“Less emotion, more devotion.” Love it!

Except - sometimes, people are forced to go outside their inner comfort zone, self improvement & interests to stand up for the values they see as important in society. If Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela or Ghandi had opted for ‘more devotion’ - would they have still had the same positive impact on society?

Cognitive Dissonance "In the field of psychology, cognitive dissonance occurs when a person holds contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values, and is typically experienced as psychological stress when they participate in an action that goes against one or more of them."- Wikipedia This is how people who eat meat dairy and eggs can still think of themselves as "animal lovers" even after they learn the facts. Their actions don't match their values.
@espenandersen3138
@espenandersen3138 3 года назад
Not the highest on the cognitive consonance scale, but I see your point. A meat eater can be an animal lover and a vegan can be an animal hater. Love the quote “Less emotion, more devotion.” Think about it for a minute :)

I know alot of animal lovers, vegan or not. My point was cognitive consonance, its ironic that its so low in this thread since its video its under is about just that.

@@espenandersen3138 A vegan can be an animal hater, but still believe it is wrong to kill them for taste pleasure and convenience. I can intensely dislike a certain person, but still support their right to free speech for example. Or be against cannibalism in regards to that person.

Mindfulness as Rich suggests is an effort to close/balance the emotional gate after the horse has already bolted. Disequilibrium currently begins ubiquitously in infancy. Mindfulness has to also or we will never not suffer cognitive dissonance.

This isn't cognitive dissonance. CD is when one person, internally, has conflicting values, beliefs, etc. When two separate people have conflicting values, beliefs, etc. its called disagreement.

Rich thank you for today’s podcast on cognitive dissonance. While I think you make some valid points to help explain why we are fragmented and see the same event in polar opposite ways, I would ask you to consider what I believe is the dumbing down of America. Critical analysis and drawing logical conclusions based on objective data points is declining. Common sense is not common. Further while I’d like to keep trump and politics out of the discussion, I believe trump has in a large measure incited two people to see the same event completely differently. Rich, please keep the conversation going.

I am in Love with this man. I see Rich, out of all the social media influencers, having a gift that is authentic and relatable. His delivery is filled with such heart and passion. You can't help but to love this man. The rawness of how he portrays his journey, specifically showing vulnerability, has touched my Life in a way that I could have never conceived. I would love to be amongst like-minded people. It would be an amazing experience to be honored by attenting a retreat with the community of people here. There are so many other people on RU-vid, many of whom I do adore and am very grateful for but Rich is a gift to us. He has shared his journey with us , he has showed us, by example, that it's okay to be vulnerable, especially as a man. while continuing to remain humbled by his experience. I heard his wife is just as amazing. Inspired by this beautiful heartwarming story of two incredible people who obviously respect each other. The greatest lesson to us, of how we can interact, be vulnerable, respect, and care about each other, despite our differences but instead consciously choosing to focus on our similarities.. It brings tears to my eyes. The 12-step program, He speaks so highly of, I do believe in. The program, in oneway or another, relates to all of our lives. The commaraderty of a 12-step program is so beautiful. There is a true Sisterhood and Brotherhood. I know this because of my brothers journey. unfortunately he lost his battle after 20 years at the age of 34. I lost my best friend who stood by me through the daily trauma and physical abuse of our childhood. Grateful to have time with him before he passed. Having the gift of him telling me I must go on and live the Beautiful Life I was meant to live. My brother gracefully accepted his fate, the choices he made. I had a harder time accepting reality. I believe he was given the time to be with me and teach me many lessons before he was called home. I will be forever grateful for that gift. Knowing how incredible the people from the 12-step program were is the reason why I still feel at home with these people. I feel it is the only safe place where I have the ability to be vulnerable. In our society being vulnerable for any of us is not easy. I have not had that feeling of being safe since 2001. After divorcing an abuser of 20 years I have been isolated as a single mom of 4 special needs children, diagnosed with a rare bone marrow disease but do not feel sorry for myself. I just want to be free. I want to be loved and happy and have that ability to freely love others. I am happy to say I gave up a lifestyle of extreme wealth. Living in a home watching the misery of an unquenchable thirst that could never be satisfied. For me it was heartbreaking to watch and I did not want my children to be around that. There was so much more to life. I knew there was a peace and the ability to feel fulfilled. A feeling of contentment but it was not going to be achieved in that environment. The ability to love without a lifestyle of extreme wealth and material objects that did not satisfy the unquenchable desire of always wanting more The ability to feel ones emptiness and heartbreak affected me profoundly I could not Witness what fueled the desire that spiraled out of control. Life is a gift. The beauty that surrounds us on a daily basis is breath-taking. There are no words that have the ability to describe the awe and wonder of Infinite beauty that surrounds us. it is this amazing Community and amazing individuals like Rich, with the gift of having been given the ability to humbly question us, awakening our senses to the awe in all that is truly meaningful. Found in the infinite beauty of everything that has life. I am truly grateful thank you for sharing your gift, and thank you to your community of so many wonderful amazing people who have touched my life You inspire me to continue awakening by questioning, humbly, all that is living and the infinite beauty within, that is us 💝

Too many people are too comfortable with their limited ideologies and beliefs. They stick to what they know and have trouble breaking out of their own narrative. It requires challenging life experiences to break oneself out of that mold.

Public transportation helped a lot. Even a lot see who can't afford a car can get to where people are and where they need to be to help themselves. USA makes life so hard for it's citizens and then shames them for it.

Ever since we separated the word "intentional" from community we redefined the word community. Cities have become wall-less prisons that force most people to work with people they don't know, at jobs they don't want to live in places they aren't comfortable in for the promise of living a life that doesn't really exist. This system created intentional cognitive dissonance in order to make people dependent on the governments that don't want to help the public.

Intriguing… the idea that we are constructing our own avatars; but once established, we are loath to trash it and start afresh- having to work through all those levels of thinking and learning. Much easier just to tweak what we already have, even if it means having to turn it inside out. I’m not sure it’s a function of estrangement from the community. However, it probably doesn’t have something to do with no longer valuing community (and caring about other people, and being responsible for others, helping and accepting those in need or who are different or vulnerable). It’s probably the fruit of various movements that value independence and “freedom” (without responsibility or accountability or consequences)… Ayn Rand, Margaret Thatcher, George Bush, Bill Clinton, Fred & Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, William & Jacob and Rees-Mogg, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, the list is endless…

Wait, so hes defining cognitive dissonance as how 2 people look at the same event and walk away with different conclusions. I'm confused I thought cognitive dissonance was when your actions and behaviors in a situation didn't line up to your values and beliefs and so you try to make it seem like the other person was bad to continue to keep you feeling good about actions or behaviors that were bad that you did. Somebody, please help me out here.

Being disenfranchised is not a point of view or a perception issue. Income inequality in the US is the highest in the G7. When 47 families control over 50% of the wealth in the US, 1% own 50% of the Stock Market and 10% own 92% of the Stock market. In all US States, full time workers can not afford to pay their rent. Now, this month. 80% of the population have less than a months rent as savings. The pandemic has highlighted how unequal and rigged the system is against the majority of the population. people are angry, feeling lost and living in despair. The level of inequality and poverty in the US is higher than Brazil or Pakistan. Social mobility is higher in Pakistan than in the US. The top 1% have hijacked the economy, bought the parties and own the media. Where the Cares Act (March 2020) gave $4.2 TRILLION to the top 5% of the population (with no oversight) and a $1;200 cheque to each person. With all respect Rich (and I love your show and book) no amount of mindfulness and referral to Guru Singh will stop you from being evicted during a pandemic and stop the spiral into abject poverty. That's not a perception problem. If you have a family and you're homeless, that's a very real problem. Yes, the country is going to hell, but this time its very real. Rich, referring to what your colleague said that feeling disenfranchised is a perception thing rings of a person who really hasn't a fucking clue what they are talking about. Sorry for the bad language but, at a time like this, its a truly uninformed and stupid thing to say. Yet, typical of liberals who think in some way they are insightful and progressive. Sorry, those comments triggered me. Big time. And to dig a little deeper, the reason a lot of people voted Trump and will again, is because the feel disenfranchised and live in despair, with no agency. History has show people look to the strong man for answers. They are not just racists ( although some of them are) they need answers to their very real problems. Trump, by the way wont give them the answers he'll just point at immigrants and Mexicans but neither will Biden do anything either. And the liberal class has done nothing to help. As they have no ideas to offer and haven't a clue what to do. (Read 'Death of the Liberal Class' - Chris Hedges). As clearly demonstrated by your colleague's comments. You should have Chris Hedges on. He will articulate this issue like no other. Bye, with Metta.
