No, if you wet the hair it will clump and won't feed into the narrow teeth of the clipper. It will also lay too flat.

I got thick hair so I just go with a nr 4 with the grain and sharp up the front with my gold fx trimmer. I mostly of the time doing a drop fade with a V shape. So the fade (except from the back) is always in a straight line. It's easier to work that way. Selfcutting saves me €50 a month! I also cut my father, brother and 3 nephews. Wanna give you a compliment for this vid, because i always wondered how i could cut my hair when I want it longer. You gave me the answer!

I've been cutting my own hair for decades and would pass along a little advice to those who want to do the same. The clippers and scissors are tools so get the best ones you can. If you have beauty supply trade stores like a "Sallys", you'll find they run their professional quality products on sale regularly at far less than you'd expect. Quality stuff lasts forever. One last note, professional scissors are not like your kitchen drawer variety. These are razor sharp and grab/hold your hair in place and will easily nip off the top of your ear for those not paying attention or drunk.

@@theoneminutebarber awesome thanks. One other question, does the principle of the clipper going one grade down when de-bulking and blending work for all grades/lengths? I have really frizzy curly/wavy hair that is a lot longer than usual. You have mentioned this technique only works for certain hair types. What would be best in my situation? @theoneminutebarber

That's right. If you are cutting with the clipper it's better dry. If it's wet it clumps together and doesn't feed into the blade very easily.

Yes do both. The two down and the two up. The two up removes length. The two down removes bulk.

Probably not, I'd probably work up the way a bit further with longer grades if the blending wasn't sufficient. So 2 and a half, then three.... Maybe clipper over comb to polish it. (Someone would probably need to do that for you, clipper over comb on a self haircut would need tremendous flexibility

I'm leaning that way myself. I still have enough to do something with it but it's not what it used to be. I wouldn't worry about cutting it short to Crew cut length. There is no need to be self conscious if you have the right haircut for your hair.

What do you think of cutting the top only with clippers, there are cordless clippers on the market like Philips HC9450? Your opinion please, with such a clipper you have plenty of lengths and you can switch between lengths very fast. Maximum length of the hair can be 42mm
@theoneminutebarber
@theoneminutebarber 3 года назад
Mo ni the Phillips is a totally acceptable machine. They also make really good pro tools. And 42mm is very long indeed for a clipper guard. You might find the hair is collapsing between the distance from the scalp to the blade. Meaning going over it many times. But look, it's better than what you might be left with

I've managed to cut the side and back of my hair just fine using ur other video which were great btw, but im finding it difficult to cut the top of my hair. My hairs quite thick and long (goes down past my eye to the top of my cheek) I find it difficult to grab a section of my hair in-between my fingers, it's just way too thick.
@theoneminutebarber
@theoneminutebarber 2 года назад
This sounds like a bit of a mission. Thick hair is thick hair, the laws of physics don't apply to some heads of hair I'm afraid. I would probably be cautious and try using the with the grain method using a #5 guard 18mm. If that's not doing anything them maybe a #4 or 12mm. I wish I could see you to cut it for you as I know it won't be easy.

Just curious would you save the down the parietal ridge to remove the bulk move for after you have cut the top of your hair or does it matter if you remove the bulk that way right after doing the sides ? Also would it matter if I part my hair in the horseshoe format for this method or is it better to leave your top hair just pushed over to the side so you can see where it lies naturally in back and around the other side? Thank You
@theoneminutebarber
@theoneminutebarber 3 года назад
I think if you make a horseshoe section first you'll have problems after you release it. In other words you'll have completed the bulk removal/blend, then you'll need to blend in the sectioned hair from the horse shoe section. When it comes to what order you work in that's not really a concern. There isn't any real roadmap for cutting hair. For me its more important to have an organised method in my head and work my way through it.
@kissme4492
@kissme4492 3 года назад
@@theoneminutebarber OK that makes sense. Lets say you are working with a horseshoe part sectioned off to create an undercut...meaning you want the entire sides and back sectioned off (detached) from the top. Would you remove ALL the hair*** up to the part line or would you still leave a little section to be "de bulked" with your reverse down the sides method ? I think this is a common question with people performing undercuts. They don't know how to get rid of the line near the part. I am not doing an undercut but I though maybe some of the principals hold true in what I am doing with my hair. I definitely value this info since I actually was parting my hair in a horsehoe shape....ooops but I could possibly be swayed into an undercut >>>if I knew how to do it :) Awesome video as usual. Thanks
@theoneminutebarber
@theoneminutebarber 3 года назад
Kiss me that's a great question and really my kind of barbering. So the basic way to do an undercut is to simply cut all the hair to a uniform length right up to the disconnection line. But for me it looks far more polished and professional if it's a fade going into something like 6mm at the disconnection point. I wouldn't use the de bulking method for that type of cut. I'd decide on a clipper length for the undercut. That would be the longest area just at the disconnection point. Then fade from something much shorter into it. Skin, zero, half etc.... Into 6mm
@kissme4492

@@theoneminutebarber Probably shorter. But now I understand why most clippers do not have that many guards. 👍 Most videos do not show that technic.
@theoneminutebarber
@theoneminutebarber 3 года назад
What happens with longer guards is that the hair is so far away from the scalp that it bends and flops before the blades cuts it. So you can be going over it endlessly. Personally I don't like to go beyond the five guard, after that I cut with scissors as I have more control and make a better finish. But we are talking lockdown haircuts here.

The idea behind the lever is that it gives you an extra 1.5 mm in length when you push the bottom blade forward. Without it you have less room for adjustment. Normally with clipper guards the jump is at least 3mm between guards. The lever makes the jump only 1.5mm. For instance A non lever clipper 3mm 6mm 10mm A lever clipper 3mm 4.5mm (bottom blade forward) 6mm 7.5mm (bottom blade forward 10mm
