I dehydrated some of my tomatoes to make powder and it turned out really well. I mixed it with salt, pepper and grated parmesan and it is amazing on fries!

M dried and pulverized tomatoes were a great seasoning/add in for soups and casseroles etc. I don’t know of a perfect method for pulverizing. My blender and food processor will do it, but they don’t like it.

yes I dehydrated too but made the mistake of putting the tomatoes in the oven after many hours in the dehydrator. put them in for too long....out came all the work I had done ...burnt. ((sigh)) what a waste but good lesson learned. Next batch will be different.

You know this is brilliant. I always have leftover tomato paste because often a recipe calls for one or two tablespoons. It freezes but it often gets lost. I'm doing this as soon as my trays get available. I might need another machine lol. Thanks so much .

I literally just ordered a dehydrator on amazon to use on all of my tomato skins from my garden that I remove to make sauces. I never once thought about it being able to do tomato paste! That is awesome!

I dehydrated quite a few pounds of fresh tomatoes over the summer, and lamented when it was over, because I didn't want to run out. It seems that I too didn't consider the possibility of deydrating paste. But I have now. 😁

Trick, cut the top and bottom of the can, push one end through to the other end no need to scrape the sides the lid does it. My son taught me that trick and I have no idea where he got it from. I go through probably 4 to 6 cases of tomato paste a year. I use it in a lot of different things.
@ThePurposefulPantry

I remember when you couldn't cut the bottom off! But you're right! Being that I only do this once a year, I completely forgot!

I LOVE tomato powder because I add it to soups, stews, chilis and spaghetti sauces just for the added tomato taste without the water content added. A bit of that powder in a soup add flavour without adding chunks of tomatoes. So good.

Hi I’ve just found you and have binged on your videos, thanks so much. You’ve opened up a whole new way of conserving my produce. I used to work in a kitchenware store and your tips regarding the fail/not fail were spot on whilst using the Vitamix “wet” jug. That jug is designed to drag product down to the blades and chop, if you have a “dry” jug the blades throw the product up and reduce the propensity for heat build up. I loved that your video went straight into a fix and no waste and all your recommendations for working with what you have at hand are outstanding and I am loving that. Nothing wasted.

I was given a 6 pound can of tomatoes so I dehydrated and turned into powder. I gave as a gift to a good friend of mine. She said she was at a specialty shop and there was a small jar of tomatoe powder for $10 !!! I was shocked! She loves the tomato powder I gave as a gift and appreciates it's value.

Thank you so much for this video. There have been so many times I have opened a can of tomato paste, needing only a couple of tablespoons, with no immediate need for the rest, and as a result, end up having to toss the rest. What a waste. I will drag out the dehydrator today and do this. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I have also taken a sheet of press n seal and put Tbsp. drops onto it spaced out. Then put another press n seal on top. Flattened them with the bottom of small canning jar. Press the area around each circle to seal in the circle and lay flat in the freezer. And when frozen I cut the circles out leaving an edge and stack them in a canning jar and put in the freezer. Then I just grab them out as I need them.

This is great. I bought a #10 can of tomato paste at Costco and rarely can get over there. Then I realized I would not be able to finish it before it would go bad even in the fridge. But now I see I can dehydrate and store it much longer -- YAY! The can I bought was 4.99 at Costco and was 111 oz. (And be sure to keep those big metal cans. The ones that have metal on top and bottom but are cardboard on the sides can be useful too, but in different ways -- and definitely NOT as rocket stoves.)

If you have a sealer, you can get a lid to seal the top and reclose it each time you take some out. I am widowed and alone and spoilage is an issue for me - so I bought smaller 4 oz jars and use the sealer for larger jars. My German Shepherd service dog loves many dried foods, squashes, sweet potatoes, and many others. So, I am not going to feed her a whole jar at once. So, I reseal them between use.

I loved this video and would really like to see more like it. I wish I had seen it last week after I had roasted a pan of tomatoes, onions, and garlic. Then used an immersion blender and dried the 'goop' in my dehydrator. I also did what another person commented on and dried the skins and tomato leftovers. I started the conditioning process and just today noticed that the contents of the separate jars was starting to clump. I fear it's been too long since I originally jarred them and feel that I need to toss them now. It's disheartening, but I've dehydrated lots of stuff from my garden this year and will continue to dehydrate. I also bought one of the books you recommended and I'm looking forward to learning more. Sorry this is so long. I truly appreciate your help in learning the safe way to do this. Thanks!
@ThePurposefulPantry
@ThePurposefulPantry 4 года назад
What is clumping - your dried product or the powder? If it's the dried product and it's been less than a week or so - throw it back into your machine! That's what the conditioning process is for - it gives you time to recover. We all do have projects that don't work well, though, and stuff happens. So don't beat yourself up about it! Glad you're continuing on! I hope the book helps a lot!

I dehydrated tomato paste ONCE. It took forever, because of the oils in the paste, and it went through several drying-, blending, drying cycles. It is probably one of those things on my "never again" list... besides, with what I ended up with, I have a good supply to tide me over to the apocalypse! ;-)
@ThePurposefulPantry
@ThePurposefulPantry 3 года назад
There are no oils in tomato paste in general, unless you had a brand that didn't. But the sugars (especially if there is high fructose corn syrup in it) can REALLY make drying and grinding problematic.

When I flash blanch tomatoes for stewed or canned tomatoes I save the skins and dehydrate them and grind them for tomato powder. Waste not want not

Some people make a face at me the crazy person, when I say waste not want not.

@@hoosierpioneer They will not be doing that soon - they will come with more questions. I bought a book called something like 'eat it all' and found that much of what we toss out is edible and very nutritious. -even radish tops. Have to admit that I would have to be starving to eat some of the things they mentioned 😞

This is great. I gave a recipe for Mexican rice that calls for powdered tomatoes. It’s kinda pricey at that store.

I also saw that you used the fruit leather tray for garlic. Does the flavor and smell of garlic and tomato stay in the trays? Should I buy 2 sets of trays, 1 for savory and 1 ser for sweet?
