@@GigHustle Not in states. In KFC, Burger King, McDonalds you have to fill a drink up yourself and they don't even offer you a carton cup holder, unless you ask for it It's terrible there.
That's what I do, also put a piece of tape or a sticker where the straw is inserted or the opening for sipping on the lid goes before you wrap the cups. The worst thing to happen is when the vendor puts the beverages in a bag with those thin paper cup holders and they had already stapled the bag - you can't do anything unless you tamper with the bag which is a no go.
I did my first two deliveries today, first one was perfect, a costcutter delivery and second one was McDonald's and the drinks spilt when I got to customer 😂🤦♂️

I think it probably spilt because your bag wasn't setup to avoid this? McDonald's pack their drinks pretty well now, back in the day it was a different story haha
When I get a hot drink in my order, I always hold it with my left hand and cycle with my right hand. I know it means it's not very safe but it seems the only way to keep the drink in one piece.
I’ve had no issues for a long long time now! If you setup your bag well then this usually solves the problem and most places are now packaging their drinks properly! I usually ask them how they pack their hot drinks and if I’m not happy with it then I reject the order
I e-bike under the car option. If it spills it spills. If it’s a little late then it’s a little late. DoorDash should give us an item count before accepting the order.
Cellotape! Why didn't I think of this when I transported a lot of hot teas, with the flimsy slit lids! I mean not even 10 yards into my trip from restaurant I felt a scalding hot liquid dwell against my back, seeping through the protective coverings of my backpack, confirmation of a spill. Non foaming liquids are the hardest to transport by bicycle. Any other drinks are easy and okay, but not small coffees, teas, that are in the slit lid cups.
Good tips, great vid. Along with the advice here, a lot of it is about balance, learning to shift your weight to counter the rocking/swaying movement of the bike (on turns, on bumpy roads, braking etc). Standing up on the pedals also reduces the vibration to your backpack, when you're going over bumps (the road surfaces in Liverpool are in really bad condition) - the bike is absorbing the bumps but your upper body isn't. I take all orders, hot and cold drinks and have only very rarely spilled them (touch wood 🙂)
I haven't had many issues since I think restaurants have now paid attention to this problem. Also great tip I do that too - whenever I see any pot holes or bad surfaces I just stand up and can feel the vibrations aren't in my upper body as you said!
I am at the point where I will just decline anything liquid. Most places have horrible drink packaging, but worse than drinks is soups. There are a lot of pho orders here and the streets are horrendous. There is just no way to make a liquid delivery here unless I literally walk it the whole way. It sucks that sometimes you don't know what is on the order until you arrive and have to cancel because I may have already spent 15-20minutes biking there but it is less of a time/money kill than having to bike back home and clean everything out.
I'm an Uber Driver. I had a rider who was bringing a large shopping bag's worth of food home (picked up from a Mexican Style food restaurant). The bag spilled in my car and created a mess. Suffice to say, I was not happy about the situation. I've had other people hold their own drinks and one of them dropped their drink and it spilled onto the rear of a front-seat and onto the floor. Again, more clean-up and "down time" to resolve the situation. The lack of compensation and the hurdles that Uber puts in the way of processing a claim (against people who made the mess) is another issue that adds to the problem. It is nice to observe the equipment and methods being used by other people who are making food deliveries in a professional manner. As some commenters have pointed out, a number of food vendors seal the customer's order to prevent tampering. I've since decided to enclose food & drinks in plastic bags to prevent leaks and reduce my clean-up headaches. Also, some people use Uber as their transportation to & from a grocery shopping trip. Fitting a grocery-cart's worth of loose bags in a car can be a challenge, especially when two or more people accompany the groceries.
I have delivered for some time. At times when i hit a bump the lids may come off or some drink will spill. I solved this problem by asking the restaurant to tape the top lid closed. 👌
Hot drinks spill because they are pressurised, like fizzy drinks. They're OK if they're not being shaken around, but that's not really possible on a bike. Once they get shaken a bit, the hot drink literally spurts out of the holes in the hot drinks lid. I had a lot of bother with them until I fished some cups and lids out of the bin at Mc Ds to experiment on why hot drinks spilled. I found 2 ways around it. 1 Take the hot drinks lid off the hot drink, put cling film over it and pop it 3-4 times with a pin. Not big holes, just pinpricks to let out some pressure. Then replace the hot drinks lid to keep it in place. I don't recommend that though because you're fiddling with people's drinks. 2 Get Mc Ds to put a fizzy drink lid on the hot drink cup, then put the hot drink lid on top. Some Mc Ds do this anyway for couriers but most don't. I never have problems with fizzy drinks. The lids work with pressurized drinks. I always check that lids are fitted properly when I load them into my bag. I always try to keep them upright too but I did have a hot chocolate fall over with the fizzy drink/hot drink lid combo and never spilled a drop. I also successfully delivered 7 coffees with 1 order when I figured it out. BUT!!!! That was months ago. The last time I asked for a fizzy/hot lid combo, I was told that Mc Ds have changed the size of their fizzy drinks cups and lids, so it might not work anymore. It might do, provided you can get a good seal when you put the hot drink lid on top. Since lockdown, I've rejected all hot drink deliveries from Mc Ds because ICBA. Starbucks and Pret seem to be OK at packing their hot drinks but I've still had a few spills from Starbucks, so I don't bother with them either.
Haha thanks for this detailed breakdown! I didn't realise it was because of the pressure when they are shaken! Like you I just don't bother with them because it's not worth the hassle haha. Getting the staff to add a cold drink lid would be a nightmare because they pack and seal the bags usually before I get there and asking them to do this would be a headache. I can get plenty of other orders so I don't worry about them now :)
I used to do this for hot drink orders from McDonalds but now I have the right bag setup it's fine. I still get worried when I'm riding my bike to the customer though...just takes a couple of big bumps and it can start to leak 😅
Yeah I agree although they should really be doing this themselves. It shouldn't be something that we need to check! I would say that McDonald's has been pretty good recently, the new lids they introduced are pretty decent 👍🏽
You can do this I’m sure! You have to click the little bars on the right hand side and it will show you the customers name. Then you can click the customers name and it will give you the option to message or ring them! I’m telling you this from my memory so it may not be completely accurate haha
I do all of this and it still spills, had an order refused and didn't get paid for the order by Just Eat. I don't like the hassle of asking for them to double lid, because they will always seem hesitant to do it (and it wastes time, what if they take 5 mins?). The issue with the tape is you're not allowed to open the bag. I decided if I go back to mcdonalds doing deliveries again, I'm cutting open the bag (I'm sure the customer would be more happy with that than spilled drinks) and using tape to secure the drinks. That way I don't have to speak to the staff (this was never a nice experience) and the drinks don't spill. Also drop bars don't help me as I have to bend over too much to reach the brakes. I need to install an extra lever on the top so I can stay upright more (and stem riser, already installed).
when you have a huge ass bolt food delivery bag and only 1 wall which you only put vertically my options are quite limited. Especially when you don't know if you gonna have orders like this because sometimes the whole order may take up all space something only little so if I will try to get additional items I may need to throw them out if I get a full bag delivery
Deliveroo small thermal bags fit perfectly! Unfortunately people are selling them at very inflated prices...I would find out the size and find something cheaper that is a similar size. Maybe Deliveroo is selling them directly!
I own a restaurant in outer London… I have to admit most Uber drivers and riders don’t have an IQ above 10. 90% will turn up without bags, most barely speak English and the attitude of them is despicable. The amount of refunds we have to contest because food is missing or bags are mixed up, it’s cold or it’s late etc. What they all don’t realise is if there is no restaurant there is no deliveries. I’m now looking for in-house drivers because It’s just easier to deal with.
I agree! This cafe is just a small place in my local town and they probably have never delivered before haha. So they probably don’t know any better! Don’t think they are doing deliveries anymore either!
I’m having trouble with McDonald’s hot drinks with a Just eat Bag. The drinks bags are sealed so you can’t get in them to support them correctly. All you can do is try and support them in the elastic straps which just doesn’t work. Does anybody have any advice on how to support McDonald’s hot drinks in the new style just eat bag? Cheers
Ive stopped anything with fountain drinks or coffee like McDonalds. Its sad that even whenI did Uber in my car the McDonalds drinks would still spill. If we had the opportunity to open the bag the best way I know to keep them from spilling is to put a layer of saranwrap between the cup and the lid. I do this to my own drinks when i run out on my bike to get them, never spilled a drop. The ONLY place I will deliver with drinks that dont come in a can or bottle is Burger King because they hand you the drinks on the tray, not a bag. Boom saran wrap under the lid and on my way. 1 other tip I was given (but havent tried yet) is a proper drink holder bag that lines up the cups in a row. Take a shammy cloth or dishes cloth and run it over the top, with a precut length of velcro run it end to end to keep the cloth over the lids. I doesnt stop spills entirely but what comes out is soaked up by the cloth and can just be washed.
Hi Sam! I do deliver pizza with this bag but not very often. I don’t get many pizza orders so I haven’t had that much experience. However standard pizza boxes seem to fit, I’d probably struggle if the pizza boxes were very large. I’m designing a bag right now that is very similar to this bag but with a pizza box pouch to easily put pizzas inside
