My name is Tracy and I garden (indoors and outdoors) in zone 6a Canada (equivalent to US zone 5a), bake and cook at my home in Toronto, Canada.

I used regular “potting mix” for all potted plants. I also added 1-2” of compost on top to act as “mulch” and help retain water loss.

Have you tried propagating the banana cream dasies (I might have the name wrong)? If you aren't sure about ripping them out and you want to try them in other places try propagating them. It makes it way less stressful to have a backup plant when you are thinking about moving them.

That’s a great idea! I was thinking about transplanting one of the patches of the Banana Cream daisies at my brother’s house. This will give me some space to plant the new variety to compare. However, I went to a garden nursery this past week and they were sold out. I will keep looking. Thank you again! 🙏

I’m looking to get either the endless summer bloomstruck or the original. I love the color of the original but heard the bloomstruck doesn’t flop as much as the original. Which one would you recommend? Thank you in advance.

Do you fertilize, if so what do you use and how often pls?

I don’t fertilize but you can use a rosé slow release fertilizer or a general 10-10-10 for perennials in spring.

Tracy, my Little Quick Fires have not bloomed at all, I don't even see buds but they have grown beautifully in size. I'm also in zone 5 and planted them last year. Do you have any idea why this could have happened? I was looking forward to the beautiful lace cap blooms.

If they grow and are looking healthy then I think they may have been over fertilized. Hydrangeas are not heavy feeders and a small amount of slow release fertilizer like a rose food or handful of compost or so it’s all they need. Too much fertilizer will cause the plant to grow foliage and not blooms. If you stop the fertilizing, you may still get blooms later. Depending how much fertilizers you gave them, they may flower for you next year. Hope they will bloom later for you. 🤞🤞🤞

I just use compost on my hydrangeas. If you have to fertilize, you can use a slow release rose fertilizer or a general type like 10-10-10 for perennials, or a specific type for acid loving plants. You can also check with your local garden nursery for more recommendations.

Do you overwinter the Dwarf Alberta spruce that you have in containers? If so, do you water them in the winter? Is there anything else you do to protect them?

They stay outside on the steps all winter long without extra winter protection. During the winter I give each plants about a snowball size of snow (if it’s not covered in snow already.)

You can plant any panicle hydrangeas in full sun. Check with a local garden centre for varieties you can get in your area. Happy gardening!

It’s ok to see yellow leaves dropping at the time when hydrangeas are blooming. This is a sign the plant is unable to support the foliage and blooms. In order to keep the blooms, it sacrificed some foliage. This usually happens to young plants or old larger plants. My 5-6 years old Limelight trees are starting to do this as well.

Tracy, your garden is amazing. I saw you put some of your plants in the containers. Just wondering how do you take care of them in the winter? Do you put them in the garage or do you use the cover for cold protection?

Thank you! All the hydrangea pots stay outside. I move all of them right up against my southwest wall. I do take the geraniums and begonia pots inside and place them under lights or sunny winter all winter and I take them out in late May.

I got them as gifts many years ago (20+ years ago). You can find them or something similar at local garden nurseries. If you are in the GTA, you can check for them at Valleyview, Cannon, Vandermeer, etc. Hope you can find some to plant.

Everything looks beautiful as usual, Tracy. I ended up getting 3 Pinky Winkys this year from PW when they had a sale, and then a gal that has a private nursery has the most amazing plants, and I got 2 vanilla strawberry standards from her. They were only $90 a piece and are at least 5 years old already. So thats 5 more to my 20 panilcles I got last summer. Finally got them all planted in the ground and some in pots. They are all thriving except for 2. One of my Quickfire is getting some brown and crispy leaves on it. I hope its not getting too much sun where its at. Between the fence and the brick house it might be attracting too much heat. A few others have leaves that are turning yellow and falling off. Any ideas? 😢 Besides that everything is looking beautiful. I plantrd alot of sedum autumn joys that I've had for years around them. I love Echinacea so I have lots of color around them as well. Your going to have to do another demo video when you decide to turn that quickfire fab into a standard. I want to turn about half of these I got into standards but I'm terrified im going to batch it. 😂 Thank you for sharing.🤗

Thank you! 🙏 All the hydrangea in pots stay outside. I place them right up against the southwest wall of the house from late fall to late winter. I usually move them to a sunny spot when the snow start to melt.

All hydrangeas have seeds and you can collect them from the flower heads in the fall. Not the seeds are viable so collect more to make sure you get some viable seed pods.

Your panicle hydrangea that you grew from seed, that had it's leaf edges eaten, may have been being eaten by "leaf-cutter bees". Except, they live in "the ground"...so, don't know if that's likely. The edge-eating is a sure sign of leaf-cutter activity.

Thank you for your help. I went out the last couple of nights and found no visible signs of insects actively feeding on the hydrangea foliage. I will continue to look because I'm very curious to know what has been feeding on them.

I checked the PW site and you are right about the updated size of the FL being up to 8”. Originally, the tag had 4-5 ft wide and 5-6 ft tall (however, I need to pull out my old tag to confirm) when I bought it back in 2010. I planted my 1st FL at my previous home back in 2010….and it is now in its 13th year. A couple years a ago, the new owner said it was still under 5 ft. However, the FL I have in this garden are in full sun and not shaded like the one at my old house (planted under the canopy of a 100+ year old maple tree). PW is pretty good about their plants so if they changed it on their website then it may end up growing to be that size or larger. Thanks for letting me know because the next time I visit the nursery, I will also check to see if they updated their tags here to match what’s on their website. And if FL plants will be 8+ ft then I will have to do some very drastic changes. 😮 Thanks 🙏 for letting me know!

Interesting…, that’s one reason I never purchased that one. I really like the coloring and bloom timing, but don’t have the room for that size. Wondering if it use to only get the size you mentioned, but has been bred to get bigger now or in your zone it won’t reach that large.

Absolutely Gorgeous! We cannot get the color or the performance you can with pannicle hydrangeas you can acheive downer here in the the midsouth of MS.. I am going to install drip tape to my full sun planted Little Quick Fire hedge this spring to see if that helps. The Endless Summer dow erll in morning sun here. I must need to step up my Compost application like you do! I also want to try the tall lillies. They must look amazing in full bloom. What colors do you have. Thanks for sharing!

The place the pots unprotected and right up against the southwest wall of our house. It’s gets some protection from the cold & dry winter winds. The pots also get a lot of snow coverage for a little bit of cold insulation. 💚

I water 1-2 time a week…but I water the plants deep and slow at the roots.

The one hydrangea you are calling a Flare, might be a Candelabra hydrangea, both Bloom’n Easy plants. The plant might have been labelled wrong. I purchased 6 Flare and mine are small, approx 3 feet.

move your twist and shout into a container rather than giving it away. I had a big leaf hydrangea not blooming for few year but just getting big. I thought I'll take it out. this year it is blooming With big beautiful flowers :)

You can get them from the panicles in your garden. They are best to harvest in mid-late fall. Don’t forget to harvest extra as many pods may contain unviable seeds.

Hi, it looks like you plant a lot in the container, do you need to protect t them for the winter? I am gardening in Chicago area which is US 6A, I wonder if I can also plant hydrangeas in planters like you did.

In US zone 6, they should be okay outside all winter long. I recommend starting out with panicle hydrangeas in 4-5 gal pots. If you want extra protection from colder winters, move the pots right up against a south or west facing wall of the house for some extra radiant heat from the home. If you have a front porch like mine, move them in there and they will be just fine. Just make sure to give them some water before the first freeze. Once the soil freezes, you don’t have to water again until the leaf buds start showing. All the best.

I think the little hydrenga is being eaten by vine weaviel. Try and catch them at night using a torch. I love your pretty gardens. I love the pruella.

Vine Weevil? Thank you! I think you may be right as I have seen them on my hydrangeas at night. I tried looking for them at night and found a few of them. They tend to like feeding on the Quick Fire Fab, Little Lime, Little Lime Punch and my hydyrangea seedlings. I'm not sure why but they don't eat the foliage on my Bobo and original Quick Fire. I wonder why.

I planted allisum from seed yrs ago and it thrives in the winter it doesn't like the heat of summer but comes back very well when the weather cools off.

I enjoyed seeing all of your lovely gardens. You seem partial to hydragnea's and I can see why, lots of large and colorful blooms that are beautiful. Your pulu clematis has really taken off and has so many blooms everywhere! Your dwarf spruce trees are growing well in pots! My battery is running low, so thanks for sharing!

Tracy, your garden is beautiful, thank you for this tour ! What is your secret with the lobelia ? Mine died in this heat. Kept them watered and even protected them from harsh afternoon sun with shade cloth. I live in Etobicoke, so same zone as you.

I added 1” of compost on top of the plant to help retain water loss. I find that lobelia don’t like to get too dried or too wet. You should also check the soil and only water if the soils is completely dried. I find that I haven’t had to water 💧 as often lately as we have been lucky to get rain every other day. Hope your lobelia do better.

I’m fascinated at how you propagate so many hydrangeas and even turn them into tree forms. Have you ever propagated the serrata hydrangeas-. mountain type? Those are my favourites, especially tiny tuff stuff. What do you for chlorosis and Japanese beetles? I don’t even have roses but they are all over and my tree peonies and some hydrangeas are looking chlorotic. I love your clematis trellises. Where did you get them? They’re perfect!

I'm actually getting some chlorosis on my hydrangeas as well. I tested the soil in the back garden last year and it was just above pH 7. I added a little bit of sulfur and coffee grounds to help bring it down to pH 6.9-7.0. I haven't tested the soil this year yet but I do find that the plants in the back garden is much better. This year the plants in the front look chlorotic too and I think it could be due to some winter salt that was applied to our front steps during the winter. This fall I will apply some sulfur so hopefully the plants there will do better next year. For the Japanese beetles, you can apply the beneficial nematode twice a year to reduce any grubs or larvae in garden soil and grass. Compared to other years, I have less of them this year.

This is the first time I’ve seen one of your videos, Miss Tracy. What USDA planting zone are you in? Nice info for you to tell us the names of all your plants, and also the bloom sequence. Bloom sequence is something I have trouble with here in my southern zone nine Garden. I have a lot of blooms and a productive small veg, garden November to maybe mid June. Not many plants in bloom August, September, and October. 😢 I would like to try to learn plant varieties so that I could have a little bit nicer Garden in the soggy humid dog days of summer

I got a ton of hydrangeas growing from seeds for the past 3 years and I didn’t know what it was so I plugged them out it was possible hundreds of them. Wish I knew. Now that I see your video I’m going to try and grow them from seeds besides propagation. It’s going to be fun 😊
