Thanks...for the post. The CLR was needed after two years of use. I saw the white vinegar was not getting it done. This is two years of bottled water I was using.
CLR has instructions on how to use in a coffee pot. Use it or not. Just because SOME people may not like an idea, doesn’t mean it isn’t any good or that it doesn’t work. This worked GREAT in MY coffee maker (I use well water). I have tried other cleaners because VINEGAR did NOT work for me. This is by far the best cleaner I have tried. Run fresh water through machine 2-3 times (I always do 3). Good as new. Thank you for your video. God bless.
Thank you for making the video. I really appreciate it. As for the people complaining its too long, after the regular coffee maker section, you don't have to watch the rest.
. For some of us, forgetting to clean it as indicated in the directions, you will find yourself using the CLR, which was a necessary tip! Much appreciated! ;-)
@@bigboat8329 thats why it is rinsed so many times. Thats why we rinse vegetables before eating. You know they use lye to peel canned tomatoes (yes steam is used on most) Also all kinds of chemicals are used in manufacturing items that come into contact with our food but all is clean in the end. The chemicals in clr are in nature but at low concentrates. Yes, never ingest it but unlike some other nasty items, it can be rinsed off.
Nice piece. I followed through with the CLR on my 10 cup BUNN ... I've had it for about 6 years and do it fairly regular with white vinegar. To find out how good that vinegar worked I tried your method. After it got done bubbling like a damn volcano for 25 minutes, I started rinsing ...... I shook it after the first rinse and it sounded like shaking a bag of change. ALL CALCIUM. I ended up full rinsing about 10 times. Well worth doing, but now I have a couple little leaks. LOL
do what you want just don't be a dumb ass and forget to rinse it out. Notice all the people making comments are using fictitious names and have no content on their page. They criticize but don't dare add content to the youtube community. They are afraid of criticism.
At one time CLR had mostly phosphoric acid, which was fantastic. But they changed their formula and went to lactic acid, which is still pretty good. But I found that a lot of home brewing supply stores carry phosphoric acid under different brand names, and it's food safe. You can find just the generic acid or some actual brands like Star San. It's more stable at high heat as well. StarSan is one that's concentrated and would cost a bit more but last forever. *edit (word entry)
CLR has been very good to use. When I first cleaned the coffee maker in the video, the lady at the yard sale said it was only used a few times, but that turned out to be false because I had enough deposits come out of the coffee maker to build a sand box. -MrFixit
FYI that little guy isn't a percolator, it's a drip. Percolators send the hot water through the grounds over and over, hence diabolical-tasting coffee (and which is why people mostly stopped using them 30+ years ago) .
I have this exact model. When i make coffee it goes so fast into the basket area that it over flows and makes a huge mess. Any ideas on what would cause that??? I ended up using a chip clip on the top lid to help control the speed of the water.
it says right on the CLR bottle, NOT to use with makers that have a water reservoir like the one you have. Read the label!!! Also, if you call Bunn, they do NOT recommend CLR. They recommend vinegar.
Not even in my washing machine. VINEGAR IT IS. SAFER ON THE INTERNAL PARTS,PERIOD. Just might have to repeat process a couple of times, then immediately straight water before use. But thanks for sharing that bubbly note. Just add baking soda. Not chemicals. Leaves residue you will drink in that coffee. Just my opinion.
do you understand what a chemical is? For example, Oxygen is a chemical element. you pull it into your lungs to live along with chemicals, Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide and water as well as traces of Carbon Monoxide, Argon and even Methane, yes flamable methane. Ever smell a fart. not to be smart but theres your methane. So don't get on a chemical kick. Just be smart and understand what you have. Now the old degreaser trichlorotrifluoroethane was stopped because it may have been hurting the environment. Its still floating around and we may be breathing it. You can have ammonia, neon, helium, carbon, yes even nuclear products. Not much but it can be like winning a lottery.
Here's one really good reason NOT to do this: IT WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY! I got this information directly from a Bunn professional. My new coffee maker arrives in three days. :-(
how long do you think a warranty is? Do vinegar every 8-12 weeks during the warranty period but people always forget then you need a real drastic measure. Just be sure it is rinsed out. Bunn would probably advise this if they thought people weren't stupid. You can do the vinegar method but if you forget about the vinegar and make a cup of vinegar coffee and mistakenly drink it you will then be fine, you can drink vinegar all day with no problem, you can't drink CLR.
I buy a $20 mr coffee maker every few years or whenever i break it with water. I put tape over the front buttons n stuff where the water breaks em. The first one lasted till i got it wet lol. THe second one has lasted me like 3 or 4 years. I cleaned it once, yesterday. I could just toss it once a year or something. Anyways its cheap and just use that tape and itl be a good coffee maker.
Our 2008 unit just died. Quite the different system attaching the top to the tank on yours. On ours it was a small 1" long, maybe 1'4" wide plastic tube with a rubber/silicone gasket between the tank and top. The tank also had a tube that pushed the water to the bottom of the tank so you could not drain it out the top, it all had to go through the spigot. Eventually the gasket started to leak and water went into the electronics area and killed it. It will be interesting to see how the new model is set up once I have to clean it.
i thought CLR was a poisoness chemical that shouldn't be consumed. Don't get me wrong I know you are using water to rinse etc ... however over time would this not poison you?
The CLR company has dilution instructions for use to delime a coffee maker. And, you need to rinse it well. You can use vinegar, but not sure if that really deep cleans.
That is a good point, and I also thought of this. I am at this very moment running clean water after the CLR use. I am more worried about the dirty water (3rd cleaner pot now) constantly being brewed. My coffee maker is right at two years of age, once it is clean I am probably going to repeat this process once every 18 months. Hopefully that will allow me to remain poison free.
3:35 is for everyone who came here trying to figure out how to pop that danged top off...and ultimately realizing that the *inset* comes out, not that dumb rim around the top. Bad design, Bunn!
Super great job. So any I dumped fresh unused coffee grounds on the burner of my Bunn. There’s a gap around the burner and a lot fell down inside. And idea how to remove these without tearing the unit apart. I am an electrical engineer so I not completely ignorant but it’s hard to get a schematic on this unit to see if what’s what. I’ve always used vinegar with moderate effectiveness but this was nice to see how to fully clean this unit. Thank You! Any ideas you ah e on my issue is greatly appreciated. All the best to you and yours!
See those screws, I haven't a screwdriver head to git those types, what is the name of the screw head? seek 07:15 I need to take the bottom off the for coffeemaker. Anyone know what I need?
Remove the spray head and push the cleaning tool into the tube. Make sure you keep hold of 1 end and do not push it in all the way. You may encounter resistance at points, these are deposits and just push a bit harder to knock them loose. The tool can technically be pushed in far enough to lose it so it if stops before then it is a deposit. Push and pull a few times to clean it out then run some water through to push them all out.
Was going to clean my elderly Mother's coffee maker but you lost me at 1:31 due to fact she will never agree to CLR in her coffee maker. She would prefer a new machine to the CLR alternative.
When did you plug in or turn on the machine to heat the water. Just watching,it could appear that the chemical reaction is foaming on its own without the heating element turned on.
damn it why not pour the dirty water into a clear bowl so we get to see what it removes! thats why i watched the video haha. why not just use some acid its way cheaper dilute it 20-1 with water, clr is just weak acid. i use acid to clean hot water heater elements, takes the calcium right off with a toothbrush.
I did this to my Bunn... Now I have to buy a new one. DO NOT DO THIS!!! I've ran 20+ pots of water thru after doing it, coffee tastes horrible now. Google this, you will find several that say the coffee is horrible after doing this and had to buy a new one. You've been warned
You couldn't figure that out before you started the camera.? The cups the machine makes are 5 ozs. You used an 8 oz. cup so there goes your proportions, genius.
hes a lot better than I expected at the beginning. Making youtube videos takes time. He probably had to stop for some fried chicken lunch too so keeping his train of thought through the whole process was a challenge to. Overall, not a bad job. Only real advice I'd have is be sure everything is clean when shooting the video. there was a little schum around his sink that the camera makes 10 times worse than it probably is.
