I was already trying to figure out where to buy my next coffeemaker, and how to pay for it with my depleted budget when I saw your post. My last coffeemaker was a good one; a Cuisinart that I got only 6 months ago, so I couldn't understand why this was happening. Anyway, followed your great instructions and found a piece of paper towel that was clogged in the valve. It works great again; thank you so much Shane for taking the time to help out clueless "handymen" like myself. THIS is what sites like RU-vid are so fantastic at. My furnace stopped working a few months ago, but thanks to RU-vid (again), someone walked me through the necessary steps needed to get it working again, saving me costly repairs. Again, thanks for your help Shane!
I had our coffee maker fixed today and impressed my wife. Thank you for your video. This is by far the most useful YT video I have watched the last six months or so. Don't you happen by any chance to have a video solving the problem of an iphone not connecting to the wifi? ... hahaha, just kidding. But if you do, I really need it.
Super helpful even though I had a different model, able to take mine apart and do a full clean. My mom got this coffee maker in the 90s and it's been solid ever since. Didn't want to give up on it!
Excellent video! For my Cumbia brand coffee maker the build-up was not in one of the hoses but was instead in the hotplate. But your solution for inserting the screwdriver and removing the build-up worked like a charm! Thanks so much!
THANK YOU!!! I haven't had this machine 6 months! But got coffee grinds in the water tank and it clogged that valve! I was able to fix it because of your video. Thank you so much
Very good video! I wish I found it before I had to fix my Mister coffee and yeah, I put the valve back in backwards the first time! Mine was less than 1 year old and it had 2 basic differences: 1) 4 security torx screws on the base (and no removal of rubber feet necessary) and 2) clear silicone tubes for the water (easy to see the one way valve).
I had a great time following along & taking apart my coffee machine. Turns out nothing was clogged but the hard rubber rail that lifts heated water up to the drip spout is ruptured. Needs some kind of high-temp water resistant tape? I'm new to DIY stuff. Thank you anyways for a straight and to-the-point how-to video that doesn't waste any time. Cheers 👍
Helpful video, thanks for taking the time to post this. I own a Cuisinart coffee brewer that was having the exact same issues and sure enough, once I pulled the hose off and removed the check valve I saw it plugged up with coffee grounds/resin. I see now how no matter what manufacturer it is, Cuisinart, Mr. Coffee or whatever, they look pretty much the same inside. We were getting water leaking out the bottom, excessive steam causing condensation on the cabinets above the brewer, short potting (12 cups of water poured in but only 6 cups being dispensed) in addition to the popping noises as well. I rodded out all the hoses, the heater/pump assembly, disassembled then used a nylon brush and pick to clean the spray head and now it's working great. It brews the full 12 cups now, no leaks (knock wood), hardly steams at all and is only popping at the end of the brew cycle when there's no more water. The overall flow is great, I just need to buy some more filters for it now.
Thank you so much! Your instructions were/are very clear -- enabling me to fix my Cuisinart today! Wasn't looking forward to contributing to the land fill - and spending more $$$, THANKS!
Thank you for posting this! I almost gave up trying to fix my coffee machine. I put the valve backwards and the steam was going everywhere, but I thought it was just very clogged. Thank you again.
Great info. I was able to fix mine by power washing the water chamber out. Im sure some of the pressure went into intake hole and forced through whatever was blocking check valve.
You Seriously just saved us $129.00 Thank you thank you thank you. Although my 1 way valve didn't seem clogged or stuck when i blew through it so I thought maybe that wasnt the issue BUT when we put it back together and it worked as good as new. It is my Daughters Grind and Brew coffee maker. I am a 67 yr old woman she is 47. Together WE FIXED IT !!!!!!! YAY! I feel so accomplished haha
thanks my problem was a piece of food stuck in the small hole at the bottom to the fill tank. Thanks for the non frustrating sharing of knowledge that helped me fix my 4 cup coffee maker. Gotta have my coffee 😊
Thank you, piece of paper towel stuck in the valve, works like new. After cleaning with vinegar 4 separate times to no avail, I knew it had to be a physical obstruction. Didn’t need to buy a new one. Thank you!
I'm 62 and have never had a single cup of coffee in my life but I enjoy a challenge. I'm trying to fix a coffee maker. I bet you you're correct that it's dirty inside cuz it was sure dirty on the outside. I'll give your suggestion a try, thank you
Yeah I got this problem right after I bought a reusable filter & then pouring the "Gunky-Mudd coffee" back in the water refill reservoir. That lil ball & hoseline had 1 inch of gunk-mudd in it. I Poked it "LITELY" w a wire hanger while spraying upside down (I do not recommend being as lazy as me!) Now I got to clean up a gallon of water off my counter top & floor.... Should've just followed your instructions 😆👍
It works way better but later I got to take it apart & finish what I started to get it back to normal....... Also I don't recommend reheating coffee in the coffee pot rather "use the microwave to reheat"
Great tutorial, thank you, hope it works on my Cuisinart. Mine is a burr grinder and there is coffee DUST all over the place, inside the WATER tank and outside on my counter top n everything around it. Gonna make it a bonnet to keep it all contained hopefully. hmmm just thought of that.
THERE IS ANOTHER PROBLEM THAT WILL STOP THE BREW TOO SOON! I cleaned my valve and passages as you instructed and the symptom persisted. I postulated that the thermostat was partially faulty, and was turning off the brew cycle too early. I proved that by pulling the 'stat away from the tube so it would stay cool (closed) and I was able to run a full tank. CAUTION: you need to shut it off before the tank goes empty or it will overheat and could melt the safety fuses. Your video helped me eliminate one cause. Thanks.
😂 I followed this video and it wasn't coffee grounds, it was a lighting bug that managed to get stuck 🤢 So now my coffee maker works properly again so thanks
Great video... and by watching it, I was able to use a simple turkey-baster aimed down at the opening below the charcoal filter, and shoot some hot vinegar-water into the inlet tubing and free up the check valve after 3 - 4 squeezes... didnt need to take it apart at all (this time).... Thanks.
I threw away at least one or two prior to getting frustrated enough to open one and find the issue. The unit in this video was located in a vacation rental, and was used by many different random people. The issue is quite common, and could be solved by the manufacturer including a screen over the drain in the tank. I personally suspect the lack of a screen is intentional, as they sell a lot more units by not doing so.
Thanks I have a different model it's a Black & Decker 12-cup thermal after cleaning it the way it is supposed to be cleaned as per the instructions now it doesn't draw the coffee out of the tank at all but just gurgles so I was thinking about trying to what you've done
I glad I watch it but wasn’t my problem it was helpful maybe if I had this problem but I saw the thermal fuse in yours which I think this might be my problem why it’s not working at all…I had to order special split tip screw driver in order to take the bottom cover off. Just had to replace the thermal fuse in my crockpot express btw nobody I found in the US carry’s them and waited for weeks for delivery at least I got my crockpot working again, 1 down 1 to go. Thank you for the video tutorial!
Thank you! I don't drink coffee but my wife does and she only got about 4 pots out of this new maker (same as in video) before it started doing this. I'm not sure how it happened but it was full of coffee grounds. I cleaned it out and it's working fine. Why didn't they put a screen over the hole?
I wondered the same thing but assumed it’s intentional because they like selling coffee makers. Also likely why they make some of the screws use unique bits, so you are hopefully dissuaded from trying to fix it.
I was finally able to get this done after I ordered a tri-wing screwdriver from Amazon. On mine the ducts were clear so it was super easy to fond the ball valve. There were old coffee grounds on both sides of the valve so I used compressed air to clean out the metal C-shaped duct under the hotplate just to be sure. After cleaning out the ball valve and reinserting it, I noticed that it wasn't watertight in either direction, but it was airtight. Is that normal? Anyway it works now.
Good to hear you got it working! I don't remember testing if it was watertight, but if I open it up again in the future I'll do that. This particular coffee maker tends to get clogged on a fairly regular basis as it is in a high use area with a lot of random people filling it.
Hey Shane, great video. You mentioned that the non-Phillips screws are star bit T-16. Are those like the ones on my coffee maker? The screw head has three tiny slots that meet at the center, like a three pointed star.
Look for a “security bit set” and you’ll likely find what you need. You can probably find one at a local hardware store. The manufacturer does not want you to repair it, they’d much rather sell you a new one, and a security bit screw is a cheap way to cause more people to give up. They will claim they used them for “your safety”. Just unplug it and you’ll be fine. Additionally, a small screen over the water tank drain hole would solve the entire issue, and there is no way they don’t know this…
@@shanesgettinghandy I did get a security bit set, but I still couldn't reach those screws. The holes they're in are too narrow and no drill head will fit into it. I have another tool set mainly for working on computers, and with that I was ablr to reach the Phillips ones easily. But the star bits I got yesterday won't fit into screwdriver handle belonging to the computer tools. So I bought yet amother screwdriver set because the adapter looked narrower but it proved not to be. Fortunately all of these new tools together weren't expensive, and I'm sure they'll come in handy for other projects.
I found a Mr Coffeemaker JWX23 in the trash recently. It's just like yours but it has no silver trim on it like yours. Can you make a video on how to operate it? I'm not a java imbiber. Instead, I will give to Goodwill (if it works) as "saleable" or (if no worky and can't be fixed) as "scrap". Note: not all Goodwills accept scrap electronics, aka "e-waste." But our Goodwill accepts not only e-waste (small appliances only) but also scrap metal.
Thanks! This method worked for my Proftor Silex, and I was able to brew some water through. Next time though, the clog came right back and it won’t pump the water anymore. Oh well.
it wouldn't be hazardous, but the coffee maker relies upon the function of the one way valve to pump the water from the tank to the basket, and it will not operate properly without it.
Hi, Shane - Thanks so much for the helpful demonstration. It was great! I have a Viking Professional Coffee Maker. Could you help me solve my issue with it? The coffee brewer basket light will not stop blinking, which indicates that the basket is placed incorrectly. I have made several attempts to place the basket in the brewer slot. I don't think that this is the problem. I have tried using other filters: paper and several permanent filters. Nothing works. The coffee maker is relatively new -- it has only been used about two dozen times. Could you please help me figure out how to solve the problem? Much appreciated! Thanks!
Thank you for this informative video. I took my coffee maker apart, and rather than finding a clogged valve, the little ball fell out entirely. Is there any way to fix this beyond buying a new valve?
Hmmm, tough to say without seeing it myself, but one thing is certain, it won't operate properly without the ball. I haven't searched for replacement check valve, but it might not really be worth purchasing one, as the whole unit isn't usually worth all that much. Good luck!
I did this and still no water was being pumped out. I poured some vinegar in it and let it set overnight and turned it on and walla, the water is flowing. I ran some vinegar through it 4 more times. Works like a charm. I made sure the flow check was working too and the hoses were clear.
Sounds like you have the second most common problem, hard water mineral deposits forming inside the heating element. In this case, the best form of prevention would be using distilled water or reverse osmosis water in your coffee maker instead of tap water. Good to hear you got it working.
Mine didn't really come apart very well, I just used a lot of forceful water and shaking to get it all out. Some of the valve types are easy to take apart, mine was not. Good luck!
Yours may be a different style, but at the end of the day, there needs to be a one way check valve of some sort in that line, and you should only be able to blow through it one way. It’s also possible the inside of your heater is full of water deposits and clogged. If this is the case you can attempt to clean them out, but it may just be time for a new coffee maker.
Will brew about half a pot a day then the rest is still sitting in the filter unless you press the carafe up against the spout above. Then it will continue to decant. It started doing this a month ago. Any ideas?
I have a Mr. Coffee K-Cup brewer that won't pump the water all the way through. Because it's a K-Cup brewer none of the grounds are in the water section, so what is plugging it? I've tried the white vinegar thing and keeping it clean and it didn't help it any as it actually wouldn't pump all the vinegar through even after letting it set for awhile
