I just finished my ObGyn rotation and had a rough start with the attending physician. Hopefully this helps anyone who is having a hard time with a boss, professor, roommate, family member, or friend! let me know your experiences and what helped you get through :)

You know something…having a narcissistic parent and being held at gunpoint has given me so much power to deal with those nay sayers. Piece of advice, it’s not you it’s the person throwing the tantrum. They have issues that they haven’t cleared from and yes being kind will pay off just be patient y’all!

For some reason RU-vid recommend this video to me. I’m glad it did 😊. You talked with a lot of wisdom how to deal with difficult people. RESPECT ✊

currently a second year student..also at DO school. We had an obGyn attending who does our OB lectures and she was leading one of our clinical procedural skills. I kid you not she picks on ME in front of everyone and PIMPS the living crap out of me. I couldn't even answer the first question and she KEPT on asking question after questions. Like bruh, if i knew the answer i would have given you and she could have skipped to someone else. What pissed me off the most was the fact even when i asked her a question so responds back everytime saying "WHAT DO YOU THINK"....Now i do not even want to do rotations where she's currently teaching. Also I like what you said about prayer!

Ohhhh I know that feeling. It’s like you just got punched in the gut & now you want to throw up lol. This was my biggest fear with rotations too & I’ve ended up having my share of them. I will say that practice does help (depending on how you cope). The more exposure I’ve gotten to these kinds of people the better I’ve been able to handle them. Depending on how your school works, you could have 4-8 weeks with a mean doctor & you do not want to spend everyday anxious & miserable. What has helped me the most is knowing I’m secure & valued no matter what they say. When someone makes an example out of you or makes you feel stupid, and you can turn around & not even bat an eyelash, you’ve just won. It’s easier said then done but it’s great practice for life. I also like to tell myself, they must’ve been pushed around a great deal in their life that they having to make others unhappy to. When you can have a healthy respect for them as a preceptor but also realize they are human & as lost as the next person, it gets a lot easier I promise. Best of luck!

This is honestly my fear once I start clinicals because it’s impossible for me to learn in a hostile environment but I think it comes with the territory of being in medicine I guess 🤷🏾‍♀️

When you said “him” I realized the student who stood up to the male doctor was a male too. I think that is a bit different in terms of male students standing up for themselves. It’s harder for us ladies I think for people to take us seriously and for us to be vocal about our feelings as well

I always said the same thing. I don’t like being demeaned or yelled at (lol I am sure no one likes it but I take it so personally). I became pretty sensitive in Medical School. Thankfully I have not experienced sexism yet. This doctor was pretty equally mean to everyone. He responded best with people who stood up to him including the female nurses. I just don’t have that personality. What year are you? :) You will see that you adapt pretty quickly to your environment because there’s unfortunately not any other option. You’ll find what gets you through the day or hour & then hold onto that so you don’t carry a weight of feeling miserable all the time.

Not a healthcare worker but, I understand what you are saying and unfortunately there are some people out there that do respond better when you’re angry and popping off on them. I’ve worked at several places where I had a manager or a coworker that were like that, it sucks. I think people are like that because someone popping off on them maybe keeps them in check? At least that my theory. Either way, I avoid places that AT ALL TIMES LOL. I’m sorry but I don’t want to work somewhere where I have to constantly argue or snap at my own boss constantly to get them to listen to me, that’s not healthy. I know this video is old but I related to your story in some way and I had to share my thoughts. You did the right thing. I’m not going to be toxic because that’s what you’re used to or that helps you in some sick way, that’s not who I am. I can get mad but I avoid people who take me there. I don’t see it as a good thing that I have to challenge my own boss to be seen as “worthy” of respect, F that noise. I’m not sinking myself down to your low level behavior just because it’s the norm for you, I’m just leaving lol.

That’s the way it was in dental school. Students didn’t want to bother the oral surgery facility because they were very intimidating. Most of the other faculty were generally nice. lol

tbh this sounds like more of a "you" problem than a "mean attending" problem

@@lifetime_learner I hope you go into some form of academic medicine and be a teacher of young doctors. We need good real teachers and you seem like you would be good at it. Congrats on your residency spot. Study hard. Make a difference. Being a physician is the most difficult job in the world but it is also the greatest.
