Cutting video files into segments without re-encoding is needed in many scenarios. I get this question a lot, how to cut a video file into segments without re-encoding and processing the video, without loss in quality or spending a lot of time exporting the video? Well, this free tool is the answer.

This tool doesn't even need installing (perhaps you need to install ffmpeg, which is also free), but after you launch it, you can open a video file in most video formats and select segments, add them to an export list and then export them with one click. The cutting and exporting of the video segments takes about a second on the file I tried. It is very fast because it does not reencode the video.
This is a great tool to quickly sort through your videos before you start work and select only the parts you want to work with.
The tool also combines videos into a single file, separates audio, video and subtitles and even works with an export list loaded from a file, to automatically cut the videos.

Excellent tool! I was able to trim a 25 gig avi file from an old Sony DV camcorder that Machete was able to edit but not save. Also, trimming using key frames worked perfectly for me.

I've been using one tool or the other for over 10 years, but I like to keep up to date on anything involving video codecs so this has been very helpful in finding something recent and easy too. Some tools out there are just insanely bloated and needlessly tedious to set up for doing something so simple.

Glad to help! You're right, simple tools are best if they get the job done. The underlying software for Losslesscut is ffmpeg though, which is a command-line video manipulation tool. Losslesscut is only the interface for accessing the functionality, but nonetheless, it's pretty useful. Thank you for your feedback.

@@Graphicious I know ffmpeg, it's what I use to animate my renders which I output to png frame by frame, but I hate the syntax logic with fury. And I truly mean it, I passionately loathe the logic behind everything ffmpeg CLI stands for, and this coming from someone who still prefers typing to clicking in Windows from his DOS days. So this front-end is a godsend.

Why keyframes? You can export the whole video as individual images if you want... then do what you want with it.

Thanks for the demo, great tool indeed. I want to split large video into segments by size, like 24MB each, how can I do that? On using this tool, how can I define the start of the Next segment at the end of the previous one? Cursor is not that accurate and frames ar lost at beginning of next segment.

The size of each segment depends on the resolution, quality and dimensions of your video. You cannot directly relate size with duration. I think you have to experiment. As far as the segments, where you make a cut, it splits the video, so no need to define a start AND an end.

Go to Edit menu > Segments > Create fixed duration segments. Choose the duration, and it will define those segments. You can then export them all.

It's greying out the buttons on me! I have a video where I want to remove about 3 mins around the middle of the video. I can't set a marker at the start of the video to start telling it to make a segment from the start to X time, it just won't set a marker at the start, WTF man?! Edit: I clicked export anyway (since I got it so the 3 mins of junk in the middle is the only part _not_ listed as a segment) and told it to export and merge the 2 segments either side of it.

Glad you figured it out in the end. Losslesscut has two modes, you can change them in the settings: one is to KEEP the segments you create, the other is to REMOVE the segments, leaving you with the rest of the video. You can toggle what happens in the settings.

Easy! Open the file in Losslesscut, then go to Edit > Segments > Create fixed duration segments. Enter the duration for a segment and Losslesscut will try to create as many equal duration segments in your video file it can. Hope this helps!

When I try to output a normal mp4 file, it says "Warning: Cutting thumbnail tracks is known to cause problems. Consider disabling track 3." It also doesn't play-back correctly, & files become corrupt. I think this programme has got a long way to go before it's useable in any way.

Well, it works fine for most. The program itself doesn't cut anything, it uses ffmpeg behind the scenes. What video format are you using? It seems it has an issue with one of the tracks. Never heard of a 'thumbnail track'

@@Graphicious Yes, I don't understand what "thumbnail track" is supposed to mean either. Sorry, I should have mentioned, I'm using mp4 files. I would simply use Quicktime Pro on my PC laptop to trim videos, then Save, which directly & losslessly outputs the edited file without needing to process it. The issue with this, however, is that Quicktime erases the thumbnail each time, meaning I'm left with my edited video files with no thumbnails. I don't get it. Oh well...

Not sure why you need the thumbnails to be embedded in the file itself. I never did that. You upload the thumbnail separately to whatever platform you're publishing your video.

MKV is just a container, the codec of the file matters too, I think. I never tried using OBS files, but maybe it would work better if you converted them to something else first?

If you want more precise cuts with Losslesscut, you need to turn off 'frame cut' in the preferences. That will cause Lossless cut to 'try' to cut as accurately as possible. But the trouble with keyframes and lack of re-encoding is that you might get a corrupted file or it might stutter when playing. Keyframes are there for a reason and Losslesscut really tries to marry the two (no re-encoding and cutting) which is not guaranteed to succeed always.

Losslesscut does not touch your original files. So if you want to remove segments from the 1-hour video, you have to load that into Losslesscut, select the segments you want to REMOVE. By default Losslesscut KEEPS those. But if you go to settings, change the preference from 'keep' to 'remove' and it will do the opposite: it will REMOVE the selected segments. Then, before you export, change the export mode from the top-right to 'Merge cuts' instead of 'Separate files'. This will cause Losslesscut to output a single video file with the segments that are not selected. Job done!

It could be. I think it does need to scan the file. That's a huge video file. But I don't think it encodes it because if it did, it would take longer than 20 minutes!

I have not used it with .ts files, but according to the documentation, it should support it - but might require converting to MP4 at the end. I don't think it can encode to .ts. Try it.

Be aware, this guy does not mention that LosslessCut is not frame accurate, doing it the way he is showing by cutting in frames between the Keyframe markers will not cut it accurately, and your exported segment might be faulty. This tool is great, but to get proper accurate cuts, you must only cut exactly on the Keyframe markers. At least this tool uses Smart Render to export, so no re-encoding needed as long as you cut only at the Keyframes.

You are right. You cannot cut a video in delta frames, only on keyframes. There is a setting in the settings to try to make more precise cuts, but I don't think that one guarantees you're going to get a precise frame-level cut unless the video is re-encoded then to create a frame there.

Unfortunately, it NEVER gets the cuts right. They are off by multiple frames, no matter if you choose keyframe cut or normal cut. It just never gets it right.

If I'm not mistaken, even if the files have the same codec, if they don't have the same properties - frame rate, resolution, color space, etc. - they won't work to just be stitched together without re-encoding. You should then change the settings to stitch the files and re-encode them. That will obviously take longer because it will require actually re-processing the files to a common frame rate, etc.

Could it be possible to reencode the file produced by Google Earth with the same properties of gopro files? If yes, then the two files are identical and I can join them without edit and export. I don't know how to reencode a file with the exact specifications of gopro... maybe it is not possible at all...

I doubt it's possible. You can try opening a GoPro file to get the specifications and then use Handbrake on the other file, with the same. Handbrake is a free encoding tool.

I don't think you can cut out 'some' audio without re-encoding, but in Losslesscut, you can remove the entire audio track.

Yes, but MKV is only a container. I opened files and it shows all the tracks inside, audio, video, subtitles, it allows you to remove, re-export, etc. Try it.

I don't know, but I would not think so. You'd have to bring the files onto the device first, and then have them assembled which would produce another file of the same size. Sounds like a lot of disk usage. Plus, Losslesscut uses ffmpeg behind the scenes. I don't know if that works on mobile devices.

I don't think so, I think sounds is encoded with the video keyframes. But I'd be curious if you tried and it worked for you. When I tried, it didn't.

If it's multi-track, you can't do it in Losslesscut. Otherwise, there's nothing preventing you from loading the file, defining segments and cutting them as described in this video.

I am not sure Losslesscut can deal with VOB, although in theory, it is a UI for ffmpeg, which CAN deal with VOB. May I suggest you try MP4Box, which is also free and, the specs say it can work with VOB. You may need to do some command-line though: www.videohelp.com/software/MP4Box

As for uninstalling, Losslesscut doesn't actually install, it just runs from where you download it, so you can just delete it. There's nothing to uninstall.

Didnt work for what I needed. I wanted to cut 3 seconds out of an hour long video and I wasnt able to cut precisely enough. You can only cut from a keyframe and not a specific millisecond

Yes, I believe it only works on keyframes. Otherwise, you'd end up with incomplete/broken frames, since a keyframe is where you have a full frame. All other frames are delta frames, so if you need to cut at millisecond precision, you'd have to re-encode the video.

Lossless cut is the first app I used, then I tried a few others, like avidemix etc, they all cut on keyframes, or if it cuts on a frame, for me it would ruin the file. The one I found to be THE best is called "smart cutter for dv and dvb," It cuts EXACTLY where you want. There is a trial version online, which adds a watermark, but you can Google a serial key for it.

It's a great program apart from one major issue. It's not accurate at all with the cuts. The videos I cut segments from have the cut location a full two or three seconds off the mark.

@@Graphicious It's a two and half hour one shot of my livestream that I also recorded directly onto my pc. To be honest, I googled key frames but I still don't totally understand what they are. Are they cuts and transitions? If that is the case then there will be none on this video as it's a one shot. I read people commenting on the lossless gitup forum that had the same issue. Why does it need keyframes for accuracy? Can't it just count the frames then cut where you say?

By 'keyframe' here, I don't refer to animation, where you animate objects between two keyframes. Rather, a keyframe in video compression is a full-frame in a video clip that contains the entire image. The 'in-between' frames, or 'delta frames' only contain information that changes from one frame to another, until the NEXT keyframe. They are essential in video compression. Anyway, what I suspected was that maybe Losslesscut has some issues with cutting video clips where there are no keyframes, but since you mentioned that other people are experiencing the same issues, then it's probably not related to keyframes. Did you try cutting the video in another application, such as Shotcut, which is also free? Maybe it works better there... although you may have to re-encode.

@@Graphicious I tried to use machette but the interface is so tiny on my 27 inch 2560 x1440 res monitor it's hard to see the icons and I couldn't really understand how to use it but will try again. Ill look for shortcut thanks.

Unfortunately, it does not work properly with the videos from my camera. Artifacts, clipping, acceleration ... Massacre.

Does your camera record in variable framerate? Maybe it's a keyframe issue or not enough keyframes. Did you try converting the videos to MP4 first, using Handbrake or something else? Remember that whatever Losslesscut is doing, is actually processed by ffmpeg. Losslesscut is just an interface for the ffmpeg.exe which is a command-line program. So whatever limitations it has, are to do with ffmpeg. You can look up online the specific camera model, the file type it creates and then try to get it converted to MP4 with keyframes. A cut can only happen where there is a keyframe.

No, it will save a NEW clip without the cuts. It leaves the original clips untouched.

You can create those segments manually and then just export them cut like that. If you need them to be done exact, to the frame, you can enable the advanced functions to allow you to use the small arrows to move back and forward, one frame at a time. Also, if you need to do this repeatedly, having the same cuts on multiple videos, you can save the project as a CSV and then when you load the new video, you load the CSV project and it will create the same segments on that one, in one click.

Yes, that should be the default. Also, make sure you don't modify anything on the video itself, like remove the audio, swap the audio or any other transformations. If you just select the segments and export, it should attempt to do it without re-encoding.

You could load each video separately in Losslesscut and extract the audio and video separately from them, then in your project just import the video part. Yeah, well, that's the basics of not having to re-encode. You have to rely on the existing keyframes. There's an option in the settings to enable a more precise cut and not force keyframe cuts, see if it works better for you if you turn that on.

It IS free, just make sure you download from the correct site: mifi.github.io/lossless-cut/ -- link in the description also. When you get there, there are some app store icons, so you can download it there, where it might not be free, but right below them, it says: "If you want to download the executables yourself, they will be free..." and the links are below. I suppose the creator HAS to make some money and tries to put the app stores in front, but keeps the free version free, you just have to find it. :)

My video file is 8GB (2hours captured from my camcorder with OBS) and I cut in 2 equal files to burn them on 2 DVDs. The first file starts immediately with VLC, but the second file starts after 5-6 seconds in VLC. Why? Is there a way to fix that? Thank you

It must be that it cuts somewhere where there's no keyframe. I believe the newest version now shows keyframes on the timeline and lets you zoom in. You can try to make your cut near a keyframe.
