Oliver wakes at dawn to steal biscuits and treats from the kitchen. Not only are mum and dad exhausted, but when Jo reveals the dangerous lengths this five year old will go to for treats - it’s time for action.
At Jo’s advice roadshow she’s dealing with the three year old who won’t give up breast-feeding and a severe case of sibling rivalry.

Feel so sad for Josh, I could get why he was reacting so badly to bullying. When he said the teacher is useless is probably cos they don’t listen to him, so yes maybe he wanted to be with a teacher who pays attention. Then the parents don’t listen and just take the side of the teachers and assume he has bad behaviours. So he lashes out at home where he feels he can get it out more safely. He’s very confrontational with self righteousness and anger about his situation.

No one ever wants to hear it but many teachers ARE useless about bullying, and children are not obligated to lie about it and pretend they’re more helpful than they are.

I also felt for Josh. His parents are stupid and never thought about the bullying he endures at school, and from his father.. Bullying is so very damaging and impeedes growth and learning. Thank god for Jo.❤

Josh’s parents are not stupid for not recognising the impacts the bullying had on him. The old saying “you don’t know what you don’t know “ is very true. Parenting does not come with an instruction manual. His father was reacting to Josh’s behaviour. If you haven’t been through this, you don’t know what it’s like. I had a child that was being bullied at school unbeknownst to us. His behaviour changed dramatically. He went from a loving, affectionate boy to an angry, reactive, explosive young boy. We thought it was puberty and the challenges of adolescence. His safe place was at home. He would let out his anger and frustration at home towards us all. We could not have dinner together because he would be too explosive if anyone said the wrong thing. It was almost like he wanted someone to react to. We walked on egg shells for almost a year and a half. It was only after we sort the help of a psychologist and the bully left the school that we found out what was happening to our child. We hadn’t even thought about the possibility of him being bullied. Call us naive but unless you live it, you don’t know what it’s like. He is thriving now and has grown up to be a compassionate, caring and loving young man. What you don’t know you don’t know.

My late father was very heavy handed with my brother and I. He often used his belt and was easily angry and authoritarian. I guess he was very frustrated with himself and often fought with mum (loud words) and always during meals. I left home to go overseas to work at 19 and never came back home. Years later I felt sorry to leave my brother behind.

I was bullied for 7 years long. During that time I hated my current teacher because she didn’t help me and I called her stupid. At home I would have outbursts and blame everybody for my pain and suffering. Being bullied does a lot with a child. When being bullied they can’t always control or know how they out their emotions. Always encounter children gently and let them know they’re loved but obviously also show discipline!

My 3rd child would go to bed and my husband and I used to stand at the end of her bed and chat about our day. She would nod off immediately because she felt loved, comforted and safe because we aren’t shutting her away or leaving alone while she’s awake. Once asleep bye bye 😃👍

With an angry child like that, if it were mine, I’d calmly pull him into another room and say to him “okay take a deep breath, take some time to relax…it’s okay to be angry, you’re allowed to be angry, but it’s not okay to hit and swear and shout at people.” And then I’d ask him to tell me why he’s feeling angry, what’s made him angry. And I’d also buy him a nice book for him to write all his thoughts in, and if he wants to discuss them at the end of each day, then that’s okay too. I’m not a parent but honestly if I were angry that’s how I’d like my parents to treat me

With the kid who snacks in the morning, firstly why so many snack options just lying about in easy reach? Maybe lock it, also if they’re waking up so far early from any adults and they’re hungry or bored they will find ways to occupy themselves and food is part of that. No structure or discipline or follow through. What Jo said about safety too, all that climbing on shaky objects.

We bought a big safe for snacks. The boys were happy with it, because 1 of them could not control his snacking. The consequence was the others got nothing, because the oldest ate it all. When I came home later from work they had their own box with snacks after school. It was for a few days. When they ate it all they were in bad luck. They respected the boxes of their brothers.

It sickens me when parents say their children won't eat and then its pantry time! Children get snacks in leau of meals and parents are unaware of how many snacks they actually eat. Even very young children are capable of sneaking food without parents notice. I do not believe a child didn’t eat anything at all for seven days, a full week with no food. Mom and dad, along with other members of the household will have been sneaking food to the child without others knowing, and the child will have been helping herself too.
