Learn some new tips on preforming rough material for faceting a gem. Lapidary, Steve Moriarty, explains and demonstrates his techniques on how to preform a rough gem to get rid of any inclusions that are within and to finally determine the shape to cut from the rough. This way you'll find out where your culet, crown, and table should be. Ideally, preforming will get you the best yield from a piece of rough.

Wow He focused on essential steps involved in preparing a rough gemstone for cutting. The technique used is an essential step in the gemstone cutting process. The first step in preforming is to examine the rough gemstone and determine the best way to shape it. The lapidary expert shows us how to mark the rough stone to guide us in the shaping process. Next, the rough stone is placed onto the preforming machine, and a coarse grinding wheel is used to remove the excess material and shape the stone according to the marks made earlier. Thank you for sharing such a nice piece of video and happy cutting! 🥰😍😍🤩

Nice catch when the stone got out of your fingers when preforming. I wear textured, rubber finger tips when preforming. You don't get the same tactile feel of the stone but it's a far better grip. At worst, with a small stone, you burn a hole through the finger tips which is better than burning through your actual fingers or losing the stone across the room. :)

Hello Mr. Moriarty, thank you for the video, we hear about you in the gem trade and I am keen to start my journey on lapidary at some point. I have got "Gem Cutting" by Sinkankas and I am eager to begin, I think my skills on the lathe as a clockmaker will pay off and I am looking forward to develop my skills. Kind regards, Josh Walker FGA.

Hello Sir, thank you for all the amazing work you are doing, and knowledge you are giving to us. I didn't understood the type of oil you are using to look at the rough. Could you please let me know? Thanks

Wintergreen oil available on Amazon. Methylene iodide is better but expensive and slightly hazardous.

Is there an approximate measurement where you look to saw cut off the inclusions to save time vs faceting them away on a rough lap?
@Vonsen

Watching you saw off the hump was nerve wracking! With your fingers so close to the saw blade, and the piece being covered in water and held freehand I was so worried you'd slip and lose a fingertip! Have you ever had any accidents or close calls? Is there no way to grip the stone in some sort of jig so that your fingers are away from the blade?

Hello my friend good morning! I'm in Brazil and I'm looking for a used Faceting machine in good condition to buy. The price may not be too expensive, but I have some money and I can also add some rough in the negotiation. If you know of anyone who is selling a good machine please write to me, I will be very grateful. Greetings from Brazil Carlos.
