I have a question Amanda: When I place the pattern piece for the sides on the two 6" cut pieces the pattern piece seems to be around a quarter inch too long for some reason...This happen yesterday when I made one so I just aligned the top part with the curves along the edge instead of the bottom...Should this fabric piece be cut a little longer so this matches the pattern piece? Should the 13 x 12 piece be adjusted to 13 1/4" x 12"? also when I cut the 3 - 5" pieces from the 8 x 15" piece my last piece is also a bit shorter on the side and is not quite 5" for some reason...I know I'm measuring correctly as I've been making bags for a long time, so any help is appreciated...Thank you!
@SewBestie
@SewBestie Год назад
You can adjust the pattern to 13.25 if your printed is slightly different - as long as you're measuring/lining up the curved from the top of the pattern, you will be fine. For the 15inch wide piece, cutting it down to 5" wide pieces, you have to make sure you're lining up the edge of your fabric to the inside of your ruler lines - otherwise, your lines will be *slightly* longer than the intended 5" wide. Hope that helps some! If not, let me know and I'll try to get a quick video done to explain!!

First, let me say how much I appreciate you sharing your talent. Sencondly - Help! After printing the pattern, checking the scale box is accurate and perfectly matching up the triangles to be diamonds, my measurements for the height (after adding 2 inches to the bottom) is 13.5. inches. The directions are to cut the fabric to 13 inches. I've already cut the WPC lining to the pattern, what can I do to make this work? Do I need to add 1/2 inch to the side pieces? What about the middle piece? Not sure how to make this work...After searching the comments I see that others have had this problem as well. Can you post what the fix is, please?
@SewBestie
@SewBestie Год назад
Simple! Just line up the top of you pattern piece when trimming away the excess. It seems to be hit or miss with different printers, but overall, it's minuscule difference when compensating on the bottom of the bag. Trim your pieces by lining up at the top of the pattern piece, then follow the rest of the directions

I had the same slight discrepancy with an extra quarter inch for the height of my pattern piece (my reference square also matched up to 1”)

Hello and thank you for this tutorial. I have not started the cutting yet but have read many comments about the measurements not adding up. I noticed on the video that you are only using the Main Body Lining Piece for cutting out the pattern. This is what you add the 2 inches to. Could this be the problem for some, they may be using the Main Body Exterior piece? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. I look foward to trying this out. Thanks so much again.

Amanda - I'm SO Glad I came across your H2O hack...!!! Love this slip/zip pocket hack. Can I ask...why seam allowances were not added since you now added 2 new seams. Maybe it's being added with the pieces you're inserting..? Just wondering if these new seams affect the opening of the H2O? In my original I use a 32oz. water bottle and it's already snug. Thank you for this video and I look forward to your response.
@SewBestie
@SewBestie Год назад
Hi Leo! Seam allowances were added for each seam that was additional to the original pattern. If you take the 3 pieces that make up the exterior panel and lay them next to each other, you'll see that, together, they are wider than the WPC :) Also, if using the square bottom hack, you could add 1/2" to an inch to BOTH the lining and exterior pieces' width to make your overall bag a bit wider!

I must have done something wrong. I printed pattern. Added two inches to the bottom. I cut the 13x12, but My pattern is coming up 1/2 inch taller when I place pattern on top of fabric after I had cut it in half. I have checked over and over to make sure I placed pattern together correctly. I can not figure out what is wrong. The pattern is 13 1/2 inches tall not 13. Can you figure out what I have done wrong. The only thing I can figure is if I match the triangles on top of each other I will get the 13”. If I stack the triangles to make diamonds the way you show, then the pattern is 1/2 inch to tall Any ideas..🤔

So I have a question, this pattern is super super cool. And it is great for those water bottles that don't have the handles on them like the ever so popular Stanley cup ones that people are just going gaga over. So I recently bought a Stanley knock off from Hobby Lobby that in my opinion is WAY better than the Stanley and MUCH MUCH cheaper! I'd love to figure out if there is a way to hack this pattern to accommodate that handle! I have seen bags that are for sale that are for these cups but I wanna make my own. It can't be THAT hard to do but wondered if you all thought the same and would consider doing a hack to accommodate that wonderful Stanley-like cup. :-).
@mishkalarsoncreations
@mishkalarsoncreations Месяц назад
I would think adding the amount the handle takes up (probably 2 inches?) to the sides overall should do then trick, the adjust the bottom as well. Just grab some scrap fabric and play around. That’s how my grandma taught me - then we would create a new pattern from it.

Omg this is making my brain hurt! So before I started, I checked my inch boxes to make sure the pattern pieces are the correct size. Then I added my 2” to the bottom and cut out all my fabric pieces. BUT... when I went to cut the curves from my main body side pieces, the pattern pieces are in fact 1/4” too big! How is this possible and what do I do now? I’ve already cut my fabric exactly to the tutorial and cannot afford to waste the material!! Can I cut off the 1/4” or is that going to totally ruin the shape, 😖😖😖 I’m so annoyed. I’ve made bags before but never had so much hassle and things go wrong with this one! The original oval bottom is impossible on a domestic machine despite being told it can handle it. Funnily enough the tutorial doesn’t show how they get the oval base under the machine at the start! I wasted so much time and material and eventually had to do a boxed bottom. Still not happy with the finished bag as particularly wanted the curved pocket. The bag was for my daughters 30th and I wanted it to be perfect which it was not. As I’ve just started a dog walking business I thought I’d make myself a dog walking bag with the front pocket and boxed bottom hacks and now that doesn’t even work. And I paid for this pattern!! 😡

I'm so sorry you're having so much trouble!! A couple things: I did answer your question in the Facebook group (sorry, I just saw this message as we've been in Florida during hurricane Ian) - you can line up the top of the pattern piece to the squares and cut it from there! Trust me, it will be fine 🥰 Next, did you see I also have a tutorial for the original pattern as well? I try my best to explain every step, especially for beginners! I have actually taught this bag in classes (in person) to groups of up to 40 in a workshop, all on domestic machines. There are definitely some tricks to learn in person if you can ever make it to one of these workshops. It can definitely take some patience, especially the first few times. But please, feel free to tag me in the fb group if you still need help!

Oh god, I hope you are ok! Yes, thank you I saw yr fb response. No I haven’t seen your tutorial for the original bag. I did try over and over but just couldn’t not do the oval bottom. I tried about 5 times. Every other part of the bag went smoothly. I tried all sorts of tricks, hand stitching, staples, tape, clips, pins…nothing worked. I also did the less bulk hack but it wasn’t the bottom that was the issue. It was the side seems of the curved pocket which made it impossible to follow the shape of the oval or stop everything from shifting :( but I will still check out your tutorial. Thanks again and hope you are safe.

Your tutorial is great, however, ditch the background music. I have to wear headphones and it’s so distracting, hard to hear you talk.

Hi there! If you read the description in this video, you'll see there is a link to the same exact video that has no music. Happy sewing!

@@SewBestie I forgot to mention I’ve made 8 of the H20’s for my family as gifts. They worked perfect for the Fair. 🤗

Would it harm anything to add fleece lining to the back of the waterproof lining, for insulation? Maybe with double-sided tape? Or thicker fusable lining on the main pieces? My daughter specifically asked for an *insulated* bottle bag.

It wouldn't harm anything, but for insulation I would look at the same kind of batting that they use for pot holders! Otherwise, I don't think fleece by itself or even fusible fleece would do that much for insulation 💙

I made one today!! Thanks for the detailed tutorial!! My pocket ended up being 4 inches wide. How would you increase the pocket width?? My phone barely fits 🫣

You could use a 1/4" seam allowance instead of 3/8" SA when attaching the front center to each side.. OR you can make the center panel a little wider, just make sure you adjust the side panels so the finished piece fits to the lining 🥰
