Great video of this process! I truly appreciate the 'old school' approach because the fundamentals of the process was what I was looking for and found here. Thanks for the knowledge as I'll be incorporating this in an upcoming project.

Those are the most beautiful threads I’ve ever seen. Stock pipe doesn’t even look like that.

excellent video. I have a wannabe know-it-all boss that kept trying to argue with me about breaking the chips telling me not to break the chips and that he has threaded "hundreds of threads" even though he is a mere service plumber... which only in extremely rare circumstances would use a threader. As an install plumber and a steamfitter, I believe in doing it right or not doing it at all. I will send this video to him so he can learn to not be an argumentative ass.

Interesting. I too have heard not to break the chip. A co worker was doing this and jammed the die up and broke teeth. Im guessing it was because he pinched a chip in the reverse direction. He said he was backing off the die. I am curious what the die manufacturer recommends. I came here looking for the answer lol

@@chudrustler breaking the chips is a necessary step so that you do not prematurely wear or break the die. You should never have to get it to thread with excessive force. Smooth firm motions and plenty of oil will do the trick. I have threaded tons of joints and only very few times I have had chewed threads (cheap steel pipe from Turkey). I reckon your coworker wasn't so gentle with the threading.

@@madmike9398 thanks for your response. So we carried on today and the debate continued. We are using ridgids ratcheting threader. I pulled the instruction manual and it says to run in and then only to back out in completion. Im not a pipefitter just a millwright so not my expertise. The boss told the guy to quarter turn reverse to break chip too.

I use 140 grade gear oil, It doesn’t run all over the place and you use much less oil

Was that an NPT or NPS die. It looked like NPS to me. I’m trying to straighten out some stripped threads on a tracktor spindle but can only find an NPT die locally.
