I live in an area with some of the best turquoise jewelers in the world among THE best turquoise jewelers in the world (Mesilla New Mexico) and I can't tell you how hard it is to get anyone to really educate in an easy one to one way like this. I don't know that I've seen tutorial videos for ANYTHING this detailed and practical, much less something often guarded by experts rather than apprenticed. Thank you so much for all these videos Steve! My wife and I take the train to Chicago every once in a while, looking forward to taking the day to buy a piece from you in person some time!

Steve, one more minor hint that may be helpful. When you slide the facet head back towards the lap try to always align the center line of the mast block with the center line of the slot in the deck. You will be surprised how much that will effect the facet alignment. This tip came from one of my old customers and it proved to be worthwhile. Randy Worden

Steve is a master cutter, and he gets deep into the work. Intense, yet sedentary workers like this should be careful, because there are some hidden health risks. Anybody working at a desk, particularly anybody doing a demanding, precision task like this one, should get up and walk around for five minutes every 30-40 minutes, and insert some brisk walks into their day.

Welp, I'm in danger lol. Thanks for the tip. I work as a teacher online and I teach class for 8 hours. I do brisk walk for 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening. I wonder if that's enough as I have back and knee problems.

Hi Sr. I have questions the laps you are using Polish and diamond disk, is connected direct to the motor axis . I mean this don't have a Pulleys and belts right . The noise I hear and sound like this motor is controlled by a variable frequency drives thank you in advance

I was pretty impressed with the Lightning Laps at first. But after trying to cut a small ruby on them and found out they wear out just as fast as they initially cut. They also seem WAY under grit rated. 600=1200, 1200=3000, 8000=16000

Quando no polimento se deparar com as facetas do topazio na posição basal, somente inverta a rotação da máquina sentido contrário que vai polir normalmente.A clivagem do topazio tem lado certo para se polir quando se trabalha sentido a clivagem, é igual pentear o cabelo do lado errado...

Most often I use 1200 steel to 600 lightning lap to polish on a batt lap with 50k diamond. Yes number sequence doesn’t make sense. Larger or harder stones I would use 600 steel to 600 lightning lap to polish. Very large gem I would start with a lap in the 300-400 range. Occasionally I pre polish with the 1200 lightning lap. I am one who tries to eliminate steps although a better prepolish is something I am looking into on some gem I have had problems with like tanzanite, fluorite, sphalerite, rhodonite.

Like the machine. Solid as a rock. The only thing that scares me is the electronics. 10 years from now is it going to be obsolete?

Steve I’ve run into problems with 50k diamond powder from Kingsley being the source of scratches. The grit may be 50k but you run into agglomerated bits that cause scratches. Tech Diamond Tools is more consistent but more expensive. The other option is to clean the powder by mixing with water and a little Jet Dry and letting the agglomerated bits fall out and decanting the clean stuff. Let it dry over night and it works. Kingsley is cheaper and it’s worth the cleaning step.

If you score your Lap that might solve the problem as the clumps will be dissolved by the uneven texture. Some Lap manufacturers dont like that though.

Hello, I have a problem and a question. I built a basic level machine. I use 120, 350, 600, 1200 and 3000 abrasive discs. I use 25000 diamond polish on aluminum disc. I can't get rid of a blurry look and parallel scratches on the facets. What should I do?

If your machine is angle stable, you can change the direction of the cutting some time, making a cross pattern of scratches. That should get a better polish.

Tagliavo pietre a mano libera il mio sogno è tagliare una pietra gigante 5000ct con faccette perfettamente in piano con lucidatura straordinaria l'epicentro della durezza di tutti i materiali della terra permette una lucidatura straordinaria, la mano umana non ha abbastanza forza per lucidare pietre grandi , però ha la sensibilità , i rodot anno la forza ma non anno la sensibilità , per ottenere il massimo della bellezza è necessario abinare le due cose una pietra con le faccette non in piano perfetto perde 80% della bellezza. magari trovo qualche persona che capisce le difficoltà del taglio delle pietre dure disposta realizzare il mio sogno devo costruire macchina dischi e sfaccettare la pietra sono disposto ad andare ovunque dormirò vicino la pietra mi sveglio vicino la pietra .
