How to cut gemstones with Dremel | DIY rotary tool water tank dropper

With electroforming, I use a lot of gemstones. I buy them already cut and polished or rough. Sometimes they need to be adapted to the project that I'm doing and, especially, the rough ones, need to be cut.
Cutting stones is relatively easy, but inconvenient because of all the dust they produce during the process.
Breathing silica dust or other kind of mineral's is not good for your health. Using a mask could be a solution, but the result, in the long-term, will be a lab cover with a layer of dust even if you clean every day, and you don't want it in your electroforming bath.
The best solution that every gemstone worker knows is WATER.
Water will prevent all the dust from flying everywhere, but I don't have all the machinery to work with stones, so I needed to do something cheap and fast.
Since I already have a rotary tool with diamond discs, I decide to do some adaptation to it.
If something seems missing, or it's not very clear to you, there will be more explanations in my blogs.

CuForming is a project of passion born from our love for both science and crafting.
Since 2018, we've been exploring the fascinating world of electroforming, where we merge the wonders of electrochemistry with geology, botany, zoology and the artistry of crafting.
Copper, with its versatility and beauty, is our favorite material to work with, and our designs are inspired by the intricate textures found in nature.
Through experimentation with chemicals, various materials, and the electroforming process, we create unique pieces that celebrate the intersection of science and art.
With inherited skills in electrical engineering, painting, sculpting and materials assembly, and the curiosity about new technologies such as 3D printing, CuForming is where science meets creativity.

Recently I discovered why the exopy didn't work. The bottle is made of Polypropylene. This kind of plastic is immune to all glues except for the ones specific for it.

Using the knife and scissors i was like... Dude, don't you have a dremel? 🙈😂

I made it to avoid dust. If I had to use the dremel to cut the plastic and make dust, what's the point?

Not to mention I have found that the rotation of the tool can be to fast and causes the plastic to start melting ....it can cause a big mess

Maybe better to hold the Dremel rotary with the Dremel Workstation ? or right ?

Hello and thank you so much for this tutorial. I followed it and adapted my "stone cutting/forming workstation" with some clear plexiglass as splash guards and it works Wonderfull. With this tool I take them till the finish state. Thank you, much appreciated. Keep up the good work🙏

Thank you, I'm really happy you liked the idea. I took the first simple thing that everybody can find in their home that could be adapted to contain water splashes. I'm curious to know how you glue plexiglass sheets together, that's something I always wanted to do since I have lots of it laying around my garage.

@@cuforming I don't use glue because I want to take it out and clean it, so my method is screws and plastic zippers. I can't attach pictures because I would have done it to thank you. 🙏

Thank you for this comment, I'm glad you like it. After I used it for a while, I've added a piece of filtering cloth around the water pump because there was too much silica dust accumulating in the water and I didn't want it to clog it and burn it.

Why using a knife when you have a rotary saw?

please I am extremely dumb where is the water coming from? and where does it go?
@cuforming
@cuforming Год назад
The pump collects the water from the bottom and push it up through the hose. You don't see it in the video, but I had to put a filter under the pump to keep the dust out of the cycle. If you need more explanation, ask anytime.

Thanks for the creativity! I've been using a similar system with just a gravity drip bag to keep the dust down on my homemade flat lap, but I'd never considered using a fish tank pump. You've sparked some new ideas. Thanks for sharing!
@cuforming

Thank you. After a few uses, I had to cover the pump holes with a sheet of filtering sponge, the same used in the aquarium, to avoid the dust to go back in circle.

nice idea, just hope he water will not trickle into the machine. maybe use a flexible shaft to be safe
@cuforming
@cuforming 8 месяцев назад
I did this because I didn't have a flexible shaft at the time. It's safe if you keep the hole big enough just for the bit to go through.

Can I cut gems with a dremel like quarts and amethyst
@cuforming
@cuforming 10 месяцев назад
Yes, you can. Diamond wheels for rotary tools are very common, and you can cut any kind of stone with them. Try this: amzn.to/47m8YOB . Just keep in mind that you can't cut bigger stones than the size of the wheel.

I use a drip-tank instead of an electric pump. I also installed a see-through splash-guard above the cutting disc. This is perfect for cutting $$$$ rough to minimize loss.

How does the pump hold up to the mud from the stones?
@cuforming

I didn't realize it at that time. After a few uses, I added a textile filter sheet around the pump's slots.

Good idea although not sure how long that pump will last, they are supposed to be fully submerged in water or they just burn out

In my experience scissors are better for cutting plastic. The heat created from a rotary tool will soften or melt most plastic making it resist cutting and will gum up the bit.
