Thanks for putting this up Corey. This is so much better than listening to someone describe how they e-scout. Is this really all you do before heading in though, or is this an abbreviated version of your e-scouting? For example, with bedding, do you also look at the topo for benches on those north facing slopes? Do you notice bulls bedding on the top 1/3 of the slope like whitetail? Do you notice bedding locations are wind direction specific? Also, how do you decide what elevation to start at?

The first time I hunted OTC Archery for Elk was in 2006. We didn't have resources like this back then. We leave to go again in 6 days, I feel so much more prepared than I was 13 years ago when we went. We never did find the Elk, we wander around without hearing a bugle and no fresh sign and came home empty handed having just enjoyed a fall Mountain vacation. NOT THIS YEAR! Also, UEH is worth every penny!

I've been doing this with Google Earth to hunt WT for years. I still don't know what I'm doing looking for Elk though. Wondering what the reasoning is for the north facing sites? What motivates elk to the north face? And sadly, the OnX maps are unavailable in Canada.

I have to go about locating elk in a totally different way. The area I hunt in Colorado is mostly private land so access is limited. The elk in this area have a rotation they travel. For instance in 2019 I was hunting up high and the elk would travel through the property I could hunt about once a week. They would spend probably 24 hours there and then move on. The same happens in the lower country where I also hunt. When I was young there were very few elk in this area but now there are quite a few. These elk grew up here and almost anywhere I go in this hunting area I am able to hear the highway and the railroad so the elk can also. The elk are not afraid of a vehicle but if it stops they leave. Not in a rush but they don't hang around. This is probably going to all change though because in 2018 there was a large forest fire that burnt a lot of the public land and after the fire rains washed out access to those public lands. Then a high wind blew down a lot of living trees on other access roads. The forest service has never reopened any of these roads and doesn't seem to be going to. This will change the pattern of rotation of the elk.

What if you have never hunted elk before? Such as myself. We hunt deer, Turkey, and pigs here and SC, and I know what they feed on and how they travel the terrain. We are planning our first ever elk hunt the beginning of September in Colorado. What do I need to look for? We will be happy with any legal elk, but do not have a clue what they eat, and where they bed. Why do they chose a north facing slope? Seems like water is very important in early September since they are such big animals? Any input would be appreciated! Thank you for all of your videos. I have watched about all of them, and they are very informative.

Is northwest facing or northeast facing better for bedding? Northeast, because it faces away from the heat of the afternoon?
@russellkeeling4387

And the timber is usually larger and more dense on the north facing slope because snow lays longer and irrigates it better.

@sav300

Scott Vasey in the last few years I have gotten into more elk in their beds within 1/4 mile of a road than I have going in 3-5 miles. So in my experience yes. Personally helped pack out a few killed less than that from a main road. Road hunters drive by and the rest just hike right past on a mission to get in deep. The elk know it !
