If you have a video and would like to remove multiple sections then Avidemux could be the tool you're looking for. I used to record a TV show with a Digital TV Tuner and Recorder and I used Avidemux to cut out all the commercials. It's a very simple process.

Where the little red bar is after you delete the selection, is there an easy way to put a transition in there? I've got cutting my videos down but want to add a transition at the cut points.

Avidemux has very basic fade/in fade/out transitions using the filters & transitions. When I need to add transitions to a video I use either Kdenlive or Shotcut. These programs have a better timeline for easily adding transitions and they immediately allow you to preview your transition. They both have a huge selections of transitions. Avidemux cuts the video on key frames or I-frames, you can't select an exact timecode to cut on. To cut precisely, you need to re-encode the video, which takes more time. Kdenlive or Shotcut can cut at exact points, but you'll need to re-encode the video.
