The size of your saw doesn't limit the size of your project. In this video, I show you how to cut a 32" script word on my 20" DeWALT scroll saw with straight cutting blades.
What you need to #DIY:
Scroll Saw ( I use the DeWALT DW788 20" Saw)
Drill
#5 MGT Blades
Painters Tape
Printed Design (see how to print large format designs video)
Spray Adhesive
1/2" Birch Plywood (approx 12" tall and 34" wide - cut to size of your word)
Stretchy Arms (Just kidding, but they do help!)

Thank you for this amazing video. I did a piece last night with 1/4" and got about 75% done and realized just how unstable the piece was. Simple tape on the back would have done wonders for me. Also, I made the mistake of not putting down tape before I glued the paper on. I was able to peel and sand it back luckily. Doing it all on a vintage Delta 24"

That was a great video. I've cut several over sized projects and have used many of the tips you described.My next challenge is to cut large slabs of wood. My first attempt was 6 foot wide and about 14' tall. It was a gorgeous piece of cedar with a live edge that I was afraid to ruin. So I backed out and made it a triptychs; cutting it in three easier to handle pieces. It turned out greater than I thought. Now I am ready to cut on an 8 foot cedar slab, keeping it in one piece. I plan to use a spiral blade and roller ball outfeed supports. Any other thoughts on this? Have you used spiral blades on larger projects? Thanks

Is applying the green tape under the printed work a crucial step? What happens to the wood if no green stuff is applied and it’s just the word print?
@OakAndFeatherDecor
@OakAndFeatherDecor 3 года назад
The tape is applied to protect the wood from the spray glue I use to attach my printed design. If you spray the glue directly onto on to the wood, it can be incredibly messy and hard to sand off. This can also create uneven finishes. You can also use contact Paper or something similar to protect the material

I just bought a Ryobi scroll saw and the wood bounces a lot I have to hold it pretty firmly for it to not bounce cou,d it be my blade??/ 😫
@OakAndFeatherDecor
@OakAndFeatherDecor 2 года назад
It could be the blade, or it could be your speed. Typically if it's bouncing alot, it means the teeth are catching and pulling the wood. If you think you have the right blade for the material you are cutting, then I'd increase speed to see if that helps!

Would a spiral blade work better?
@OakAndFeatherDecor
@OakAndFeatherDecor 2 года назад
A spiral blade would work but I find with plywood I get a lot of tear out. I also find them super fast cutting due to the higher TPI, and I haven't quite mastered them. If you are able to use them effectively, they would work for sure.
@carolrandall6812

@bobbirchmeyer1287
@bobbirchmeyer1287 3 года назад
Couldn't you use a spiral blade and eliminate all that movement?
@OakAndFeatherDecor
@OakAndFeatherDecor 3 года назад
You absolutely could use a spiral. However, I personally find the aggressive nature of spiral blades due to the higher TPI can really cause a lot of tear out, especially when using plywood. They also cut much faster which can be hard to keep under control when cutting larger pieces. But if you can master them for sure can make bigger pieces a bit easier!

Numbers just don't lie...the majority of fingers lost in workshops are by experienced workers who don't "need" or use safety equipment...i hope you continue to have the luck you are having until you wake up and start using the hold down clamp as the MANUFACTURER intends and RECOMMENDS on the VERY FIRST PAGE OF THE MANUAL in GENERAL SAFETY RULES!!!! Keep your fingers people...you will need them later.

@OakAndFeatherDecor 2 года назад
Safety is important! With a scroll saw, dust mask, eye protection and ear protection are key! The hold down clamp on my scroll saw actually caused a lot more issues for me with it on, and I find it much easier to avoid the blade without it. Thanks for the comment and warning to others.
