it was something I never knew I needed to watch! I love hair tutorials and although I can’t cut my own or anybody else’s hair, this was super interesting to watch! Reminds me of Stevie nicks💛
Jake , thankyou so much for your video! … I’ve finally got the fringe I always wanted but no hairdresser gave me -and I did it myself - I love it….wish you were based in the UK as I’d love an appointment with you , but in the meantime thankyou for such an easy to follow method that truly works …. Lisa UK 🇬🇧xx
you are the real deal. you accomplished the mission with perfection. The hair is beautiful and the tutorial was so perfectly structured and easy to follow. Thank you! Well done!
Thank you so much for this! It’s my first time cutting my own hair- and my bangs turned out stunning :)) thank you so so much for this informative tutorial! Keep up the beautiful work
I love how you teach and this tutorial gave me the confidence back to shake up my own hair for once. HUGE thanks, this tutorial is foolproof, beautiful cut and style
+Jake Thompson you are such a awsome teacher! You speak clearly, you take your time to explain everything.Very thoroughly taught.I wish my beauty school instructor was like that!I would still being doing hair if I had you for my teacher😂She sucked the life out of me and ruined my excitement about doing hair. But I appreciate your patience and instructing skills👍God bless you❤
Wow, thank you soooooo much Get Exposed! I can't thank you enough for this lovely message! I'm sorry your hair school experience was awful, it's sad cause it happens to a lot of hairdressers. Glad I could clarify these hair techniques. Thanks!
@@jakethompsonhair Yes unfortunately that is the truth! It happens alot in beauty schools. But I'm glad I found you out in the universe!!So now I have a positive and thoughtful soul that I can learn from😁Thank you for the videos🤗
I love and want this style just like the great 80s.... Thank you so much for your great videos... Keep them coming and wish wish wish you were my hair styles🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ YOU r amazing 😍
Glad you like them Crissy! Truly honored you are liking my content. I'd love to do your hair, if you come to slc utah let me know, we'll make it happen.
I am a HUGE fan of Stevie Nicks and she's currently touring with Billy Joel. Hope she comes to NY in 2023. Just made an appointment with my hair dresser to get this style. Thank You for this video.
Yes thank you so much for taking the time to show us this amazing cut ! I never really knew how this hair stylist was cut ! Today someone called and ask if we knew how to cut a long shag I Immediately got on here and find you thank you’🙏
I love this!!! Totally gonna try this on myself but I may use a razor! I went to a lady who did this amazingly, and as a hairdresser, I kind of want to try to tackle it 👀 haha thank you!
Hey Mia, sorry miscommunication can be a hard thing to overcome when trying to communicate what you want. You can try pictures or screenshot images from this video. Good luck Mia.
i’m soooo excited to have found u! i’m a licensed cosmetologist but i haven’t cut any hair in years and this has helped out and definitely made me miss cutting hair which i never got real experience doing since i went into brows but this piqued my interest even if on myself ! thx so much 😊!
Old school stylist here. Everything old is new again!! Old fashioned face framing. I believe Paul mcgregor created it for Jane Fonda ! To my knowledge it became popular because it was her that was the first well known person to have it , doesn’t mean someone else didn’t have it. And the term shag i think he coined because of the styles unkempt appearance. At the end of the day it’s just a layered cut. A good one but just layers. Great styles never go away !! Love the video !!
💚 this haircut ✂ I have been cutting mine & my husband's hair for several years also, will definitely be trying this style. Thanks for the video🎥😻 Sue Ellen from WV🇺🇸
Wow that’s beautiful I always love the long layered haircut and I love the curtain layer around the face that’s exactly what I wanted I wish you could cut my hair🥰💕
@@jakethompsonhair Wow! What an offer!!! If Charr doesn’t do it, can I?!!!! I live in Los Angeles but have friends in Orem I can visit! Or do you ever travel and do hair in the LA area? PLEASE lmk...it’d be such an honor to have you do my hair...REALLY!
Welp, I guess I’m cutting my hair tomorrow now that I understand how to get the angles and flips that actually look correct. Thanks for this great tutorial! x
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE this style! But, have found it virtually *IMPOSSIBLE* to get it at ANY salon I've gone to! Have spent a small fortune trying to get it (or anything even REMOTELY CLOSE!) Thank you so much for sharing your talent with everyone. And although I love your technique and style of teaching, I feel that too much was edited out of this video for me to feel confident enough to try this cut. I'm a little sketchy on details like... how far back is that upper Fringe section taken? And, how far back are the side sections taken? Nothing was covered concerning the actual "sectioning". Where do we stop when we get to the farther back back sides? Where exactly we begin the upper back first cut, that's on top of the crown? And lastly, how do we trim up the bottom length in the back? Lots of questions (after watching MULTIPLE times). I'd appreciate SO MUCH if you could answer these questions. I've felt so bad about my appearance for about 4 yrs now, bc I've had so many bad salon experiences in recent years... I'm just ready to get back to feeling like *ME* again... and THIS is the style that does that! Much appreciation... thanks.
Never thought I was a shag girl but I messed up my own bangs and my stylist kinda turned my bob into a blondie-like shag. Im ok with it i might keep it a shag and grow it out that way. Showing these videos is good because it helps people who wanna cut their own hair not mess it up .
I totally dig what you’re doing so I liked and subscribed immediately and I almost NEVER subscribe to ANY channels! THANK YOU! This is the haircut of my dreams and I can never describe it right to my hair dresser. The shape is PHENOMINAL! It’s perfect! The curtain bangs are perfect, the sides are perfect, the top...EVERYTHING! I wish you could do my hair. I have to find out where you’re based. Till then, I’ll see if my hair dresser can do this. I have to ask, because I really don’t know and I don’t want to hurt my hairdresser’s feelings but would it be insulting if I had her watch this video before doing my hair?
Hey Mikamamma, 1st off thank you! 2nd, I'm glad you love how I design hair. 3rd, It really depends on her ego, if she has an ego I wouldn't show her if she is open to learning new things then yes. The reason I say this is cause some artist are egocentric, some are extremely open-minded.
@@jakethompsonhair ah yes...that makes sense. I think she’s open minded enough so I’ll give it a shot🤞Thank you for all of your great content (so glad I subscribed!) and for taking the time to reply. Truly appreciated!
Thank you for being so thorough. I really appreciate the information. So many videos talking about how to get a curtain fringe/shag by people who are not professionals. Really??! The blind leading the blind with scissors?
GR8 pointers for this do it yourself ! I know ,I know a stylist can do it better...after the pandemic👍 I wish I had a hundred of those heads to practice on every so often I'll buy something like a Barbie doll and practice on that. Those full heads are compelling though.. pricey so for now I'm going to stick with the mop heads and Barbie dolls 😄😄😄 The tip for that powder is fantastic I had some of that stuff I did not know how to "handle" it.
I LOVE this style. Exactly what i want. Have qualms about finding a stylist who will cut this as expertly as you. Any suggestions about how to avoid a great disappointment?😊😊
Love it wish I could find some one who could do this exact shag. It’s super hard to find someone who will do this exact fringe cut ..always ends messed up
Hey Maureen, yes I would. I would essentially leave anywhere from an 1" to 2" longer to compensate for the curl shrinking back up. Hope that help, good luck
WOW love it!!!! Would you consider doing a synthetic WIG wig styling video doing a long haired Farrah on a wig with her early 1976 "shag" look haircut for women who have thinning hair etc and are wearing wigs. If Farrah's hair style was so popular everywhere and we seem to be trending back to shag,,,big hair,,,etc why not show her real cut on a long wig and style it to look like Farrah really did in Charlie'''s Angels. Man I would LOVE to have a wig or topper that really has her cut and styling not a costume styled wig that looks like plastic or a disco wig. Your cuts are amazing maybe my favorite of all as well as your calm positive attitude. I have a cheaper wig of Farrah but bangs aren't right...sides curl back well and I love it but would like a nicer one. THANKS for your great videos!!!! Marian
I’ve commented before on other videos of yours that I would love to see an entire video of your styling process of the blow out rather than fast forward through or show just random segments. One of the main reasons is, in this video, in particular, I am IN LOVE with how you styled this cut but you say to keep the round brush completely vertical and then in some parts of the video I see the brush angled (10:43) and at some parts even horizontal (11:34) (11:50) I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but my flips aren’t traveling back on the sides but rather forming more into one big tube like curl in the front. Maybe my hair is too long? Is this style doable on chest length hair? Maybe I need more layers? I don’t know. Would appreciate so much seeing how you, step by step, blow out this cut, though. In the meantime, any advice would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks for all you do.
