I try the different methods people recommend and find out what is actually the best.

I cut these 4x6 mats all of the time. Dewalt reciprocating saw with a short metal blade. Takes about one minute or less for a 6ft pass. No struggle whatsoever, and no killing my hands.

Those are the EXACT mats I bought at Tractor Supply.

I agree that a box cutter (carpet cutter/ razor blade) worked better for me than most power tools, but one power tool that works well is a vibrating type multi tool with plunge cut blade. I also found with this tool that pushing too hard slows the cutting but a light touch and it will glide through the rubber easily.

we take an jig saw blade..grind the teeth off and then put a sharp edge on it like a knife and it cuts the mat like butter. we use the same thing when making tire art.

The key is to add pressure to the seam as you're cutting it. Take the free edge and spread it open as you cut.

Thanks for this man, I wanted to look around and find some advice on cutting these before I butchered them.

I use a lot of soapy water to keep the blade moving

If you would have reversed the carpet knife by flipping it upside down the handle would have provided more leverage and depth.

An oscillating saw worked the best for us. Minimal mess, little time spent, and no fighting with the things, and you can do precision cuts. Plus, oscillating saws are awesome for notching the annoying little corners and can be used for other applications like when wood working.

Thanks for the suggestion. I can see the oscillating saw being useful for cutting close to fit. I am not sure why I didn't think of adding that to the video lol

Definitely the jig saw works much better than the electric kitchen knife. Wondering if a circular saw might work, I need to cut some thick rubber mats as well. Thanks 🙏

Circular saw is a nightmare. The blade heats up, it binds, tons of smoke, smells like a massive tire fire. 😂

May I ask what brand of stall mat is featured in your video? Thank you.

Too much blab. I'm going to try a Metabo cutter.

Is the summary that you recommend picking up several carpet cutting blades and go that route? Sounded like you didn't advise the jigsaw.

@John Lanigan so sorry for the late reply. I have been teaching a seminar over the weekend and for some reason didn't even get a notification for your comment. That would be my recommendation yes. That is what worked best for me. I was able to do what I needed to do rather quickly that route and it is fairly cheap. Let me know how it turns out. As far as the jigsaw it didn't work for me. I tried a number of blades both with teeth (different size teeth) and a actual knife blade and none of them worked well. perhaps getting a thick blade and grinding the teeth down and making it really sharp would work I haven't tried that method yet. If you do try this method be mindful you will want somebody helping to hold the mat as the jigsaw blade vibrates. Using the carpet blades is much easier to do by yourself.

A circular saw with an abrasive metal cutting blade works like a train toilet. It's stinks, it leaves a mess of rubber dust everywhere to vacuum up, but man is it easy and fast. Clamp the 2x4 to the matt and use it as a guide for your saw to cut nice and straight.

Where did you find those mats? The ones I found look a bit cheaper quality.

I spent a good bit of time with a carpet cutting knife as a result of this video. Nope, they suck. Used the reciprocating saw and it cut them like butter. I used soapy water in a spray bottle and it made it even better. Do not use a carpet knife.

Brooks, thanks for sharing! Not all mats are the same so it is very possible that your mat is of a different fiber or even material. Also not all carpet knives are the same. I've had carpet knives that wouldn't even cut carpet well. I am sure no tool is perfect for every scenario, that is what worked for me. I am glad that the reciprocal saw worked for you. I was finding that it was vibrating so much i would need somebody to hold the mat down to keep a straight cut.

I put 3 2x6's stacked under the mat on the line. Sprayed with soapy water and used my foot to hold the mat down. Worked like a charm.
