I missed pointing out that the spray can needs shaking before decanting. Maybe obvious to most people, but surely not all.

You can also turn the can upside down and spray all the aerosol out, let it completely stop hissing, and then you can just simply cut the can or poke a hole in it and pour it out. That way it doesn’t bubble over or fizz or anything. Used it a lot in the automotive world because car paint is expensive but spray cans are cheap. Taking the paint from a can and spraying it with a gun makes amazing cheap results.
@cassandrabenson4963

Thanks for this idea because my spray paint nozzle completely clogged and trying to get it working again with different measures took all the aerosol out

Also DO NOT touch the jar with your bare fingers!!! The heat from your skin will also boil the paint over and out of the jar. Do not cap the jar until an hour or two after letting it get up to room temp, it should never be capped while still cold, it will literally explode

I know this hasn’t been commented on in two years, but... When you decant a spray can, do you have to thin in out before using it in an airbrush? Or is already thinned considering it was in the can? I just recently started airbrushing an amazed at the difference in quality it makes! Thanks, love all the videos. It’s been 25+ years since I had done a previous model and your videos have taught me more in a few shows, than I learned as a teenager building models.

it is thinned straight out of the can. so no extra thinning needed.

@theopratama9047 2 года назад
@@TWATWAFFLE01 you mean 3 for spray paint and 1 for thinner?
@Sophie_519
@Sophie_519 Год назад
@@theopratama9047I can usually spray straight from the decanting (after letting it rest a little). the spray can really has mostly thinner. If kept in decanted jar for a while, you can literally see the paint separate from thinner (no big deal, just shake it up). Over time, depending on heat, air etc, you can observe that the thinner has reduced (evaporated) just add the appropriate thinner if you feel it doesn’t spray as smooth. An other tip would be to only decant what you need to use in one session. The paint and propellant stores incredibly well in the original can.

I use a very similar technique, but since the nozzles on the cans I use do not have suche an edge, I glue the straw with epoxy glue. It takes therefore too long. Hot glue would be more convinient, but I have not tried it before.

I decided to literally go all the way back to the beginning of your channel and try to find your first 3d printing videos. While this isn't a 3d printing video I have also wondered about decanting spray paint. It appears to me that you used a Caprisun straw to direct the paint from the can to the jar...am I right or are there special decanting straws out there? Also if you have a few links to help me find your first 3d printing videos that would be cool too. Love your content.

Not really, i have never done this before, this was the first time i tried it. I would suggest to only decant what you actualy need, and use an air tight glass container as that will not leak out the solvents in the paint. You could probably re thin it with tamiya paint thinner

The paint cans are more résistant and some color don't exist in 10 ml
@TheScalemodelingChannel

Because not everyone has paints in their surrounding area's that are easily used for aibrushing, or they have some pray cans left over wicht they would rather airbrush instead of using the spray can.

That makes sense, thanks! I'll probably be doing this with my left over rattle-cans when I get my airbrush.

Cool. Old vid, but just saw it... and it still relevant. It ABSOLUTELY AMAZES me that almost NOBODY reads any of the comments. You have MUCH patience answering the SAME 3 or 4 questions over, and over, and over, and over.. AND....... over. 😳😖
