Well people should know that life is hard, learning is hard and of course acting is hard. No matter how hard you do you'll find some people hate the idea of yours so it's ok. you're talented and you know that^^
There are actors that never went to drama school, I know workshops, coaching ect are a must but a Masters in drama is not nesacery to be a great actor.
You're right, of course, but a list of the most successful actors, or of those who manage to just keep in work, is headed mostly by those who DID go to a drama school (I don't mean a university course) for at least 2 years. Taking the whole thing seriously from the start, full-time, tends to launch careers early, and the exceptions usually have a very special talent, and - well - if they REALLY have a special talent - (or a relative who is a casting-director!) then, yes, they will manage with 2 years of classes. But serious, good, world-changing actors have usually gone to a drama school. I'm not saying drama schools are always good, - GOD knows they are often only ways for pompous, ignorant, out-of-work-actors to earn a living teaching rubbish to unaware newbies, but serious actors still need to study hard on ANYTHING for a few years, even at very average schools, or they dont get far. I’m 14 years old and I’ve always dreamt of become an actor for so long. Watching this guy’s videos are so entertaining to me and I really like how he’s keeps it 100. He doesn’t try to sugarcoat things and I really love that. There are so many people who say all you have to do to be an actor all you have to do is go to a class and get a headshot but acting is so much more than that. It’s a skill and it takes practice.
You're right. SO study some way to earn money so you can AFFORD to be an actor (periods unemployed, photos, classes, etc), or get started early so that you've got more experience of acting jobs than others of your age when you're 18. You’re absolutely right , when I first started I literally said “ I’ll just go be an actress” bc that’s easier . Easier than going to college or becoming a lawyer or journalist ( all things my mom wanted me to do ), and for a slight moment I thought I would be good at them because they involved in alot of speaking . Which is my specialty. I had the desire to be an actress at a young age and it never left me , so when I was of age to move out & do my own thing I said , fuck it I have to at least try . I came to California ( la ! without even visiting , with the idea that I was going to be on Disney in a week . LOL I was immediately humbled . The work ethic , the vulnerability, the confidence , the work that you must do internally with yourself to carry a career like this , is incredibly challenging. I had no idea I had stage fright until I went to class , I was always class clown so I thought this would be nothing . I discovered how insecure I was with myself internally & externally . There was so much rooted negative self beliefs that I had , that had to be annihilated. I audition for 4 years straight and couldn’t even land a co star until just last year when I booked my first series regular role for a popular show on Hulu. It was mind blowing , by no means was it luck. ALOT had to happen, ALOT of lessons I had to learn before a opportunity like this . I didn’t go to drama school even though I did get accepted to the neighborhood playhouse in Newyork , I didn’t go ( right when I was going to go my intuition told me to stay in California. ) within a few months after I booked my first indie film . Now I worked on this show for a year , and I felt intimidated often by the other actors , one is from London, she’s fabulous and everyone is much more experienced than me . I am the youngest . I had no coach or mentor . However I believe doing the work , actually doing it and learning from your peers is the best teacher . I know I am capable enough to be the story teller I want to be . I actually would like your services , I’ve been watching you for a while . I thought I will email you when I have my next challenging audition. I've been playing bass guitar for 20 years and i know its hard to learn a craft. why would anyone think that acting is any less difficult.? Its Art. I think your thinking that people don't know this.
I have said this very same thing forever. Glad you verbalized this reality here. If everyone who wants to be an actor took their training as serious as one becoming an Olympic swimmer, an opera singer, a dentist... ect, people would stop dead in their tracks. it just SEEMS to be so accessible. ( I am a human being, why the hell would I have to go to school to learn how to behave/ act like one?)

Like many, I have done community theatre, taking some acting lessons, but many years have passed. I am now 50, and have decided to get back into the game in any venue (does not have to be paid). The irony is I am now 50 and am now in a very different stage of my life. It will interesting to see how I am now casted compared to years back. Thank you again for all this great info!
Like most of us, I watch a lot of TV and movies. and the more I learn about acting over the years (which is still very little), the more I appreciate what actors do on the screen. I don't just mean big time actors in big movies. I mean the kind of actors people tend to take for granted, like supporting players in run of the mill TV series. These people are highly skilled in ways that aren't immediately obvious until you try it yourself and start picking up a few fundamentals. It's only then that you start to realize the time and work that goes into their training. There are so many little skills you don't even realize you're seeing-- how to turn, where to move, where to look, how to just stand still properly or do unobtrusive background stuff the viewer isn't supposed to focus on. I think TV and movies become much more enjoyable if you develop even a little bit of firsthand appreciation for the work that goes in. These videos certainly help.

Your videos are fun to watch. I appreciate your down-to-earth style and unapologetic advice. I learned fairly early on that acting wasn't for me. Part of my life held onto a stupid dream that I could become an actor and not have do a lot of work at it in the pursuit. Your point is well said. Acting is a serious trade that requires serious work and devotion. There are no shortcuts, IMO.
I have been watching many of your video tutorial and definitely they are been very helpful to me to approach acting in a more systematical way. I always believe that I'm a 'Developing Actor' and everyday I want to develop my skills for better performances. Thank you so much Sir.
I am 55 year old woman, living in Cardiff. As a distraction from the real world and all the ugly, script writing, reading and studying the art of acting, have become my escapism. Greetings John. I'm a new subscriber. I am a professionally trained stage actor in Montreal, Quebec. Now I work in a smoke meat plant and grateful for being employed. I love acting but hate the business end of it all. Now I'm coaching a friend who's a complete beginner in a community theatre which I intend on joining soon. I actually don't want a career as an actor, so I'll act for free with others regardless of their respective skill level. Discovering your channel snapped me out of depression--LOL.

First of all, thank you for the uploads! However, you are right, though, that I shouldn't be watching this video. This is because it is true that when I "consider" to be an actor, I thought it is something that everyone can "try" it out. I guess I will take the advantage of the internet to say this "publicly," that I now know the fact that I am just a lazy bum! The saddest thing among all this is not one lives like a pig, but one could not stand to accept the fate of being a pig. I always want to be something different, at least, be "proper". I am living like "most" of other university students, wasting precious time. I feel powerless. Again, thank you for the video(s). I really enjoy and appreciate them :)

I imagined myself being an actor, and I loved this idea but when I looked up the things I have to do, I knew it was not gonna be easy I always do that, I try to do something like singing for example then I fail and I don't try again simply because I don't really want it, but I think this time is different I hope so Thank you for this, will continue watching your videos
Great points! To think I could just fall into a successful acting career is disrespectful to what you all did to prepare. I've been doing software, graphic art and and database development for 20+'years, and didn't reach my level without putting in the time. That being said, I did all that because I LOVED doing it... So the initially poor paycheck and low respect I received initially felt okay, because I was doing the things I wanted to do. It all makes more sense now. Thank you for this lesson.
Yes, but the 'preparation' you choose may decide what jobs you get. What kind of part suits you? (No actors can play every kind, Clooney can't (probably) play unkind roles very well, and Streep probably can't play a drug addict). And where you do you want to work (maybe you should be doing classes THERE and building up some contacts NOW. And how many plays have you seen and read n the last week, or screenplays, so how do you compare with other actors who want your jobs and do double your study? Don't just go to any class. Maybe do commercials now! Or maybe not, and read all of Shakespeare 3 times. John Windsor-Cunningham

This last weekend I attended a workshop with a theater group "Plague Mask Players" in Dallas, and last month got a speaking part in a film and a featured extra part in another. As a technicial creature I love film (and do filming and editing for friends and family), but connecting with that theater group opened my eyes even further. I will continue to press in and absorb all I can from those more experienced than I. And for now... More of your great videos!
Is drama school necessary? By that I mean BFA. Leaning toward film acting, my question is, should I just take workshops, and classes? I'm assuming it's cheaper and more ethical. Acting for camera, and acting for stage are two different things. I''m inspired by film. Also, not a lot of money to get into any of the good schools.
bmags sorry that nobody responded to you yet. But to tell you the truth: there is not a huge difference between film and stage acting. People tend to think stage acting is to act exaggerated and film acting is realistic.. ever seen someone really angry and throwing a tantrum? That's real eventhough it's big movements and shouting. Trust me if I tell you this: going to theatre classes will help you more as an actor than going to film acting classes. Best of luck!
Just a science student who loves acting and writing. (Was sitting with a friend in a lecture hall and not knowing a lecture in that hall were to take place. A woman asked me to be the main character of her storyline that still has to be approved & acted out in June/July. I'm so happy, excited & scared. I said Yes. @@dumbassputa1818 i did it & they were amazed when they heard im a sckence student. one of the judges asked me for my name & cell number! & said that i should always go pop up at her office to enquire about any dramas, the National theatre might need someone new. I was excited! If it wasnt for covid-19, i mightve done something big by now**
I like this. It’s just simply facts and if people are in it bc it’s “easy” then of course it’d be discouraging. I spent a few months thinking about acting again and making it my career. I’m currently 26 and I’ve done a lot of theater as a child and in high school. I actually wanted to become an actor but yknow you just thought you wouldn’t make it. 10 yrs later and I still have this dream and now I’m finally deciding to pursue. I don’t really know what I should be doing and going. Do I just take classes for a while? I guess that would depend on my goal right? I want to act in film. What should I be doing for the next year?
Nobody can give serious answers to your question without knowing you and seeing the kind of acting-jobs you are likely to get to begin with. Yes, try to find playwrights you like so that you read everything they've written and find parts you will battle for the chance to play. Make sure you know what you most need to learn - whether connected to your voice or to realizing what 'suits' you and what doesn't, but in the end just DO it as much as you can, anywhere, and be the best person n your classes, by studying for them hard. It may sound "corny" but it was a fleeting interest in reading Hamlet (for the first time) that ignited this... determination. I am currently (slowly) working through your videos regarding the British Accent - it's really enlightening and lots of fun to work along with. It's also super difficult as I'm sure you expect/understand. Thanks for kind words. Your idea of diving into HAMLET is great as there are some simple parts in it, and understanding it may help you understand a hundred other plays and screenplays. And be fun. Regarding your work on an accent, forgive me for saying this, but I don't think people care about (or even notice) an accent nowadays, because all they're worried about is whether a person speaks clearly, and is easy to understand, and has some note of warmth or variety in their voice. sometimes i feel like it’s impossible for me to become something as good as an actress because of the life that i live. i didn’t grow up rich and i live such a normal life here i. Texas and i have basic mexican parents who don’t believe in dreams like that. but then i remind myself that i’m very different from the rest of my family and i have such a huge passion for acting and becoming a different person. I know it’s not easy and i know it’s a lot of hard work but i think i have some acting talent and i just really want to make it. i support everyone here in these comments, go out there and chase your dream ! work for it and just try it out. Thank you! I'm going to be getting my degree in acting/theatre/performance and am currently doing some individual research on Commedia Del'Arte (i hope i spelled that right). Some advice id give is, never stop learning.
I don't want to sound as if I am disagreeing with you, but we learn most about acting by DOING it, and as much as possible, If we accept work almost anywhere (or find expert classes) all the time then we just 'find' that we keep learning. The process should be fun. John
You're hell of a Brit. Not to mention an amazing teacher too! I'm a degree student and I've never acted anywhere yet. But I'm sort of an artist, I can draw and paint well, and I hear about me having a good taste of music. I'm kinda better in my language skills too and now learning Japanese (although that doesn't relate here). Art, kind of runs in our family. I remember having done a little acts when I was in school and having got the loudest applause. Now I think that may be I should put my shyness off n get in some auditions, participate in college dramas, but I doubt if that will take me any further. I'm already starting too late.
Well, be careful who you ask for help. There are people the actors union is taking to court for promising introductions to agents etc etc when they've no real experience! Piece of advice if comes in effect there will be Shortage of actors in world as 80% actors or aspiring actors do not study that deep Thai craft . I myself find so difficult but I do believe to be best i need to give 2 years and than see if I learnt well ! This is so true this video is simply awesome 👏🏻

when I watch movies or tvs sometimes I try to emulate what I'm watching, from the tone of voice to the expression of the eyes and body movement. would you say this is good practice?
Honesty, passion.Try it and then decide.Golf says if you think you can or can't your probably right.Do the work, get professional help.Dont practice your mistakes and be intentional.

Well, there are, of course, 'crazy' parts in some films and plays, Jennifer Lawrence being happy to play them, but if you want to see the 'straight', serious, calm side of a character you have to find some hidden part of yourself that is like that. John

I feel that acting is almost twice as much work because you have to learn the character's profession in a way. For instance learn the medical lingo and how and why a Dr would act a certain way.
Yes, I am mad. I am a nurse and love to act. I am a trained dancer. I used to film myself doing my dance routines in my backyard. I love to entertain. I do acting for fun and not for approval.

Thanks for the video john jowever i still have a huge debate in my head that getting past a drama school Doesn't ensure that you will be getting roles as there aren't any for the people of colour(except for black) . Look at the movies nowadays(critically acclaimed movies) many roles are either for black or white people,im brown and tge last oscar worthy movie that i saw was lion. . Excuse for my weak english as its not my first language
I understand the problem of the 'debate' you say you're having with yourself. In the end I think it all depends on how much you want to act - WHATEVER the consequences, whether you make a living at it or only manage part-time not mattering as long as you are able to do some acting. And you may not know how much you want it until you do a serious course of classes. And maybe not even then. Acting is a difficult life. There is also the need to be good at it, which makes your color nothing to do with what parts you play. Enjoyed your videos as always. As a person that took drama class all the way through high school and actually enjoyed it, as well as took on some small projects like a short student film, kapa haka (NZ performance) and so on, what advice would you give me to start? Do notice that im in New Zealand and film industry here is very small I do have a plan to move up north to try for an acting school in Auckland which I have to go through auditions to get in that has limited space. Any advice on that as well?

You are competing with hundreds of other actors, some of whom have spent years studying how to play parts which suit them most, knowing yourself well, in detail, and understanding scripts n a way which the average person would never manage EVER. If you work day and night on parts then there's a chance of success. If you don't there's a good chance of none. The fun, the friendships, the personal growth and the confidence come from dedication. I'm neary 30. Did repertory theatre on the west end for a year as my "training" when i was 22 and have only had scant jobs in the last 5 years (including covid years). I'm missing something crucial I just know it. Audiences and agents and friends say I'm good, but it just isn't enough. I have no idea what to do.

Hello! I am currently a sixteen-year-old who has acted starting around two years ago. I feel that currently(as both my school and play were canceled) I am unsure as of what to do to practice acting. What you ask is important, if you continue to be serious about 'acting'. Because your age may be your biggest advantage since directors and casting people will not expect you to have done anything much yet, but by the age of 19 they will expect you to have attended classes and done some actual acting jobs. Hello! I have a question. To become an actress what kind of classes should we take? Like to be more talented? And how to understand what kind of scenes can you act? Like if you're talented in crying or like being a soft person in the act. And where should you start as like a teen?

I can only suggest you ask your parents if you can do one session on skype with me (they are very welcome to be in on the session as you are young) and we can cover all of your questions about different schools, methods, career paths etc then. You inspired me so much! I want to start acting, i'm 20 and I want to aim high, and I know it's a long term game but I'm from Italy and here there is not a lot to do so I was thinking about moving to Australia to study acting and build curriculum, and then after like 4-5 years of experience moving to LA - Do you think it can work? I know that if you are from Europe and you wanna move to LA you have to first be famous in your own country, but i wanna live abroad. Do you think this is a good plan to aspiring getting famous? Is it better to start in Italy, becoming "somebody" here and then moving to LA?

I have the same problem and plans. I didnt know that you have to be famous in your own country first and move to LA later until I read this comment. I'm just curious and sorry for asking this if its too personal but did you change your plans after 1 year?
I wanted to start learning acting for quite sometime now, but there are no acting classes at my city (I'm not allowed to go to any other city, alone that is). Plus i don't have a room to take online classes in, since a share a room and we can't afford acting classes cause they are really expensive. Does anyone have any advice?
Well, be careful what advice you get first! It's easy to find out who I am, and not to worry because my website ( Windsor-Cunnningham.com ) has everything about me, and your parents would be welcome in any coaching session if you wanted one. But you are not in prison, and you can practice clear speaking, and be the best reader of anything at school, and get advice from teachers, and read 30 recent plays and screenplays, each a few times, which will be almost as good as going to some small drama school, and then see if you still want to act. But be careful: there are some very poor teachers out there who will waste your time and just want your money, and a few who are better than me! Find them! John Windsor-Cunningham
@@NewYorkActingCoach thanks for the advice:) I've seen countless videos where people tell 'me' that I can't do anything besides taking classes so i got really anxious and sad. Of course i sould take classes in a year or two when my sister moves out and i am old enough to work, but i don't want to just wait while those two years pass by, because in those two years, i could be making something much more meaningfull.
