Trapping is applicable in MMA, however, I wouldn't try to trap every time. Trapping works mostly with people that are untrained/not prepared. In MMA, you're against someone whom is trained and they won't let the traps happen as well as traps can happen in self defense. Striking is striking, if you can find the opening, take it.
