Fuuuuuuck. It is 4:38am and I swore to my wife I wouldnt go to bed too late, but i neeeeeed to destroy this absolute bitch of a 'miniboss'. Seriously, I am playing on the normal difficulty level, completed the 2018 game too, this shouldn't be THIS hard. The most annoying aspect for me is that the double-blue circle attack she does hits you no matter where you are, but the shield strike yoi need to do in order to stop it has a much smaller effective distance. That seems unfair. Also, Freya is fucking useless in this fight.
For me the thing that pushed me over the was when i finally beat her after like 27 tries the developers decide to take away the satisfaction of kratos chopping the bitches head of like whyyyyyy i spent all this time fighting and then we spare her
The worst is the game prioritizes her moves over yours. There is like a quarter second of time it shows to parry or dodge. And the throwing blade varies from 2-5. Also the blue circle happens from across the room but still hits you. If you're going to make something cheap don't make rules that you can follow.
Try it underleveled. She could kill me with just a few hits. I got stuck in that damn library for 2 hours. I didn't realize I could get stuck in there with this witch. I was just trying to explore for some loot for upgrades.
It’s actually so fucking stupid that the game does that. Literally as soon as you open the doors you have to use your shield strike but you’re not even close
Very poor game design, a game in this day and age shouldn't throw out something as ridiculously overpowered and actually trap you in the game. Killed the game stone dead for me.
Yeah I have one and got her down to like 3 hits but at low health she just hides on the others ideas of the room and spams parry attacks and unblockable. I resurrected and she does like 8 attacks in a row while hiding and kills me again. Fucking cheater!!
I was stuck for 2 hours fighting this evil wench today due to being underleved and with weapons that were like level 3 or 4 and thus got stranded in that damn library fighting her over and over. You are doing so much more damage than I was. She could kill me in like 3 hits. I am definitely a much better player after finally killing her in that circumstance, but it was a miserable experience and among the most punishing experiences I've had for exploring. You get stuck in these goddamn places and can't upgrade anything or escape. I can tell this game was definitely tuned on easier difficulties. It can feel incredibly cheap the way they just poise through your strongest attacks in like 6 frames when my attack takes a couple seconds to execute and I lose half my health in the exchange. I must have had 1 or 2 HP at the end of this. Stepping on a LEGO would have killed me my health was so low.
Lol man i know what you went through since i got stuck there also. I was underleveled and had to wait a long time to fucking beat it. But the frustrating thing was not killing her 😅 i was like seriously kratos after how many tries you aint gonna kill it.
Glad to know I'm not alone in struggling with this boss. I've been hit with the double sword attack the instant I walk in, then it's downhill from there 😫 🤣 I finally beat her.
I was really struggling against her until I equipped the Radiant Warden handles on the chains which deflect projectile attacks while your charging Flame Whiplash. No need to parry those pesky yellow circle attacks, just keep spinning and advancing until your in attack range. Changed the whole tone of the fight for me so that I felt like the aggressor.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that flipping hat come to RU-vid to find out how to defeat for maven, they made it so difficult, especially like the time to light block and parry etc. soo vexin and also the fact that I can’t even leave to come back to this boss battle later truly the most infuriating part of this game so far as I’m playing.

Use the Stone Wall Shield to easily block her attacks. Then keep hitting her azz with the Blades of Chaos (stay close to her) + use Shield Strike when necessary + keep blasting the whole time with Freya’s purple arrows. You’re welcome. Beat her this way in a couple minutes and not at max strength.
@Brian Grissman too late for you but I found that clicking in R3 at start of battle will lock the camera and prevent too much disappearing, roll away to avoid red attacks
One of the cheapest boss fights in recent memory. Love that she starts off with a blue ring attack right off the bat when there's no opportunity to interrupt it. Love that it strings multiple unblock able attacks together. There are hard boss fights and then there's Bad game design. I don't mind difficult bosses, but this is just crap. I wasn't even stuck for that long, but every single fight was miserable.
It doesn't string unblockable attacks together it does one where it throws the x and then when it rushes you you can block it then at the end up its rush attack thats unblockable. So yeah it is spaced apart by a blockable attack then when it throws its weapons at you you can use your shield dont even have to parry just block
This helped me alot i think i was watching too many videos of people doing no damage perfect parrying, so i thought thats what i needed to do. i was getting my ass handed to me. After watching this video and realising just blocking her attacks and dodging when neccesary I beat it on my my first go. Great work!
Thank you SO much for this video! I was having an unusually difficult time with this boss. I was thinking, "This boss isn't that tough. Why can't I beat this?" I had no idea that this boss heals if you miss the shield prompt. The game also didn't give me any super energy. When I watched this video, I was able to get past it after a few extra tries! I really, *really* hate side quest bosses like this that lock you from progressing until you beat them. It’s just plain mean. I did find that you can actually reflect her sword throws (the yellow indicator ones, not the red ones) with a triangle mash chain whiplash if you have the pommel that reflects projectiles equipped.
What sucked for me on this fight is that I had almost no rage, if it was full it wouldve been so much easier to beat her haha. I ended up having to upgrade both Kratos and Freyas skills and rage a decent amount to be able to beat her lol good thing i had a bunch of xp saved up. And I used the Valor rage to only be able to save one portion of rage to regain life cause they give you no green crystals on this. It was rewarding to finally beat her though.
I beat this boss tonight. It was hellish but after a solid hour I done it. My biggest tip is when the red circle comes dodge back. Dodge her sword throws up to 3 times then charge in for the blue and break that by double tapping L1. I used the star breaker shield and was level 5.
Someone else said it, the Radiant Warden handles make it wayyy easier. When she has those yellow distant attacks, charge up your chain and itll shoot them back at her.
This worked really well, thanks for the tip. The main problem with this fight is that once you're hit you're combo-ed to death by getting stunned locked, you can't do anything during that time. And for the yellow circle attacks, if you miss the parry timing you're dead. Such an unfair fight tbh.
The Maven had me struggling for a bit, but I was able to get through it when I learned the attacks. If you made it through Alva, you can make it through The Maven!
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but God of War games have always been difficult on the harder difficulty settings, and this franchise predates the Souls games.
I beat her onslaught style. Spam sigil arrows constantly and hit her with every runic. Parry as many attacks as you can but keep swinging. When health goes low, RAGE and spam arrows. Hopefully get one or two runics back for a second go.
Yep beat it yesterday after several attempts it’s actually really well made and I wasn’t mad how many times I have to redo cause I didn’t have a resurrection stone I love god of war so much the old games and the new ones 🔥
I did this by accident, I thought it was basic for the blades of chaos,but it's not so if you equipped, the raident warden handles, just mash triangle and it deflects most projectile attacks
Yea but it’s still a lot of fun and isn’t it an optional side mission? That’s why it’s harder than it should be. Gotta make sure ur collecting lots of stuff and hacksilver to boost ur stats as much as u can. Get the best runic abilities light and heavy
Definitely recommend using the blades against her. I feel like I was getting absolutely nowhere with the axe. It definitely helps to have some rage built up too.
I used all of the special attacks, shield blasts, prima ballerina shit and couldn't defeat her, but yeah the focus on blades got the job finally done ☺️
I reallllllllyyy don’t want to have to drop my difficulty but I didn’t expect to get trapped here in this quest and I don’t have the gear to give my health back
Absolutely best advice. Thought because my one shield had 50 defense compared to the shield walls 10 that’s weaker. But nope it blocked everything she threw. Died like 30 times, risked a controller, and then beat her first try with shield wall.
She killed me 5 times, but once I figure her moves out I was able to drain her healthbar pretty easily. However, the main reason I'm here was because I completely forgot how to stop her from healing! If I would've remembered to use the shield to stop her from healing I wouldn't have died 2 more extra times....
Best way to beat her is by using the stone wall shield and absorbing her yellows. This allows you to easily sidestep her reds and stay close for her blue attack.
This is the same problem I had with her and it wasn't explained in the game as to how to defeat her reviving. I hope you got her beaten because I'm on my way now to do so.
Man I was stuck here with no resurrection stone or spartan rage. She was tough but so far great fucken game that challenges you with many different foes
What helped me was putting Vanaheims Fortune, Honor & Virtue in the Amulet (there by increasing Kratos' melee damage against status afflicted enemies) hitting her up with bows from Atreus. Also putting on the Gauntlets of Radiance so any last minute evade I did slowed her down, which then in turn let me hit her up with more melee attacks. Whopped her ass within 3 trys lol
Took me two hours of trying different things to beat this b then I finally realized I had to use all my heavy runic and light runic attacks on first the axel and then the blades but first powered up the blades to be fully immolation before walking into the door and also the axe I made it to be permafrosted and used the talisman of meign, shattered star shield,shoulder straps of radiance,gauntlets of radiance,sold belt of courage, and for the amulet I used svartalfheims fortune, helheims essence, svartalheims safety and midgards endurance, kept blocking yellow attacks, dodging red attacks and double tapping l1 on my shield for blue attacks then slicing the b with the blades of caos anytime i got close finally defeated her
Same. I had weapons that were like level 3 or 4 and not really much of a build put together. I was already on the second highest difficulty level and her health bar was like orange or something. I knew much suffering would take place, and I had no way to get out of there other than kill her. I think it's the most I've suffered in a video game library.
I caved after trying for an hour, I should have tried equipping different items and managing my specials, but I just lowered the difficulty like a scrub. First time I had to do that in my playthough so far.
Just beat her. Seen i didnt have the same Shield. So i just went right up in her face the whole fight. Blocked her sword throws like close attacks and youd get a shield bash before they throw the 2nd or 3rd throw also being close also helps cancel the blue circle since you cant dodge it. Atreas special was useful to when you get her on 1-2 bars

As soon as I figured Maven out, I actually did it first time! Shield break on blue is easy... When he fires a bunch of combos, literally just hold block and dodge the red final hit. Then, parry really late with the sword attack, the trick is do it as soon as you're about to be hit.
Did anyone try to hit her once you beat her? I’m assuming you can’t anymore but I was curious if you could really finish her off. I walked out thinking she might strike me one more time before we left but then it actually lets you leave. And if you walk back in she’s gone
It traps you in this side quest if you cannot defeat this boss. There is no sacrificial twig like in elden ring to escape this place. Whoever designed this quest is stupid.
heres what i did: I used the star shatter shield because the shield bash is long distance and the high mobility. When she throws the staff, parry the second throw to stun her and dodge the first one (unless you have her at about half health where she throws a 3rd time). Use the blades of chaos the majority of the fight and cycle through your runic attacks between your axe and blades. Once getting her to her last bar of health (or half of her last bar), use the spear. I found the Glaive of Dodher artifact to be especially helpful due to the bifrost damage with my spears runic attacks. From there I just barraged her with my runics and Atreus’. Let me know if it works or if you have questions.
Objectively bad game design locking players into a bs fight like this. You could be under levelled and no way near prepared and it's basically game over for good.
That’s why u don’t explore side levels like this unless u collecting almost everything chests, hacksilver, upgrading as much as u can. I think I was early level 4 when I encountered her and beat her but it did take me a bit was frustrating at times but it is what it is I agree with u tho locking the player like that without an option to return when ur a higher level is kinda wack
Git Gud culture has made it impossible to say a game has flaws. This boss sucks and her double ring attacks happen way too early when you're too far away to counter the attack, the shield just takes too long to pull out anyway.
Ispent over an hour and a half on this fight, i best her by rolling out of the sword throws and using the jump flurry and the special attacks for chaos blades
3 goes? 6 tries? Jeez, It took me 2 hours to beat her on balanced. 25 tries? I would have loved to have finished in 6 goes. Come on. Her triple melee attack hit right through my shield, using the same one in the video. Maybe mine wasn't leveled up enough. You cannot get stuck on the wall or run into it, staying near the center helps. I used the blades exclusively. And you don't really get much reward, although I haven't talked to the two elves back at the base though. I did manage not to use a resurrection stone and didn't look anything up, was tempted too. Hardest boss for me so far.
I am on my 20th try right now and I just can’t manage to get over half the fight with her. I am dodging, parrying and blocking her attacks, then using all my runic attacks on her and after 50% of her life bar I miss 2 fucking dodges or blocks and die anyway 🥲
Dodge and stay away from her for the red circle attacks, use Stone shield for her yellow attacks (hold down button), double tap L1 for blue circle attacks, stick with Blades of Chaos, and if you manage hit square button to get a few arrow attacks in, its a tough fight and it only took me 15 tries on story mode, lol
This took my 15 attempts even on balanced lol Blades of chaos and using Hyperion grapple to close the distance between you and Maven helps Also stone wall shield
It that shield you using that help me alot, it making it easier for me when I change into shiled you use but damn even on Normal (Give me balance mode) is feel like it hardest difficult 💀
Has one ever had this fight break on you? During healing phase I'll Shield Strike while targeted and not targeted and I just get knocked back and Marven keeps healing.
Tough fight, took about 5 tries on give me no mercy. Switching to blades of chaos is definitely quicker than the axe. Another tip - be aggressive, I found it easier to dodge the yellow throwing attack and less chance to be hit getting up close and personal. Thanks for the video Josh, it helped 👌
