Rules she mentioned: 1. If there are multiple items of the same thing - keep fave 2. Signs of wear 3. Haven’t worn in a year 4. If it hasn’t fit you 90% of the year 5. If you’re not comfortable in it 6. If you’re not feeling confident in it

For stained or worn items, I turn them into rags to clean the house. Save on using paper towels and they do a great job. I cut it into squares and wash them a few times before ultimately getting rid of the rags.

I never used to donate bras, even expensive ones that were brand new (I’m not great about returning things that don’t work for me). But then I found out that they are the most wanted and really needed items in those donation shipments that are sent to African countries. So, I’m donating them now, but they must be in great condition. Local resellers in Africa depend on these shipments, it’s a boon to the economy, and most people buy their clothes secondhand.

I loved this video. I'm a 52 year old who dressed up as a front desk receptionist most of my life, but held a position the last two years that was extremely casual. I'm ready to tackle my closet as I look for the next adventure. This was full of wonderful reminders. ❤️

Great inspiring video. Can't wait for the series to continue. I think decluttering the closet is a never ending chore! I've heard people say a good way to keep on top of it is when you buy one item to go in your closet, one item must come out. I haven't been able to bring myself to do this, but I think it is a great idea.

I am Completely OCD, So, my clothes are organized R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. (colour coded by the colour spectrum) & by type. I converted the smallest bedroom in our house into my walk in closet. 1 side of my closet is autumn/ winter & the other Spring/Summer. dresser is in the middle with undies, socks, jammies & accessories. Handbags line the upper shelves around the room & in the closet (in my dressing room) are my shoes & boots, they are organized by season & style. It was my dream to have a dressing room like this, it was finally realized when we bought a new house. It makes a Huge difference to see everything at a glance.

Love this series! H&M will take clothes and recycle them (clothes that have holes, stained, can’t be re-sold through consignment; really any textile) and will in turn give you a 15% discount for your purchase that day. Jcrew and madewell will take old denim to recycle and give you a $20 coupon for denim at their stores. Those are just the one’s that I’ve used, but there’s probably more ;) And if there’s a stain on a piece of clothing I love, I’ll try spraying with Puracy Stain Remover, then soaking in Oxyclean (or similar oxygen cleaner) for 24hrs, then laundering - often it works and then I get to keep my item! But, I’d only go through that hassle for something you really love ;) Love all your tips and looking forward to the whole series!

The idea is great, but we should remember that cheap fast fashion stores like H&M are not the place to buy things sustainably. They have very poor working conditions for the factory workers, and their clothes are low quality and won't endure many times of use, which leads to huge amounts of clothes being thrown away after just a few uses. Fast fashion is one of the biggest causes of global warming, natural resource abuse and pollution. I also must add, that most of H&M(and also other brands) clothing material contains elastane, which makes actual recycling impossible. So when you bring the clothes to the store, they basically just burn the clothes with elastane or trash them, it is not actual recycling. Take your money to sustainable, planet-friendly and conscious stores instead! Invest your money in high-quality pieces that can last for years. It will not only save the planet and make you appreciate your clothes more, it also saves money in the long run, when you don't need to buy new clothes to replace the worn out ones every ½ years!
@kimberlyperrotis8962

Unfortunately, this service has been shut down because of the pandemic, I hope H&M resumes it someday.

Here is what I bet they do with those clothes. There are people called factors who buy used clothing by weight. I learned this being president of a womens shelter board all the socially conscioius well off wives donated clothes to us for our women residents and to help them get a job ....they desperately needed business wardrobes. We also accepted furniture donations so we could help them furnish apts etc. We eventually ran out of storage space so the director asked my permission to SELL these things the excess, to a factor who came to town periodically to buy by weight from Goodwill and the other charities. I gave my permission when I saw the incredible QUANTITY we had stored. We had some generous local women! These tings had become things that were in the way of the staff etc. So we had a periodic infusion of cash to our operating budget. We were bursting at the seams and never could use that quantity of stuff. Lots of charitable organizations have to do this this. It is little knwon becaus they dont want to discourage donations of ANY kind it would be insulting to supporters. Now I live in Guatemala as a retiree. These factors ship that stuff heremand of course other places ie sell it to wholesalers here by weight after shipping with the shippimg costs added into the price and a profit for the importers. These are in 100lb packs sealed. THIS is the distribution system for.used and alsomnew excess manufactured clothing from the USA. All of the used have been washed in big machines before exportation. Also, large dept stores will only discount items to maybe 50% off they typically DONT go. down to 80 or 90% off certainly not the better stores. Store chains would rather DONATE them and write off the retail value against profits. Yes...that is what they do. We get end of season items from LAST season here, tags are supposed to have been removed but people doing that often miss items. Sometime the hangtags are on with the full.price sooooo I buy my favorits brands HERE... of course no selection options as to color or size are available but I often go once a week....usually new packs are delivered every week just before the weekend. My saving grace is no one here knows American brands... they dont know that Ralph Lauren or Banana Republic is often a better quality garment than H& M or the named lines WalMart sells. I know. I skip the cheapies and fill my wardrobe with last years Ralph Lauren, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic etc etc etc. My size 10 or 12 is not popular here. Guatemalan women are most often short petite sizing 2s,4s, 6s mostly, a few are larger but the young women who buy most of the items are tiny sizes. They also want bright sparkly clothes...gee gaws, we are not talking undertated elegance. Bright colors really DO look best on them....browns and camels they particularly avoid those are core wardrobe colors for me. So is navy which theybavoid prefering black ehich is too.harsh for memso I get alot ofmoptions and canmbe picky. Thee items I like sit there, YAY. Of course there are professional.women doctors, lawyers, my dentist, etc millionaires and multi millionaire women here too ...the latter fly to Miami to shop. I know some of them. They wear some designer items but they also wear the brands I like for sportwear. They would not he seen DEAD in the mercado to shopmand of those womennfrom professionals up, it is not done ..their maids shop there. They send their maids OUT there to buy fresh veggies and fruits. it's a lively thriving place. It has grown in quality the years I have lived here. Sometimes they get nice new shoes and boots and even handbags...I have some gorgeous things even vintage store clearouts so I have a few real designer gems found there dresses jackets evening wear. Prices are ridiculously inexpensive. Blouses, slacks, skirts, tops go for $4.00 doesnt matter if it isTarget or Ralph Lauren or vintage designer. Blazers are usually $6 or 7. Dresses unless really special are under $10.00 they do get fewer dresses and fewer really gret quality dresses. These are rare finds. Shoes are $5.00 if new, $1.00 a pair if used. I dont buy used footwear. I have several pair of upscale designer loafers and driving loafers and sandals five or six pairs of quality heels and a couple pairmof evening shoes all good brands I dont bother with the cheap stuff there is just too much of it. That is mostly what I wear everyday. The sneakers though are all cheap knockoffs. I do find new Sperry boat shoes which I buy sometimesmfor vacations/cruises. I also find boots and cowboy boots made for women even Justins make it down here. I have three beautiful classic colored and design BRAHMIN bags I love...one is faux brown croc and the most originally expensive is a briefcase style black a classic both of these two bags are still being manufactured and another caramel colored one. All were in perfect condition. I have a smaller real alligator reconditioned relined 50s snap close top handbag from 1950s obviously from a vintage shop somewhere, how it got here I cannot imagine. No vintage Chanels or very collectible bags etc though. I have nice new leather and suede jackets very high quality. I can afford to be fussy about the ones I buy because we get LOADS of them. I have a sequin bomber jacket and a silk one I will wear this Fall since they are in style again they are only a few years old. Coats, blazers outer jacket styles if you buy classic ones recycle back in style. I have my favs. This is one thing about living here that is great fun. I never buy anything that LOOKS used even that reconditioned relined vintage alligator classic handbag was in mint condition. It just isnt worth buying anything scuffed or abused in any way. I have to control myself, there is TOO much available here and new things are always arriving at the Pacific port, mostly from the western coast of the USA. I am right now going through my seasonal wardrobe and regifting things I no longer want in bags to my favorite vendors...I dont resell them, they are gifts to the people who treat me so well. I am known to do this periodically and those hundred pound packs used to go for $100 pre Covid likely they doubled in price since then as shipping and truckingcosts etc have gone up here like everywhere The things they dont sell after a few weeks they resell to other vendors who service smaller and smaller towns higher and more and more remote in the mountains or lower altitudes where it get VERY HOT for cheaper and cheaper prices..This is the most well off town in the entire country it is a toursit town and week end getaway place for capitalanos with many boutique and upscale hotels and a few backpacker places for young international.tourists. I am not the only gringa who shops this way...it is a recreational hobby for some others who love clothes. I have taught several new women how to do this here ...introduced them to my favorite vendors etc.The only thing I still buy from the USA when I go there are my bras. I stock up then and often shoes....I am hard to fit in shoes. BALI bras and panties are made made in EL SALVADOR.close by and we get shipments. trucked into the mercado. Mostly I buy the panties they are new and unused of course. I prefer a different brand of bras that fit me better but they have lovely new bras sitting there in the mercado freshly manufactured but for whatever reason overruns etc sitting here now.

I feel that this a continuing chore. Nearby is a company that gives women clothing for those staring or looking for a job or those who lost clothing for any reason. The women get a voucher before they are given any clothing. I have lost weight and had worked in an office so it gives me pleasure to donate for this good reason! 💗

I also use the backward hanger method. So easy to see what I haven’t worn at the end of the year. I also put all my shoes in plastic see through shoe boxes and put a post-it-flag on each box every January. As I wear the shoes, I remove the post it flag.

I use "trash" clothes as rag for dirty jobs (I don't use paper towels). Like cat vomit, or polishing shoes, or wiping the bacon grease out of the pan before washing it, etc. I'm still throwing it away, true, but at least it's had one more use first.

I've been watching a lot of Declutter Your Wardrobe videos, and they sold me on the idea of velvet hangers. I looked up a lot online. After a few days, I finally ordered some. Then I saw this video, and thought, 'oh no, those are the perfect hangers! And I've already ordered some others!' I checked the ones you recommend, and sure enough, they 'do not ship to' my location! Great Video Amanda! Definitely something I need to do in the very near future. I usually try to declutter every 6months, gives me a chance to wear things during a couple seasons, if I dont reach for it, then out it goes. One other thing I do is put all of the donations in a box. I leave that box in my trunk, or spare room in the closet. Out of sight, out of mind. If I dont go back into the box for anything, then after a month, out it goes! If I do, then I know I decluttered it without really realizing that I liked it

Almost all old clothing (and other textiles like bedding, towels, etc.) can be taken to any H&M store for recycling, and they will give the donor a 15% discount coupon for their purchase. I would not donate anything with tar, paint, glue, etc. on it, I don’t think the fiber can be reused in those cases. H&M is doing some wonderful things with this program: wearable garments are donated/sold and some fibers are remade into new garments. I rarely throw away any textiles anymore.

When I got pregnant I got rid of pretty much all my clothes. I didn’t want my little sizes taunting me. I’m glad I did because my son is 3 and I’m just now 5 pounds away from my prebaby weight and I’m a 6 when I was a 2 or 4 because my bones genuinely moved around or at least how the weight is distributed. I started off as a 12 after my son came home and stayed a 10 for the rest of the first year. I felt good about my body once I was a 10 and my shape didn’t look pregnant anymore. I’m not one to diet or not eat what I want so it took a long time for my body to slowly go down to looking like I typically do. I didn’t have my old clothes staring at me and making me feel bad about my body that had worked so hard to have a healthy baby. Now I’m getting to slowly buy new clothes and I need to go through and declutter what is too big for me now. So if any new moms are out there, get rid of those old clothes from before! You have bigger things to focus on and you deserve to feel beautiful at whatever size you are.

I'm organized by type, and color. Long sleeved, short sleeved, sweaters, pants, skirts, dresses, coats - then lightest to darkest. There is a specific way to fold sweaters on a hanger so they're easier to see and reach, which I do as well as folding with tissue paper if not hung. I know... seems like a lot, but once it's done, it's easier.

These are all great tips, Amanda! I think one of the best was listed near the beginning: if you saw a specific item hanging at your favourite store right now, would you still purchase it? If yes, keep it; if not, out it can go! Thank you for taking the time to share your suggestions with us - I think your idea for your new series is terrific! Most sincerely, Shannon A. :)

I gave up wearing white years ago, because nothing stays white for long after meeting me! I don't have the particular problem you mentioned, but i am a mucker. I love the look of a white t-shirt, but it never occurred to me that it should be replaced every year! 🤯 Thank you!

For worn out items you may be able to look into fabric recycling services, depending on where you live. You were spot on with not donating them though, secondhand shops and goodwills don't usually have any shortage of incoming stock so if you have worn out or dirty things mixed into a box or bag that you're donating, best case scenario is they won't put them out and they'll have to dispose of those things for you, but they may also just put the entire box or bag aside, kind of like if you contaminate your recycling. Good rule of thumb is donate items that are saleable, they don't have to be something you would buy, but are they in buyable condition (could you see someone grabbing them from a non-secondhand store?), no holes, no stains, etc.

My closet is color-coordinated as well since the majority of the hanging things are all dresses. It is a bit of a pain because I have way more patterns than solids so it doesn't look organized by color really at all but it is funny because it shows how many blue and grey-scale items I have even though my favorite color by far is pink

I agree about the matching hangers; I have black velvet ones that I have bought over time from Home Goods and Target and I love them! I don't get people who use and keep in their closet plastic or wire hangers that are obviously mismatched. I think you mean "Mercari" I organize my by category and then color coded within each category

Good tips! Instead of trashing clothes: - If too trashed, use them as cleaningrags/dustrags before going. - Save a jeanspatch for future jeansincidients that needs sewing - Even if there's a hole in the clothing, if it's a functional warm/somewhat waterproof garment the homeless rather takes a warm sweater with a hole then a whole cold. - Underwear and socks are much appreciated at the homeless shelters here, since they seldom have the luxury of showers they appreciate 90°C washed donations. - Some stores gives bonus checks for turning in fabrics (doesn't need to be whole) for recycling.

Fit is pretty serious for me. I am short and large chested with "petite hourglass", so if the top is not well fitted, I look overweight. I do however keep maternity items I cannot currently fit, because I know I plan on having quite a few kids and reusing them. I would do the same with nursing tops/dresses. Black is not in my color palette (overall warm), so I would not keep a black top except maybe 1 for a funeral. I would ideally like just 1 black outfit for funerals and that's it, but I have not gotten black bottoms out of my wardrobe yet. I am less strict with the would I buy this now thing just because although I do like looking nice I also want to save some $. If it's nice enough I will keep it unless I have too much. I also generally don't like more menswear/boyish style pieces, so if it is too much like that style I probably would not keep it.

Thank you so much for your tips! I normally clean and organize my closet in the spring time. For now I'm looking for a few bins to put in my closet for like blankets and sheets. I keep all my sweaters in one area, color coordinated. I keep all my long sleeves, short/tanks, long sleeve dresses and short sleeve dresses together and by color coordinated too. I find it so much easier to find what I want to wear. I have quite a few things to organized in my closet. Looking forward to seeing how you organized yours.

If you want to know the answer as to why try you are keeping the clothes and don't know why then try self reflection. If that does not work try therapy. It may help you figure out why you won't get rid of your clothes and you wanting to keep it. Subconsciously there is something that you are not aware of as to why you are holding to the clothes.

We just updated our hangers to the Amazon hangers last summer so anything that wasn't worn by my son or I and transferred to the new hangers were purged this last week. I also retired way too early due to a disability last year so a lot of my wardrobe is not appropriate anymore. So 9 bags went to thredup. 20 bags went to a place in Chicago where I volunteer called the Freestore. And then everything NWT I want to list on Poshmark but never tried. I've only done Offerup. Thanks for the video! Perfect timing
