I don’t cut mine that low. When I cut them like that they don’t rebloom it even bloom the following year. I take my time and carefully deadhead the stems individually. It’s so therapeutic!

Hi Tracy, I like your cutting shears. Where did you buy them and what brand? Thanks for sharing your garden skills❤

I got the Felco at Lee Valley. They have many different shears and you can try them out before buying. Sheridan also has a few in store as well. 💚

So jealous of your crystal blue salvia. I live in the Toronto area but haven’t been able to find it at all.

Crystal Blue salvia is no longer available for sale. If you are in the GTA, many garden nurseries carry Perfect Profusion salvia….which is very similar to Crystal Blue. Hope you find it to plant in your garden. 💚

Great tutorial on the salvia Tracy. When you cut them all the way to the ground how will they bloom as compared to cutting them back partially to where the new blooms were coming out. Ive only cut mine partially but wonder if I can get a bigger flush of blooms the 2nd time around by cutting them all the way back. Thank you so much

Depending on the variety - some do rebloom better than others but I always get a better rebloom but cutting them all the way back. Hope you give it a try and compare.

Beautiful garden Tracy! Perfect timing for this video. I have five salvia plants probably in third or fourth year that completely flopped in the last strong rain storm. I suspect that I should have divided them in early spring. Do you think it would be safe to cut them completely back down and divide at this point? Or should I just cut down completely and divide in the fall or spring next year? I have five plants lining a border in my side garden.
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden Год назад
Thank you Teresa! 💚 I would wait until fall to divide them. I sometimes divide them now - but only if you have a few days of cooler rainy weather in the forecast. Dividing them in the heat wave may require you to baby them, etc…and risking their chance of not surviving.

Hi, how long does it take for the salvia to rebloom?
@samantharitchie9148

Tracy, is this the same for Cats Pajama's?
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden Год назад
Yes, you can cut back the Cat’s PJ nepeta all the way back and it will flush out and bloom. 💚

I just deadheaded the salvia on Monday. I didn’t go to the ground. I’m just down the road from you, in Kingston. I wonder if I should cut mine all the way back. My plant is in its second year.
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden Год назад
The way you did will be okay as you will be getting a few blooms here or there. Pruning it all the way encourages the plants to be fuller. But no worries, let it grow and see you like it or not. If you don’t, next year you can prune it all the way back. 💚

@@TracysHomeGarden yes true…I’m fairly new to gardening, and a couple years ago I planted a ton of perennials and the majority of them died over the winter so I’m probably a little more cautious than most. Things are getting a little overgrown but moving things and pruning things was how I killed them last time to I’m hesitant to do that too.

Here I have been cutting the individual stalks throughout the entire plant which is very time consuming...thinking if I cut too far the salvia wouldn't rebloom. I didn't get to cut back two of mine because it has either been raining or it has been too hot and now they have gone to seed. I thought it might be too late. I will try this and see what happens. They look so ugly at the moment. Thanks
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden Год назад
I personally think it’s best (and easier) to just to give it a good pruning all the way to the base of each plant. It’s not too late…🤩

@@TracysHomeGarden After watching your video I went out and got it done Thanks! It was so much easier than searching for the buds and clipping. This plant is quite old and has many "branches. Hope it reblooms this season. If not, at least my garden looks tidier... after I weeded what I found it had been hiding 😉.

They are Banana Cream daisies. I got the Original version but the have the version II which is supposed to be better with reblooming than then original.

@@TracysHomeGarden Thanks. They are beautiful. Do they spread or stay in a clump? I had trouble with daisies invading my entire garden and had to remove all of them. I would like it if thy didn't spread like crazy.

@@TracysHomeGarden I just googled them. I see MANY reviews that say they didn't survive a winter. Is this your first season or have you gone through the winter with them? If they survived a winter is there anything particular you did to prepare them in the autumn?

Thanks for your advice about not fertilizing salvias. I’ll have to try and remember that next time I fertilize my garden. 🪴💚
