Ben - thanks so much for these videos. They are much more digestible in small 10ish min chunks compared to the 60ish min videos from the past.

by the way ben, i really want to thank you in this place. i've been looking at your videos and the workshop diaries for a long time, and it's because of you that i had the courage to start building my first guitar as well as the knowledge and the tips to help me not butcher the whole thing in the first few steps ;)

Hey thanks! I like your CA+Masking tape method, and the marking knives are a great way to go. I just went with the framing square, paper template, and spray adhesive because I'm not as handy with hand saws as you are. I'm working on that though. I'm making an effort to use more hand tools and fewer machine tools, because I think it will be more fun.

I would have liked to see some demonstration of cutting the slots, I am having trouble keeping a uniform depth across the board even with a depth stop on the saw. I always seem to make a V-shape on the side closest to me on every pull stroke, so one side is wider and deeper, any tips?
@givemeajackson

aw man, could have used this one just a few hours earlier ;) messed up one slot, the rest went well. i improvised another method: get a slightly flexible plastic ruler, push it against your fretboard in the desired position, hold the saw against the ruler to make the cut.

Thanks for all the tips. Quick question.. how deep do the cuts need to be? I noticed you to to the start of the teeth, but not all saws are the same. Many thanks

great video, thanks. Is it hard to cut frets ...?

The most ridiculously simple fret slot depth hand cutting tip I heard is to use a moderately bright source of light on one side of the saw blade. It just has to be bright enough to cast a shadow and at an angle e.g. the afternoon sun is perfect. As soon as no light shows under the saw blade (through the teeth) the depth is about right.

Ben, whats your opinion on using a template, sled, table saw and fret cutting circular saw blades?

How does one cut fret slots deeper when doing a neck radius / level and refret. On a guitar with bindings such as a lespaul
@Lydsum
@Lydsum 4 года назад
the binding is applied after fret slotting.

I thought using a knife line was common practice when cutting cross grain....It's known as a knife wall in paul sellers speak...
@CrimsonCustomGuitars
@CrimsonCustomGuitars 9 лет назад
I agree, the problem is that so many guitar builders are incredibly insular and know next to nothing about other forms of woodworking.. I know I am guilty of that myself, there is so much to learn that we forget about the basics sometimes.
@Barrygee
@Barrygee 9 лет назад
You just get a nice crisp pristine cross grain cut with a knife line and starting the saw cut is so much easier when you can seat the kerf into the groove. Squaring the knife line off around all the faces also helps ensure a square cut with no tear out. ...I watch inordinate amounts of Paul Sellers videos.....as well as my now daily fix of Crimson guitars.....I think you should tidy up the aluminium handles and lose the hammered finish...that's my opinion anyway

Hi Ben, This might be an amazingly ignorant question to ask, something my wife says that I'm good at, but assuming that your pencil line is thicker than the line made by the knife, do you have make sure the score is along the edge of the pencil line, or do you just aim for the middle? Or does it not matter that much at all?! Cheers.
@CrimsonCustomGuitars
@CrimsonCustomGuitars 9 лет назад
Beargrizzly76 it certainly does matter, I aim for the dead center of the line and use really really sharp pencils when I do the marking out

None of the saws on EBAY have kerf width mentioned. And I'd kick my own ass if I ever gave SXXw MXc money. (name disguised to avoid shaming Stew Mac) Those guys could take a banana, call it a guitar banana, draw a guitar on it, and sell it for 50X the price of a regular banana

+Ash Scott it's gone 1am here and you just made me laugh out loud irl! Very well done! We mention kerf on our saw at crimsonguitars.com/store/guitar-saw/ It's 0.0222" and seems to work with most frets.. B

Forgive me if this is an incredibly noob-ish comment; I am, after all, a noob by all counts. How does a marking knife differ from a scalpel blade? You spoke as if this was a massive change to your method, but it appeared as though both methods comprised of "measure, mark with small blade, saw with big blunt saw, saw with smaller sharper saw". I assume if I had the two in hand the difference would be more than sufficiently evident, but having no experience handling either, what about this constitutes such a "change of tune", as you put it?
@CrimsonCustomGuitars
@CrimsonCustomGuitars 9 лет назад
Manny Cowdrey-Cuberos the change of tune is actually more about using a knife at all, it was a general comment about guitar builders and western woodworkers than a comment on my method, although I used to only recommend the knife cut if you were a beginner.. I now use it myself all the time!
@CrimsonCustomGuitars
@CrimsonCustomGuitars 9 лет назад
Manny Cowdrey-Cuberos oh, and flat blade versus curved blade of this marking knife just act differently, I use both for different jobs and marginally prefer a straight blade tbh
@DonCYHaute
@DonCYHaute 9 лет назад
So it simply a matter of preference between the curved and straight blade, but both are equally suited for the work they do (or at least this job). Got it. Thanks for the responses :)

fret slots need to be accurate to at least 1/10th of a millimetre. No printout comes near to that. I stress if my CNC is 0.2mm out over a metre. If I was doing them by hand I would mark off from a notched fret rule, not paper

You want more viewers and more 100% veiws ( someone watching the whole video front to end ) on your channel .. This is what the algorithm is looking for in order for your videos to make it to the first 10 spots after a search or to bring it up random suggestions. 10 and a half minute video ... 7 and a half minutes of talking before we actually get to the project or show an actual fretboard or any close up.... Am I being critical ? Yes .. But only because I'm trying to help you out.. in this fast paced society that the internet has made us , everyone is in a hurry. Especially when it's something looking for information instead of entertainment. Cheers
