I LOVE all the processing videos you guys have been doing. Not to steer anyone away from Randy’s channel, but another awesome resource I came across a while back is the Scott Rea Project here on RU-vid. He’s a butcher by trade, and does tons of wild game. If you’re ever lucky enough to get an elk or deer out whole, his channel will give you some awesome ideas on how to process cuts bone-in, which really opens up wild game to a ton of culinary options. PS- Osso Buco is incredible!
I did this on a whitetail last year. I had a long steep climb out and this method saved me a ton of grief. I turned a whole 2.5 year old doe into 50 LBS of meat. Even for us Eastern guys, this is a nice method to save your back. Great videos as always.
It is useful for deer, for sure. We use it for deer. I did find out that some eastern states require the animal to come out whole and this would be illegal. Crazy.
I'd be interested to know if anybody has ever weighed the bones from elk, deer, etc to see the actual weight saved by using this process. I would think numbers would make some converts. I was never taught how to do any of this so I am enjoying the learning process.
Hey Randy, what size of the Caribou Game bags do you use for taking out a single bull elk...and what type of trekking poles do you use. Looking to get some off the GoHunt gear shop with my points. Thanks for all you do, awesome job. Im a few videos away from watching every youtube of yours haha. Thanks from up here in Canada
In the Caribou Game bags, they have a line called the "High Country Series." For backpack hunting, I use the "Wapiti" set from that line. If not backpack hunting, I use the "Elk magnum" pack. Good luck. As for trekking poles, I use Leki Corklight.
One tip about your game bags. Don't use to much bleach when you clean them or they'll tear next time out. Not a good thing to happen in the field. Learned the hard way.
John, I just received my caribou game bags; I have read the instructions. Can I use vinegar to sanitize without compromising the integrity of the bags? Thoughts?
Cut the blood clot/blood shot meat from the good stuff and leave it there for scavengers. Besides being damaged, it also is more likely to have bone chips or bullet fragments.
Randy Newberg, Hunter use the go pro when you are filming the field dressing portion only that way the viewers can see exactly how and where to make cuts.
Agreed I used a similar disposable blade knife when they first came out it took me less than one animal to resort back to a real knife. To be honest watching him piss around with such a small knife actually annoyed me enough to ruin this video.
Its a havalon. Rather than re sharpening multiple times during break down, as soon as blade starts to dull, slap on a new one. They have great blade retention and are inexpensive. A must have!!!
What we are using in this video is a Gerber Vital. The blade change mechanism on the Gerber is very easy and no worries of cutting your fingers when replacing the blade.
Oops, sorry, I saw the orange sliver on my phone and assumed it to be a Havalon. Forgot Gerber IS a sponsor. I hope to one day to be able to upgrade from my Havalon Barracuda to a Gerber Vital
