In today's video we're discussing the 1970s revival that is currently trending in both interior design and fashion. It’s no wonder this soothing autumnal palette and bold sculptural shapes and prints are taking center stage in fall 2021. I’ll walk you through the history and origins of the seventies aesthetic in interior design, key elements of the style, and ideas on how to integrate that seventies style into your home this fall.
Today I’m partnering with my friend and capsule wardrobe expert Lauren McKinney to show you how trends can dominate across both interior design and fashion. Today she uploaded a companion video with inspo and outfit ideas on how to give you wardrobe a seventies spin this fall.

My favourite styles from the seventies are the all-wood furniture pieces, squircles wallpapers, the orange, harvest gold, avocado and chocolate colours and the groovy fonts and daisy prints❤

Back then, people didn't seem to be afraid of colours like avocado green, orange, brown, mustard, and harvest gold. Not were they afraid of patterns. The louder the better. Some of that spirit of exploration and experimentation would be useful today. I'm so sick of grey and refined!

It's so fun to look deeply into the historical and cultural context for these designs. I always found it so fascinating that after WWII America craved calming yet beautiful pastel shades in vehicles - the more fun the better. Pale turquoise and yellow sedans took over the road with wide fins and statement designs. I always remark on this when driving - I'm so bored of all the plain colors we use in vehicles today. It's such a product of the time period. The same could certainly be said of anything really, including interior design. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hey; Lindsay; my name is Autumn hailing to you from Canada. As of late; the 70's has been my go-to era when it comes to safety; being happy and feeling like I've come home to myself. I've been listening to alot of 70's music and am in the process of downloading 70s tv shows and films. And it seems that yes; I have lots of items at home that are both 70's inspired all the while leaning more to the modern-day. However. I'm beginning to really lean more towards needing to find some classics on a budget here in my hometown. thank you for inspiring me even more with this information...

This is a great topic. So much hate has been directed towards the 70s aesthetic and style for so long that the 70s are almost synonymous is many peoples minds with the apex of bad taste. I think what many forget is that the majority of people don’t live in a well designed home. The bits and pieces that they grab onto when they think of the 70s are likely influenced by their memories of a traditionally influenced hodge podge of decor in the 70s. I grew up in a house that was built in 1976. We had the w2w gold shag, my mom put a floral orange and yellow wallpaper in the kitchen, there was Ethan Allen furniture etc. and those things were not cute. She still lives in the house and I would love to be able to do a complete makeover working with the elements of the 70s that would bring out the beauty of the house. I feel that with a deeper dive into the beautifully designed spaces of the 70s people would develop a better appreciation. Estelle of 70s House Manchester is awesome btw! Great video thank you!

Thanks so much for your comment, Lara - I agree that so many people think of the seventies as the epitome of "too much" in interior design. I love the individualism of the postmodern period, the risk and adventure people took in their designs. It's fun to see things outside the modern box.

I was born in 1960 and absolutely love the midcentury modern look from that time period. The 70's added the extra punch of colors which I still absolutely love but wouldn't go over the top. We remodeled our kitchen in the 70's and we had plaid vinyl wallpaper white/orange/avocado green. I would love to find that and also the orange pendant lights we had over our breakfast bar. \

My mama grew up in the 70s and says the same thing - she's much more coastal traditional in style and doesn't love the 70s vibe. I love a little pinch of 70s in an otherwise contemporary room. Wonderful video on this beautiful creative era...Yes, you can definitely blend the bolder "funky" look of that time with more sedate 70s styles...I loved this decade so much and it was such a wonderful time for design and fashion. Some things that some did not like is exactly what others loved. I love this video and your positive and appreciative views on 70s style.

Excellent video, I loved it. I don't understand why some people don't like the '70s styles, I don't see why everything must be so uniformed today why some would prefer the drab empty look of a storage almost over something that's both bright and vivid and feeling fresh at the same time. '70s fashion styles were all over the place it's anything goes, which appeals to me as I never followed fashions it kind of became a style to have no style back then just all these colors thrown together. I remember it got a bit more streamlined by '76, with the brown and orange everywhere. Takes me right back too (born in '66), I've never stopped loving the old designs in particular the early '70s appeal to me they appeared to be extra bold. I'd love nothing more than to win the lottery and buy a nice big house somewhere and have it decorated in '70s style. :) Alas, until then it'll likely remain a dream but the 'green rooms' at 2:00 and 9:30 anyway are awesome, give me a time machine I'd live there in a flash. lol

Oh my gosh, Lindsay, the last thing that those of us alive in the 1970s want is to return our home’s decor to the 1970s 😂 But with that said, I can see why Millenials, Gen X, etc. might find the 70’s style interesting.

My mama reacts the same way - having grown up in the 1970s - but I was always infatuated with it as her daughter. Probably because it was fun to watch the Mary Tyler Moore Show and fantasize about what life might have been like for my mama as a young adult. I still think of MTM for inspo with fashion and design. My guess is that many of us dislike the furniture style we grew up with. My mom grew up with heavy American Colonial furniture (which she hated) so she selected a 1970s decor for her home (which I disliked).

cars of the 60's-75 ish yes ( own 1 ) housing no it's a weird mix the more i look at 70's decor of Victorian and cottage core um no thanks id rather live and decor of real 1860's but keep my modern car and shop 😉

Born in 1971. When I turned 50 I found myself attracted to anything that reminded me of my childhood and loved ones passed on. Orange, yellow and green, brown have snuck into my decor.

Thank you for this video, Lindsay. I have been in love with the 70s aesthetic for a while. I have 1970s Mastercraft dining chairs and a few key vintage 70s decor pieces that have it through made it through two moves. Your videos are extremely helpful! I knew I loved the 70s, but my color palette has always been more on the gray/cream spectrum with gold & acrylic accents so I thought my style was transitional. After watching this, it seems like I have a 70s-glam-meets-boho vibe. Going to start incorporating so plants for more color 😊

If you love a vintage style consider finding a local business to reupholster it for you. It can take time and money but makes for a truly unique piece for your home.

I have 3 kids and a lot of pets. My Rooms to Go microfiber sofa was trash before I finished paying for it. The gorgeous gold and green floral davenport i bought that's from the 70s was less than $30 looks like new and doesn't show any signs of use. It doesn't mean that new is better, quality nowadays is very poor, back then things were made to last.
