this is a DAMN detailed video on dismantling of bb bearing for servicing...every of the video angle are well documented and his servicing skillset is marvelous👍
Agree. Reinstalling a bearing that has been pressed out isn’t a good idea. Also, a full contact sealed bearing is suitable for this application because the old bearing operated in dirty and wet conditions. While on the subject of bad ideas… Never, ever, spin a dry bearing. Especially with compressed air because the rotational speeds can be very high. Zero lubrication means metal-on-metal contact. When un lubricated, cages can score bearings and races. Most bearing manufacturers specify a 1/3 fill of grease. Anything more than that will add drag and squeeze out past the seals during use… and attract dirt.
And probably a new bearing of a higher quality. Standard they're mostly of a mediocre quality. Bearings that are in a shape like this one, most of the time are having to much slack after cleaning. And that is costing efficiency too. And then there are the bearings in the pedals too. Most of the time they can't be serviced at all.
Great to see something being restored rather than thrown away and replaced (as seems the norm in this era before we’re finally forced to look after our planet). Would have loved to see/hear the cranks spinning on the bike before/after.
I only throw away broken ones... if it can be salvaged. Will do that first but will hv a new one on the ready. The old one can be used on another old bike that u can give away in working condition.🎉
Geez Man! You're an artist! Your videos are amazing! And it's a very good approach to sustainability, not to immediately buy new and throw away the old, but to save, renovate and repair what we can. Of course I share.🤘
Impressive video production! One day maybe, when I am retired with a proper workshop. I have built a few home-made bearing presses and it is an absolute headache to find the right parts (let alone for the extraction process which always requires specific dedicated parts).
@@GoodBicycle Soul and skill, all those comments for cheaper to buy can't fix a broken chain without master link on their never flat carbon wheelsets... In fact, freshly packed BB is a must-to-do on a brand new rig, don't have to believe me just take it apart and find yourself Why? little recommendation at your procedure, at the very last step with the external protective coat try to spray some dry silicone instead of grease - it should last till next interval with the added benefit of no dust collecting. Cheers
You'd be surprised at inadequate level of grease in brand new bearings on suspension pivots and bottom brackets. I think it's good practice to always at least disassemble to check the grease for new bearings.
Very nice video - just what I was looking for. It might be cheaper to buy a new BB than to pay for full servicing but it sure is fun to do it yourself and feel satisfied with your work on your own bike.
Not necessary to release the bearing outside. Just remove one rubber. Put all the area in a fluid to clean. Shake it to release the dirt. Dry it and lubricate it. Easy! Alternative buy 2 new bearing for 3-4 dollars and change.
Bearings with rust do always have small damage, dents, and play. New ones are widely available. But if you have an old bike, you could do this. I would not recommend.
To all the people who say just replace bearings i live in NZ cant get bearings alone have to replace whole crank set $1200 i think ill clean mine out !
Wow I didin't even know you could take these things apart! Nice trick at 3.15 using crankset! I haven't got any of the other tools to do the job though.

Let's just say that if the bearing is dirty, it is definitely already worn.) In fact, it should be replaced with a new one. but the theme of the video is that the bearing can still work for a while if it is well maintained).
9:30 Greasing your bearings. An effective but messier method to ensure you get grease to all parts of your bearing is to put some grease on the edge of your non dominant palm. About the mid point between your small finger and the heel of your hand opposite your thumb. Then using your dominant hand, lay the ball bearing part of the bearing on the grease and then press down and drag the bearing towards you, using both the pressing down and dragging of the bearing, while also pressing back with the edge of your non dominant palm, to press the grease into the bearing. Then rotate the bearing slightly and repeat till you've done the whole bearing and you can see grease coming out of all parts of the bearing on the side facing you. Repeat for the other side of the bearing and you should have grease applied to all parts of the bearing that need grease. Replenish the grease as required during all stages of the above process.
Nice.... the fact that they can be dismantled means they can be repaired and reused. I do repairs but will hv a new one on hand in case the repaired doesn't last. 🎉
If the bearing is pressed out only by the inner ring, it is destroyed. Then it makes no sense to clean and lubricate it, it is better to put a new one. As you can see in the video, the new one is pressed behind the outer ring and that's right.
At least metal parts (bearings) as they are 100% recyclable, should be replaced. Ones refurbished are still rusted. If you can hear them spinning, they are no good.
Appreciate the process and i felt ita therapeutic in someway. Would love to do this on my bike with the proper tolols.. I wish to know what is the tool called for removing the bearing or a similar product link?

Very nice and detailed video ! I love the camera ! I open the BB to clean it and i found that is pressHand (it comes off with the chainrings) ! Its a new type? Lol i dont need that BB tools anymore :D
Or you can replace that sealed cartridge that comes with new bearings for only $20. One side is L.H. thread, other is R.H. thread, that state "Do Not Disassemble".
Those bottom brackets are not intended to be serviced, they are intended to be replaced. As others have noted, it isn't worth the labor to service them, and replacements are cheap.
@@flexxx222Exactly, that would be the best compromise between throwing everything in the bin and reusing an old bearing which probably won't last long especially after pushing it out via the inner ring (as it will likely damage the bearing)
@@GoodBicycle: Marine grease, being used on boats and boat trailers, is better. The reason why is because marine grease repels water, which cuts down on corrosion.
Basically an informative video, but i wouldn`t recommend removing a bearing by applying pressure to the inner ring (at least if your intention is to reuse the bearing), cause this loads the balls of the bearing in a way the bearing is not designed for. Always remove a bearing by applying pressure to the outer ring that attaches to the fit of the bearing
Threaded bottom brackets like this are often so inexpensive that it is better to replace the entire bottom bracket than attempting to clean the bearings.
How stupid ! The bearings that were removed, cleaned & re-greased are known as *SEALED* bearings. We saw this seal being removed & also cleaned & refitted. The stupid part is that it was clear that the seals had failed as evidence by the dirt inside the bearings, so what will happen in a very short space of time is these cleaned & re-greased bearings will ingest dirt & water again & we are back to square one. NeXT time, just replace the bearings for a long term repair.
